Who was caught in the net?
For the last 24 hours, several of you most likely noticed that the website was no longer available and might have never returned. Don't be so afraid, though: it was all just a joke! After last year's specific attacks (board, MMPC Website and oekaki), I decided to take the *complete* site down for the prank.
However, there's a little yet important detail that you probably missed: there wasn't a single error page. There were FOUR of them! Assuming that you kept the same IP address through the day, you'd only get to see one of the error pages. However, someone as close as your neighbor might have gotten a very different page. The goal was to confuse some specific people: those talking about the event through the day, as they might all have seen different pages. I can only imagine some of the arguing that took place...
Here are the four pages that showed up:
- Domain expired: A fully fonctionnal copy of a domain expired page, this pointed the users to several other destinations. It even included a check to see if the "interordi.com" domain name is up for sale. (Don't ask: it isn't)
- Account closed: Dr. Cossack shut down the place and asked his web host to delete everything, apparently... What a shame.
- RIAA takedown notice: Hoping to scare some people with this, the page implied that the RIAA had somehow sent a takedown notice to kill the website for illegaly hosting MP3 music files. Part of this message was taken from an actual RIAA takedown notice.
- Bandwidth Limit exceeded: A direct throwback to some of the problems that this site used to have, this page simply informed the visitor that the website had ran out of bandwidth for the month (on the 1st!?). This is the only one of the lot that might get someone to hope that the site wasn't gone for good.
And now, what time is it? It's time for the stats!
Some of the numbers will be available in a day or two only: I have to rely on the server data instead of the various counters, and that data isn't updated in real time. I'll update the following chart as soon as I can and post a notice about it.
- 4 pages united their efforts to fool people!
- No person was confused enough to e-mail me! *
- 14 sites that I didn't know about are linking directly to some files (most likely for avatars)
- At least 1 chat user, who hoped to remain online through the day to see the mayhem, was kicked off at midnight!
- By keeping the chatroom open all day even though it was broken, UE generated 15088 error hits (that's one error every 6 seconds)!
Any comments? Which error did you see?
