Despite speaking about the chatroom some times in the past, few people bother to drop in anymore, even with a set schedule. Is there a reason why you don't come to talk with us?

Is the current chatroom format too old? Too uninteresting? Too focused? Too blue? Too laggy?

If you wanted to chat with other members of this site outside of the board, how would you like to do it? The current chatroom isn't really drawing in people, so maybe there's some fun alternative that I'm not aware about that grew in popularity over the years. Perhaps you know of one that you could share with us?

Also, considering that I'm expanding Interordi.com and the board to cover other topics, should I pull the chatroom from the Mega Man PC Website and make it a general purpose area on all topics?

If it worked with other browsers aside from Internet Exploder Im sure there was one way you could. http://metagate.va-sa-ra.co.jp/mgc/userlist.php?p=10

Go to that link using Inernet Explorer and keep in mind you need to install this plugin before you get ANYTHING to work. http://www.va-sa-ra.co.jp/mgx2/win/MGX2Setup.exe

After that you need to scroll down the page I sent you before until you see Briggs World. Open that. I hosted that a while back when it was new. Not even the Japanese themselves use it hardly. But its a nice little chat thing.

I'm usually busy or... actually, I'm usually in bed. Yeah, my life's not that exciting. But now that we talk about upgrades, something that doesn't freeze my browser every time I log in would be good. As usual, I'm not much help.

That's the one you used to run with a theme of ACDC Town and all that, correct?

It's a nice thing, and I'll give it to you that it's fun to walk around, but it's got two huge limitations:
- It requires Internet Explorer, as you pointed out, limiting access to Windows users.
- You need to install an extra plugin to make it work. While I'm not completely closed to that idea, many people would rather not (or can not) install extra software, and requiring that might limit the possible number of users... which doesn't sound great at the moment.

I'm amazed to see that the chatroom we were using ten years ago, the Bravenet one, is still in working order despite being abandonned for so long. That one worked easily as all you needed to do was enter a username and login. Problems, of course, were possible impersonation (no way to know who's who!) and a lack of integration (you can't know if there's anyone without joining yourself).

For a while, we were using an IRC channel. Dedicated software to connect to it worked the best, but there was also a Java applet to give access to everyone directly from their browser. The downside is that most "light" chat users (those who came by once in a while) often felt that they weren't welcome, and some of the IRC veterans didn't help in that regard...

That leaves us with the current web chat. It works, it's integrated with the board, and it's blue. The catch is that it's running a bit slow for some people, and others (hi Mr. 20!) tend to crash or freeze when logging in, which isn't exactly nice. Worse than that, no one's really using it anymore, so I think there must be something better out there that I could learn from and possibly use.

The question is: what?

In answer to the other questions at least, I believe it should probably be the Interordi chat, and that Minecraft and other users should always feel welcome. It's not like we only go there to discuss Mega Man! (I think?)

I like how the current chatroom is integrated with the messageboard, but... I never go in there because I never see anyone else using it.

Do people really even use chatrooms these days? I'm totally out of the loop with the internet these days. Back when I knew what I was doing we had chatrooms, message boards.. but now it's just a bunch of social networking and I don't get it.

I like the chat/board integration too... But since I can see who's in there before I enter, I only ever go in there when I see that someone else is in there first, and between that and just the asynchronous scheduling, I guess makes it difficult to get anything started...

This is getting deep. Have the collective masses given up on attempting to interact and getting to know one another through conversation and instead turned their attention inward with sending out bite-sized clips of tweets and wall posts for others to +/-? Any time I actually log into IRC, everyone's gone idle anyway. It seems to have become a background thing rather than the focus, when our senses have so many inputs vying for their attention.

I can't really speculate on what others want. I still like chatrooms now and again, especially when it's full of friends who behave like they actually want to be there.

Maybe chatrooms need a gimmick now... Like the chatrooom attached to a livestream of a game or a party or whatever. Legends Station occasionally does chats on iScribble, so it becomes more of an event to gather, watch and participate in the drawing. I've been to a few. I'm not saying we should go and try to copy one of those, but... Want to try copying one of those? :P

Incase anyone else out there is reading this topic, I'd like to add to this:

What do you use the internet for?

I mean, myself I just mostly use Wikipedia and Youtube, but knowing what Interordi members use the 'net for might help provide ideas for chatroom alternatives.

That's true, and I thought about that at first, but I don't think it really changes things at the end. If the display wasn't available, people would join, see no one, then leave; the window of opportunity to meet someone else at random would be very small.

I once thought of doing similar linked to the oekaki board, but considering that the community of artists around here is basically dead in the water, I'm not convinced it'd gain a lot of traction. No visual imagery was posted in the Fan Work forum in over a year save for YZ's stuff, the oekaki board is a zombie, and the last time I received FanArt, George W. Bush was president of the United States. I don't want to sound like a downer here, but it doesn't seem that we have a lot of people willing to contribute pretty drawings at the moment.

That does give me an idea, though... I found it found when we sat in the chatroom a few weeks ago to listen to those new Rockman music albums simultaneously. Something similar could be done where I would stream a set of official and fan remixes and allow people to listen and comment in the chat, or even request specific tracks. That could work, I think. :)

A lot of things. Everything on this site, for one. E-mails and video calls are musts at this point. Wikipedia and news sources are visited pretty much daily. Online documentation on programming projects tends to be more useful and faster to go through than the paper variety. I still connect to many IMs whenever I remind myself to do so, and I'll often be found online on Xfire and Steam. I do a bit of social networking, as on Tumblr, but I much prefer the format of message boards and the like (I'm not active on many, though). Oh, and gaming of course. Multiplayer gaming on Minecraft, Team Fortress 2, Age of Empires and others never gets old!

Mark my words: I'd rather shut down all user interaction on this website rather than being forced to integrate it unto Facebook. You might want to read my thoughts on the integration of social networks.

I spent part of the weekend preparing and installing a replacement for the current chatroom. Read on for the details!

The rest of the discussion is still open. Is there something else that you people would like to have to chat? And, as Necro says, how do you use the Internet these days?

He flashed out of existence. Also, I'm (usually) around if something is actually said on the chat since joins don't highlight the channel. Certain things outside of the intertrons were keeping me busy for the past month or so though, so yeah. It would be nice to see the former activity that was in #mmpc back though, minus the drama ;p

Just to clear things up:
Flashman is a server bot.
NotUE is my desktop
o_o is me
Sekhmet is Masterlink's (Reikart) VPS.

The rest are generally around, but not always paying attention; it's pretty common on IRC to leave your client open a large amount of time. My desktop tends to be on 24/7, likewise with ML's VPS (and FiX and Air for that matter leave their clients up all the time).
This kind of thing is something that's not easy to get used to when you're used to other forms of chat, but it worked more or less fine back in the #mmpc days when a few more people hung around.
There's also a nice little story of something interesting that happened on the channel, but that's for another time~

1. One thing that inhibits talk with the applet you were using is that it did not notify users of new messages. It also required page refresh to show new messages, and could therefore cause browser slowdown or crash.

True that IRC could be daunting for new users (or longtime-away users), but as long as an applet is available (presumably linked on board's home and on IO site) that shouldn't be a problem. And also that we seem to be no longer recruiting 10-year-olds (specifically).

2. I have mentioned this before, in a "Who's my next chat mod?" topic, but are you aware that UE (and Sage) were kicking & banning any user that came in talking about Mega Man, for being "too n00bish" (but non-SPAMmy) or "too boring"? True that many new regulars have joined the site since #mmpc was active & cool, but I think it needs to be stressed, especially to moderators, that new people in chat, including young ones, should be greeted with "Hey what's up?," as long as they're not breaking any rules, even if we don't want to talk about their subject. Of course if they can't type they should IMO be told to type properly and kicked if they don't. Whether I personally want those people there is irrelevant, Doc has never had a rule that you must be intelligent or interesting to join the chat. A boring typer might eventually turn useful (see AimMan, and, uh... another one but right now I can only remember Kei); also there's more people to be Not Idle / respond to things.

It could also be noted that in these days of extreme internet stupidity, people who look 10 might actually be 22... or worse yet 28 =\.

P.S.: Integrating other things into chat is bad, it will cause people to leave because the chat then requires way too much constant attention, unless it was like an occasional special event or something. Actually that might be a good idea, have like a trivia time or something, so people are encouraged to come to this "event," and then they join/stay early/late or make/remember friends and come back for normal. However to publicize such events it needs more then just a message board topic. Like a temporary added link or banner at the top of pages, or random mentions in a staff's post once per topic, etc.

OMG I smell eggs.

Ah, I remember the old Bravenet chatroom that ol' Porobot used to have. I remember dropping by every Sunday afternoon ( my currant time ) to talk to some other folks whose whereabouts I no longer know about; ie Cyber Kujacker, ZeroEx, EBlues, Bostich, etc, etc, etc. Ah, those were the days, ain' t it?

Well I'm really not big in chat these days as life goes on. But I surely did enjoy those times.

PS; and I would love to get into the chatroom anonymously every once in a while to fool Doc :P
