Character customization and level editor confirmed.

Now THIS looks promising. You can not only play as different variations of Mega Man, and as other Capcom characters, but you can swap parts from various characters and form your own combination. In other words, build your own original character from head to toe.

Top this off with what will most likely be an online/sharing play experience with potential multiplayer, and we're looking at one nifty Mega Man game.

Ironic, considering that the upcoming Lego MMORPG is also called "Universe"!

Now, can we get a graphics set different than the one from Mega Man 2? :)

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. I'm kinda disappointed with the look. :(

More vids from TGS.

I'm loving the remixed tracks. Hope those are the same tracks used in the game.

I really hope that in addition to all of this online connectivity and sharing, there's a main game with levels made by Capcom.

At least we know it's a fan-service game NOW, and not down the line. Mega Man 10 was the love letter to the middle of the NES series, so I'm sure that an homage to 5 and 6 can't be far off.

I'm actually pretty optimistic about this. You're not supposed to take it seriously, it's just a fun little user-generated content title. It obviously has no place in TOS timeline, so I could actually care less what they include. It's a Capcom toybox, for lack of a better description.

I smiled when I saw the characters in the trailer. Notice that we not only get Rockman, but we also get a distinctly different "Mega Man," which appears to influenced by, but slightly more accurate than, the Ruby Spears character. Notice how Rockman is pudgy and child-like, while Mega Man has hard edges and a look more befitting American comics.

And of course, there's Bad Box Art Mega Man. I don't know about you guys, but I hope they run the gamut of bad box art, not just that one. Just open up the Complete Works book and you get nearly full-page prints of these "works of art." They're worth recognizing as part of the series' history, and Capcom is acknowledging it. I personally would like to crossbreed EU MM2 MM and MM10 MM. I also wouldn't complain if they include Captain N MM, considering the tone of the game.

For those of you wondering how this game's been holding up after so long without any sort of news, Sven of Capcom made a post regarding MMU's current status:

http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/26715257/Mega_Man_Universe;_still_on-track_for_2011& ;post_num=14#484434641

Nothing special, but at least it gives us an idea that this game is still alive.

What!? Seriously?

I'll have to go with TJ on this one, then. Outside of the Rockman Complete Works rereleases on the PSN, and possibly Mega Man Legends 3, we're out of options. Here's hoping that E3 will come up with some sort of alternative, although I've got to say that my hopes aren't very high. :(

I know I'm not alone here when I say I was actually looking forward to this game. Even more so than MML3. I thought this game had an amazing, innovative concept. Sure, it was a remake of Mega Man 2 with Powered Up's level editor themed on (but possibly not limited to) Mega Man 2 levels which would most likely have been an improved version of PU's level editor.

But what other Classic Mega Man game was going to let you build your own robot masters, or make your own ideal vision of Mega Man? Bad Box Art Mega Man, the re-designed Mega Man, and Rockman were only the beginning.

Imagine how many more interations of Classic Mega Man could have been added to this game? I think everyone, both new gamers and old, could have found a Mega Man they liked in this game, had it continued development.

This shit again? Has rallying for the past decade not been enough for Capcom?

It's really hard to keep maintained faith in a company when their head is continually up their ass and they fail time and time again to understand the community.

There must be a good reason for that disappointment, wouldn't you say?

I wasn't super on board with it, but I'm still sad to see it go. I like the Megaman brand to be as active as it can be.

As a side note, did anyone else hear this? Pretty interesting stuff:

^ Teej posted the same story, only from a different location.

I was actually trying to imply with my last post that if people didn't care about Mega Man here, we wouldn't be so disappointed with Mega Man Universe's cancellation.

Of course, there's lots of people who don't care about the game, but I think there's enough people here who would buy it to warrant a release.

Hey, I care about Mega Man, but MMU was a really weak idea for a game. They basically admitted it's repackaged MM2 with a level editor.

I didn't reply earlier due to the timing of this news. :)

This is so stupid. I'll quote what I said in the first page of this very topic: *insert rant ending by "I QUIT!" here*

Just look back at 2002-2005 if they need proof that people outside Japan love Mega Man. Merchandising was everywhere, Mega Man NT Warrior was on TV, mangas were in stores, games sold well on all platforms... If you want a franchise to do well, you need to push it too. It often feels like Capcom releases their game oversees as an afterthought, with no effort. For example, the Rockman Complete Works have begun to be released on the PSN. If only they had bothered to translate what little text is in those games, along with promoting said releases, they could have gathered some attention! Instead, it feels like it'll mostly go under most people's radar.

I've made a Suggestion entitled Reinstate Mega Man Universe in Capcom's Suggestion Box.

Whether it's hopeless or not, I'm going to show my support. Still, you should at least give the suggestion a read.

Reinstate Mega Man Universe

As we all know, Mega Man Universe, which was going to be a downloadable title released for the PSN and XBox Live, was cancelled for unknown reasons. Many are saddened by this loss, others are glad. Either way, it’s another missed opportunity, and the closest thing to a modernized Mega Man game that may have introduced a new generation of gamers into the series. It had many features for one Mega Man game. Not just a modernized build of Mega Man 2 using 2.5D graphics, Mega Man Universe was to have Character Customization, a first ever feature in any Mega Man game which would allow players to build their very own Robot Masters, or their very own vision of Mega Man using various parts and pieces from other various robot characters from the series. Players could even use other characters from other Capcom games, such as Ryu from Street Fighter, or Arthur from Ghosts and Goblins in their character customization. In addition to being able to change the look of your character, you could also customize the abilities of your characters, and change how you play Mega Man to your own liking. This game would also contain a Level Editor, which would allow players to customize their very own stages, and online sharing, which would allow players to publish their levels, as well as download others' through an online sharing network. Many complaints regarding the games' art direction and controls could have been easily refined and fixed. The people that were turned off by the art, probably never even considered that the one Mega Man they were probably addressing (the redesign specific to this game) was only one of many, and more incarnations of Mega Man could have been planned, and were yet to be revealed. Also a lot of the sprite and 3d mixtures may have just been from an early build of the game, and could have been changed while in development. If the cancellation was due to the criticism from others, that shouldn’t have stopped Capcom from making the game. Every game gets criticized for something. Mega Man Universe’s development was centered and was to be built using the feedback from others. Whether people praised or criticized the game, Capcom should have been willing to comply to the fans’ feedback like the game was initially developed around, and make changes accordingly, not give up and become doubtful. That is not how a franchise or new game flourishes. Capcom thinks that Mega Man isn't popular here in North America. I truly believe that this isn’t the case at all. I think that this only proves how out of touch Capcom of Japan is with the western market, and how they don’t have the semantics to make claims on us as they have. And I believe their own doubt with the series is a consequence of their own negligence, lack of direction, progression, and innovation, and not by the lack of the support of the fans. You can prove Capcom wrong by showing your support. I know it might seem like a pain to have to motivate a company that should already be well motivated, but times are changing, and I fear Capcom’s negligence will only longer leave the great Mega Man franchise in the dust. While Mega Man Universe might not be your ideal vision of a Mega Man game, no one can deny that this game is currently the closest game in the Classic series to evidently make any new strides and appeal to the new generation with it’s 3D graphics, improved sound, and many features, while appealing to the older generation with it’s simple side-scrolling gameplay. If there is any current game in the Mega Man franchise that was going to push the envelope and sales for the Mega Man franchise, Mega Man Universe is it. This game deserves to be given a chance, much like how the franchise itself deserves. Thank you for listening. For Mega Man!
