Here's something interesting: I've heard that everywhere, but I'll say it again. How does a red jewel constitute a SYMBOL?
The red jewel on Sigma's head is just that. A jewel. Maybe it has a purpose, maybe it doesn't. But it's not Sigma's SYMBOL any more than his eye make-up.
Plus, Sigma's jewel doesn't have a pupil, as reaverbot eyes always do.
Seriously, I really think people try to draw that connection way too fast.
EDIT: CORRECTIONS!
--------------------------------------
In fact, I do see what you're saying now. Indeed, from X5 onward Sigma's head crest around the eye was in the system shape (circle with two prongs over and one below), and the eyes do sometimes have pupils!
BUT!
Prior to X5 (especially in X4), we can see that Sigma's symbol had four prongs, or none at all. Besides that, looking at the official artwork for the latest, Maverick Hunter X, the pupil is not present in the jewel.
I would say the connections people like to draw are simply due to either Capcom simply unintentionally reusing elements, using them independent of eachother in fashions that are looked too far into by the fans, or simply Capcom trying to implement a very cheap fanservice later on. I DO NOT THINK this ties Reaverbots to Sigma.
