This morning I woke up at 6:49 AM, got on the train, read a newspaper, and broke my mind in excitement. It was a newspaper article about a commercial flying car, meaning a car that can fly and is actually produced to be used by people rather than test stuff or only for military/government/police/medical/firefighting use.

Though it's been in development for a while and news has been on it since 2007, this year it will actually be ready for launch and sale.

"If a Netherlands-based company called PAL-V Europe BV gets its way, flying cars may finally become a reality rather than the continued realm of dreamers.

The company's vehicle, called the PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle), is a three-wheeled machine that the company claims can be driven on public highways as well as through the air, with a range of some 340 miles. On the road, the PAL-V is said to offer a luxury-car smooth ride, while offering extreme maneuverability due to its motorcycle-esque tilting feature and three-wheeled platform. The manufacturer claims a 0-60 mph run in less than five seconds with an average fuel economy of approximately 70 miles per gallon on the ground.

To propel the PAL-V in the sky, a single rotor and propeller are used, similar to what would be found in a gyrocopter. The distance required for takeoff is 50 meters and landing space is even less, allowing the PAL-V to be operated in many environments. With a maximum airspeed of 120 mph and no traffic to contend with, commuting times with a PAL-V should be reduced considerably.

Powering the PAL-V is a Mazda-sourced, environmentally certified automotive engine capable of running on gasoline as well as bio-diesel or bio-ethanol. According to the company, Special Light Sport Aircraft certification, a Sports Aviation License, motorcycle license, and standard automobile driver's license are all required for operation of the vehicle in the U.S.

It all seems a little too good to be true at this stage, but we'd love to be able to check out a PAL-V in the flesh. Undoubtedly, personal air/land transport will be a viable prospect for the multitudes at some point down the line."

This actually looks like something that might just work, unlike most flying car concepts! Very nice find!

It sounds like quite a bit of trouble having to find airstrips for take-off and landing, finding locations and reserving slots, but this is something that should get easier relatively fast. Assuming that people are free to create their own private airstrips, it wouldn't be too difficult to purchase some land and convert it for this use.

Something that I had to look a bit around for: the capacity. It turns out that there's place for two people: one driver and one passenger in the backseat. I was afraid that this would've been a one-person thing only, severely limiting the possibilities.

If this does get released according to plans (2011), it's SO going to take forever before Transports Canada allows this to enter our market...

Heh, I get what you mean, Doc. It won't really be suitable to go camping with. :P

But in ten years time, these things should get cheap enough to work with well enough for the people, just like how computers have gotten cheaper and more accessible and user-friendly in a decade's time.

Definitely.

It suddenly becomes tempting to get a pilot's license. As far as I know, the process isn't too difficult or costly, and it gives you the opportunity to control a completely different type of vehicles such as this PAL-V. I guess this would also require me to get a motorcycle license, whose yearly rate got quite a bit more expensive in recent times.

Even if this company never releases their product to the market, if the technology is really there, it shouldn't take too long before competitors step up with their own offerings. Between this and Virgin Galactic making (short) space trips a possibility, it looks like we could have a lot of fun in a decade or two!

I doubt a normal drivers licence will cover piloting this... :(

Unfortunately not. If you check on the company's website, on the road, the PAL-V is considered as a motorcycle by most regulating bodies. As such, you'll need a motorcycle license (which I currently lack). Taking off the ground turns this in a flying vehicle, requiring a pilot's license. This means that your standard car driving rights won't allow you to either drive or fly this!

It flies!

They've successfully begun their first flight tests, and it looks promising! You can get a video of that on the official site.

Pretty nice. I'm not going to jump to get a motorcycle/aviation license just yet, though. I do hope this trend succeeds.
