IGN's staff has posted an article on their thoughts about what Capcom should and shouldn't do with the Mega Man franchise.

I must say that I agree with them all the way. The franchise has a style that must be built upon, even if an alternate graphics style is used for a new series. I also think that a reboot would be a terrible idea, and that they should focus on a new IP if they want to do something like that.

My favorite quote: "We don't care what Mega Man's original box art looked like. In fact, it's probably best forgotten." The inclusion of "Bad Box Art Mega Man" in Mega Man Universe was a terrible idea, and is the tipping point where I started thinking that the whole project was horribly misguided.

There's room for growth in this franchise. They just need to find the proper way to do it.

I think a modernized Mega Man remake could be great, if done right. It doesn't need a blatant "hardcore" revamp, however, I think Mega Man could be portrayed in a more cooler style than his traditional "cute" and "cuddly" style.

Think X series art style and atmosphere, but for the original series.

I'd also like to see the games shift into 3D. Say what you will about how great 2D is, which of course it is, but I think for Mega Man to be more relevant in today's gaming world, he needs to try more revolutionary bounds.

They should make at least one, new 3D game to at least break away from the monotony of using the same style over and over. Just once.

___EDIT___

I said reboot when I meant remake. The topic is still the same though.

I'm at the other side of the fence on this one. Bad Box Art Mega Man was a great silly touch. And I love story canon as much as the next guy (I guess) but the plots are "intricately woven" and "carefully and thoughtfully created"? Someone's wearing their nostalgia glasses (trust me, it takes one to know one). Mega Man X7 was not created just to fix the plot holes of Mega Man X6, and Inafune by his own admission had next to nothing to do with that title.

I don't want a reboot, I think there's plenty more they can do with what's laid out. I don't expect that they ever seriously considered making Mega Man into a T or M rated post-apocalyptic FPS. They've so frequently emphasized Mega Man as a franchise that's safe and made for kids. Even with Inafune gone, I don't expect that will change.

The ultimately important thing: it's not his image that needs to be changed. It's his gameplay. Copy most of Metroid: Other M's gameplay, but use the Nunchuk to aim, fire, and jump. It is literally that simple.

I'm in for the 3D game, even if it's only a symbol of us getting a high-budget title. We haven't had one of these since ZX Advent and it's incredible amount of voice acting and nice animated cutscenes. Unfortunately, that one wasn't received too well...

3D games can work. I hated played Legends 1 with that clunky PS1 gamepad, and a different controller probably would have made a large difference. We can look at Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch for an example: it handles quite well, and it's in 3D! That gameplay design wouldn't work for a main line title, but a side thing à la Mega Man Universe would be welcome.

I'm also fine with the idea of an updated graphics style. Mega Man Powered Up was an attempt at doing that, like it or not. Something with an extra "edge" might look great.

Or, just let Capcom of America take over the Mega Man franchise. Cause I think it is Capcom of Japan, who is running out of ideas for Mega Man.

Heck, Capcom of Korea hasn't given up on Mega Man.

Inafune always talks an interesting talk. I was curious regarding his pattern of slapping his name and face on so many titles and in so many games. Apparently, it's a mix of taking pride in laying claim to his work, and because without his name on the project he thinks it will get overlooked. It seems a bit egotistical, but who knows, maybe it is in his best interest.

For whatever reason, I am bothered a little by the level of credit he's taking, as if none of the other members of his team offered any creative input or strong contributions into his games whatsoever. We tend to credit certain key figures on a team for their leadership and imaginative direction, but some of my favorite elements in games I would say are almost never the work of just one man. I just hope he'll give credit where credit is due, and not make everything "the Inafune show".

I think I'm starting to see why Capcom gave him the boot.

Yeah, same.

Not to mention Megaman is not even his creation. He just seems like an arrogant fuckface, especially with the name-stamping and the egocentric "INAFKING" we see in the credits.

Capcom's not awful. They're a company looking to make profit. They do a good job of that.

You could argue that Inafune is just passionate about the field and feels pressed down by the corporate structure Capcom has. I think we need more evidence on both sides.

That's only half true. Capcom does a good job of raking in profits, but they are still awful.

I can say that. I earned the right to say that. Every bullshit cheap-ass spite-move I put up with in every Monster Hunter game I've played so far qualifies me to speak on the subject of Capcom's very clear disdain for it's playerbase.

It's not like they'll make shitty games just to piss you off. Oh, no. They'll make great games, but then they'll add things in those games to tick you off, because they don't like you. They like your money, but they don't like you.
