No way man. 8-bit street fighters? Looking pretty slick.

This looks like it'll be pretty dang fun to play.

Yes way!

We've been talking a bit about it alongside my news post, but a topic here is appropriate too. :)

I've been hearing it's got several major flaws. I'm downloading it right now and it's going immensely slowly. I'd say it's because Mega Man fans everywhere are downloading it, but I really doubt it.

It took about a half hour of trying on Capcom-Unity to get the download to START. I was just about to get it from some mediafire mirror when it finally went through. It took about 5 minutes once it did (33.4MB file). I haven't played it yet at all. Maybe tomorrow. Let us know what you think in the meantime.

Should I assume from the lack of response that *no one* tried it yet? The first original Mega Man release since March 2010, and no one comments?

I gave it a spin yesterday, as I had some free time. It does play like any of the original Mega Man games: you get 8 bosses, followed by fortress levels. You gain a new weapon from each boss. You can use the slide AND the MegaBuster. From the Street Fighter side, in classic Capcom fighting game design, each boss has a special attack bar that fills up as they take damage. Once it's full, they'll unleash a powerful move against you. Be ready!

It's quite fun overall, but there are some minor problems that I need to highlight:

  • No save / password system. This is the main problem that caused me to wait until I had a completely free afternoon to try it. I'm 2 hours in, I haven't beat the game yet, and it's still running as I type this. I'm hoping that the game or the PC don't crash until I'm done!
  • Special weapons don't affect bosses. You gain weapons, you can use them against any enemies, but no boss has a special weakness against any weapon. This means that I mostly play with the MegaBuster, and if you become stuck at a given boss (as I am), all you can do is try, try again.
  • Unintuitive interface. Finding out to properly configure the controls took me a few tries, but compared to some previous PC games from Capcom, you CAN configure them.
  • The levels are nicely done, but don't follow the Capcom school of design. Some feature way too many single screens, or areas where you exit by the left. The original series has a few of these, but nowhere as many.

Had this been any random fangame, my only gripe would be coming from the fact that the special weapons don't have any weakness-type effect on bosses. Since this is Capcom-sponsored and approved, however, I can't help but think that a few more tweaks would have done wonders.

With that said, I think this post sounds harser than I want it to be. It's a fun game. The crossover idea is original and actually works. The sprites definitely have that NES look, and the music is inspired by the Mega Man 2 and 3 style. Did I say it's fun?

Give it a try. It's free. What do you stand to lose? :)

Seems there was a special weapon system, but I only caught a few for myself. Looking it up now, gamefaqs says they do. There's also some cheat codes I kinda want to try out now. Anyway, weaknesses don't cause any special animations, but some weapons do more damage than others.

I totally died on Balrog at first, not realizing I couldn't let him catch up to me at all, but afterwards I thought it was pretty clever. I didn't fight the special boss, and I probably won't, even though all you need to do to get a perfect is to use an E-Can right before applying the finishing blow.

I will say that overall I had a nice time, and absolutely loved the music and some of the genre hybrid stuff. And the theming... I mean, Ryu throws fireballs, so most of his stage enemies are fireballs that throw fireballs? Xzibit would be proud. And Dhalsim's maze stage? I really got a kick out of that. The ending... was a little disappointing. The ending music was not, however.

Some little things threw me off. Like the boss doors? Just seemed way too short. And the large life and energy capsules refill a little less than they should. Jumping-falling just seemed to take a little longer than normal, throwing off my jump-shot timing a little (that might partially be my computer, I sure can't tell).

I also had a crazy time trying to figure out how to use my HORI Xbox controller to work with this. Not the buttons, I wanted to use the directional pad instead of the left analog pad to move, and I never did figure it out. In the end I played through with the keyboard. Reminded me of playing roms back in the day.

That's one tricky thing to setup in PC games nowadays: I don't want to play a 2D platformer with an analog joystick!

What I do in those situations is use Joy2Key. It's available for free and allows you to map any buttons on a controller to a keyboard button. That way, instead of using the game's built-in joystick controls, I use the keyboard controls, and I can map the d-pad to move around. I used a similar setup with Rosenkreuzstilette.

To do that, start Joy2Key and keep it running as long as you want to use your controller. Create a new profile for the game ( "Create" ) button, then at the right, hit the "Others" tab to access the options. Check the "Use POV switches" checkbox, then return to the "Joysticks" tab. Some extra options have appeared in the list named "POV1:UP" and so on. Those are your d-pad directions. For this game, you can map all 4 diretions to the WASD keys. You can then set all other buttons of your controller to act as you want. One last thing: once you start Street Fighter x Mega Man, press F1 to switch AWAY from the controller device to the keyboard one. You can then use your new settings to play!

That software isn't the easiest to use, but with a bit of practice, it can take care of all your control needs. :)

Sure enough, on my end, I lost the game to a display issue before I had time to finish it. That means I'll have to restart all the way over from the beginning...

Thanks doc. I'll give that a try the next time I play this game. Honestly it will probably make things much more enjoyable to be able to use the controller like I wanted. Maybe I'll go for the secret boss.... when I have a couple hours to kill.
