I have, at one point, owned at least one of every Megaman series. Save for the Zero series. But I looked at it with a taste of distaste. It just seemed weird to me. I didn't like that much, not because of gameplay, but of story. Ciel seemed to be Navi than Alia, X is a bad guy, and Zero, a guy who takes more blows than Elliot Stabler, is the main hero.
But now, I'm bored and got interested.
Is the collection worth buying?

The plot actually goes much deeper than that. Since the same core team worked on all four games, you end up with a consistent story that goes from beginning to end without creating tons of plot holes. The gameplay is a lot of fun too, perhaps outside of some parts in Zero 1 that don't work as well as they should. If you like the X series, and can take a more challenging gameplay in the same style, you could like this.
In any case, if you want to play this series, get the Zero Collection DS version. You can't go wrong with that.
