Phew that\'s a long time since i have posted a topic.
Well here is the news:

Interesting bit of news from \"The Globe\"...

\"Now we have a study suggesting the average IQ of the average youngster in the year 2002 is roughly 25 points higher than the intelligence quotient of their grandparents.

And the reason is video games.

A psychologist at Cornell University in New York has found that youth testing in westernized countries has seen the abstract reasoning and thinking portions of IQs rise by approximately seven points a decade, leaving today\'s children 15 points brighter than their parents who are, in turn, brighter than the grandparents.

Nutrition is part of it, of course, but researchers claim the real brain prod appears to come from the constant interaction of children with video games, the Internet and even television.\"

Official post from: Tom Fulp

Well i am one of those geeks that can raise their IQ because of video games but.. Do you believe it? There is a chance that this could be only for some exeptional people that do more with video games. Anyway it is a bit good for my sort of style since nerds will be commoners.

EDIT! I\'ve made this a news topic because if i have any news it\'s a bit of a waste to post a topic about it.
So everyone find any weird or special news and post it here!

Edit! from now on this will be a news topic!

right after updating this topic i found something very good for the pokemon haters.

Pokemon-Induced Seizures

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -- Italian scientists have figured out how an episode of the television cartoon Pokemon may have caused epileptic seizures in 685 Japanese children in 1997.

The problem was caused by an abnormal brain response in these children to flashing lights featured in the cartoon, signaling a brain disorder known as photosensitive epilepsy. Dr. Vittorio Porciatti of the Institute of Neurophysiology in Pisa and colleagues say that a mechanism in the brain that controls the reaction to visual information ``is defective or absent in\'\' people with photosensitive epilepsy.

It has been known for many years that strobe lights or flashing lights may cause seizures in people with this type of epilepsy, but it was unclear how the lights induced this response. In an attempt to understand that process, Porciatti and colleagues exposed eleven patients with photosensitive epilepsy to different patterns of flashing lights and studied the brainwaves of these patients in response to the lights.

Compared with people who did not have the disorder, photosensitive epileptics had abnormal brain activity in response to slow-flashing lights with high contrast. These are the type of lights ``common in TV images and in video games, and may be important in triggering the abnormal (brain) response underlying visually induced epileptic seizures,\'\' the researchers write in the March issue of Nature Neuroscience.

The researchers note that while the disorder is not very common, affecting between 0.5 - 0.8% of children between the ages of 4 - 14, they suspect that photosensitive epilepsy ``is increasing as a result of the proliferation of television display units and video games, which may act as triggers.\'\' SOURCE: Nature Neuroscience.

What a great topic idea!

Now, about Video Games:
Depending upon the source, videogames can either help or harm the persons playing. According to some research, some people may benefit from playing video games-- some studies have claimed that playing computerized games have contributed to better problem-solving skills and improvement in hand-eye coordination, among other things. There are other reports that say video games are harmful to us-- there have been claims that playing games can impair social skills, and can cause a player\'s sense of reality to be lost, epecially when playing \"violent\" video games.

I suppose it\'s up to the readers/viewers of these studies to believe in whichever version of these reports they want.

Thanks Kujacker and with that answer i can get my brain to thinking again.

As everyone now know that i\'m a geek.
I must say that i do much more with a game.
I can make reality in it but i can escape that reality also.

And about the harmfull of video games why it\'s harmfull is because not all people can escape the reality that i can make, so most people get stuck there and then they go insane.

I mostly think games like GTA3 are far too violent and easy (i\'ve beaten that game in 3 days), while Hitman 2:Silent assasian is far more bloody but then with a \"Gore off\" feature and needs far more of the brain then any normal shooter.
But mostly a game increases your reflexes, Solving skills and you can be more patient.
Also side-scrollers increases your reflexes dramaticly and that\'s why you have to play them more.

But now the side-effects
You can have personality problems, most people cannot understand you feelings, you can be rejected from your whole class and have misery your whole school time, you will loose your strenght (i\'m lucky that i\'ve got very strong legs so i can run really fast).

But is it really necesary that governments will delete all the \"violent\" games?
I say no...
Cartoons also make a real bad thing in your life.. But i let that topic for someone else to explain also because i hate all the western cartoons so i never watch them

Anyway everyone should already know that the infamous Bin Laden has been confirmed alive, for those that don\'t know here\'s the report:

Osama bin Laden is reported to be alive and full of praise for recent anti-Western attacks.

The Arabic language television station, al-Jazeera, announced that the al Qaeda leader hailed attacks on Bali, Kuwait and Yemen, and last month\'s hostage-crisis in Moscow.

The television channel also said bin Laden issued a warning to citizens of countries allied with the United States saying they would be the targets of new attacks if they continued to back the \"White House gang of butchers\".

Al-Jazeera claims to have a new audio tape of bin Laden and intelligence experts are currently checking whether the voice on the tape matches that of the terrorist leader.

Message

Sean McCormack, spokesman for the White House National Security Council in Washington, said: \"We\'ve seen these reports and we will analyse the recording. We don\'t know if it\'s him or not.\"

If authenticated, the tape would be the strongest evidence yet that bin Laden survived the military campaign in Afghanistan to flush out al Qaeda.

The speaker on the tape said his message was particularly aimed at Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Cananda and Australia.

\"We had warned Australia about its participation in Afghanistan. It ignored the warning until it woke up to the sound of explosions in Bali,\" he said.

He stopped short of claiming responsibility for the attacks in Bali which killed nearly 200 people.

We now have 3 topics:

Bin Laden (will problably be closed soon)
Cartoons
Video games

I hope i can read everyone\'s thinking about these.

Umm Dr. Chaos i don\'t really understand that answer....

Anyway here\'s some (bad) Dutch news..

Holland has become a country where criminal\'s can go to the police and after a minute they can go away....

Drugdealers can smuggle all kinds of drugs in Holland without going to jail.
The reason is: not enough room in the prisons or they have bribed the police..

And do you know what a punishment in Holland is? A year in jail with a T.V, good food, everyday there is some kind of activity for the prisoners... There are more of those things...

Also buying drugs is\'nt a problem i sometimes see drug users buying drugs just across the street some times in a province called Limburg.

And we now have Domino day!
We have beaten the records!

90% of 4000000 stones have fallen!

Here\'s some really freaky news.
I have to translate it because almost nobody can speak dutch.:

On the Scottish golfclub Tillicoultry at Stirling, where 2, 5 metre trees were standing and they were extremely in the way. Much golfers had throuble with the 9th hole.

One golfer was extremely pissed about it, and he took a axe to dispose of the trees.
The owner of the golfclub was really mad about it. Those trees were standing there for 10 years and there were no plans to dispose of them.

White House plans wide monitoring of Net

Monday, December 23, 2002 Posted: 9:41 AM EST (1441 GMT) CNN News

-----------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is proposing an Internet-wide monitoring center to detect and defend against major cyber-attacks, but the Bush administration sought to ease worries it might scrutinize individual users\' e-mails along with other data traffic.

Some Internet industry executives and lawyers said they would raise serious civil liberties concerns if the U.S. government, not an industry consortium, operated such a powerful monitoring center. Such a proposal would require congressional approval.

Under federal wiretap laws, privately operated centers can in some circumstances analyze e-mails and other data flowing across parts of the Internet without approvals from a judge.

Disputing concerns about eavesdropping

President George W. Bush\'s top cyberspace adviser, Richard Clarke, on Friday strongly disputed concerns about government broadly eavesdropping on citizen e-mails. Clarke wrote there was \"nothing ... which in any way suggests or proposes a government system that could extend to monitoring individuals\' e-mails.\"

Clarke sent the letter to Harris Miller, the head of a prominent trade group, the Washington-based Information Technology Association of America. He said the White House plan \"articulates a strong policy of protecting citizens\' privacy in cyberspace.\"

The industry\'s fears appeared to stem from a subtle change between an earlier proposal and one currently circulated within the administration as part of its forthcoming \"National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace,\" set for release early next year.

The latest draft, parts of which were obtained by The Associated Press, envisions a monitoring center to \"analyze and exchange data about attacks that could prevent exploits from escalating and causing damage or disruption of vital systems.\"

It said the center \"could be operated by the private sector but could share information with the federal government through the Department of Homeland Security.\"

\'Managed by a private board\'

The administration\'s earlier proposal, released in September as a draft for public comment, acknowledged explicitly that such a monitoring center \"would not be a government entity and would be managed by a private board.\"

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Friday that the administration still envisions that any such monitoring operation would be run by the private sector.

\"The latest proposal seems to make this more aggressive, put the government in charge of it,\" said Stewart Baker, a Washington lawyer who represents the U.S. Internet Service Provider Association.

\"It\'s not envisioned as an all-purpose intercept tool, but as soon as you put the capability in the government\'s hands to run a network operations center, you\'re putting in their hands the ability to get to who\'s talking to whom, what information is going from one company to another, one computer to another,\" Baker said.

Grappling with details

A spokesman for the new Department of Homeland Security, Brian Roehrkasse, said Friday there was no proposal that would call for monitoring e-mails and other data traffic of Internet users.

Roehrkasse said he could not describe specific proposals that have not been publicly announced, such as whether the monitoring center should be operated by industry or government.

\"These are the exact questions we\'re grappling with,\" he said.

Many experts have questioned the need for such a centralized monitoring center, even one operated by private industry. They note that private centers on the nation\'s largest networks already adequately share information about Internet attacks informally among themselves and with the government.
______________________________

It\'s a bit of a concern... If would be approved and is going to be used then what would happen with all our private E-mails? And since the local postman is always looking into the letters we will have no option of privacy....

But it has some good sides too....

Since i\'ve been getting far too much Guilty Gear hentai pictures i feel like sueing them... I know their location... But the cops won\'t arrive and i don\'t know why...
and it would be nice if some houses had a internet lock.
And if the RECEIVER could whistle the flute for those security guys, and not that the security guys had to look in the E-mail, and that the sender would have a nice big fine for vulgarish E-mails.

I hope to get some responses soon...

I think internet security should be increased but not that much because of privatisation but with the techknowlegdy today they should be able to check emails with someone else viewing them but by a computer checking them.

Microsoft sued for refusing source code

----------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 23, 2002 Posted: 9:21 AM EST (1421 GMT) CNN News

-------------------------------------

AMSTERDAM, Holland (Reuters) -- British mobile phone maker Sendo said on Monday it had filed suit in U.S. federal court against its former partner Microsoft in a dispute over intellectual property.

\"Sendo believes the allegations are serious and substantial,\" a Sendo spokeswoman told Reuters.

Microsoft executives in Europe declined to comment on Monday. But they said several weeks ago, when rumors emerged about a conflict between the two firms over misuse by Microsoft of proprietary information, that such allegations were without merit.

Sendo in November cancelled all cooperation with Microsoft when it was just weeks away from launching a mobile phone running on Microsoft software. Microsoft is a minority shareholder in Sendo.

Getting access to \'source code\'

At the time Sendo declined to give all the reasons for the split, saying only that it had not been given access to so-called \'source code\' which would allow it to tailor the software.

It made clear there were more important reasons behind the move, but declined to give details for legal reasons. Sendo has filed the suit in Texarkana, Texas.

Sendo went on to sign a contract with Microsoft rivals Symbian of Britain and Nokia of Finland, sacrificing a potential 300 million euro revenue stream from its Microsoft-based phone. It had already signed supply deals with many mobile telecoms carriers around the world.

Had Sendo continued to work with Microsoft, it would have established the British firm as the leading partner in Microsoft\'s attempt to crack the mobile phone business.

Rocky relationship ends

The relationship between privately-held Sendo and its minority shareholder Microsoft was always rocky, with both firms complaining about each other\'s attitude, sources close to the companies said.

Over the past year Microsoft executives told several people in the telecoms industry how they had to endure Sendo\'s skeptical take on Microsoft\'s mobile software, designed to repeat Microsoft\'s success in desktop computer software.

These Microsoft executives said they preferred to work with two other hardware partners in Asia which were much more appreciative of its product.

The Microsoft-Sendo dispute came to a head when the first Microsoft-based products were introduced.

Several sources said last month that Sendo management believed certain special features it had put in its phone over and above Microsoft\'s usual standard operating system had emerged in other smartphones Microsoft was involved in.

One rival phone, called the Orange SPV, was produced by Taiwan\'s High Tech Computer (HTC) for French-owned mobile telecoms operator Orange.

That phone, the world\'s first smartphone using a slimmed-down version of Microsoft Windows desktop PC software, was launched two weeks before Sendo decided to stop working with Microsoft.

The break-up came just days before Sendo would have started shipping its own smartphone z100, whose launch was cancelled as a result of the split. It had deals with several large mobile operators in Europe, Asia and the United States, and had said it would sign over a dozen contracts soon.

Ambitious plans fall apart

Although small, Sendo was Microsoft\'s most ambitious partner for its new smartphone software. It had orders and plans to sell over one million of its smartphone z100s in the first year.

At around 350 euros per phone, the Sendo z100 would have been some 15-20 percent more expensive than HTC\'s SPV phone, with few unique features to justify the difference.

Under the new deal with Symbian and Nokia, Sendo has been allowed to access Nokia\'s source code and tailor the software, but it could take another 12 months before it can launch a smart new phone.

Group claims first cloned human born

Clonaid founded by Raelians, who believe aliens created humans

--------------------------------------------
Friday, December 27, 2002 Posted: 12:36 PM EST (1736 GMT) CNN news

--------------------------------------------

HOLLYWOOD, Florida (CNN) -- A company founded by a religious group that believes humans were created by extraterrestrials said Friday that it has created the first human clone -- a 7-pound baby girl it calls Eve.

\"I am very pleased to announce that the first baby clone is born,\" said Brigitte Boisselier, the scientific director of Clonaid and a bishop in the group, called the Raelians. \"She was born yesterday at 11:55 a.m. in the country where she was born. She is fine.\"

Boisselier refused to disclose where Eve was born but did reveal that the mother is a 31-year-old American citizen. She said Eve was created using DNA from the mother\'s skin cells and is a twin of her mother.

In an exclusive interview with CNN after the announcement, Boisselier said advances in the field of human in-vitro fertilization and cow cloning added to her success.

\"We have experts with 24 years of experience in the reproduction of humans and benefited from that.... (and also from) the work that has been done on cow cloning, of course,\" Boisselier said. \"My expert, the one technician that did the embryo, did more than 3,000 cow embryos before touching any human eggs.\"

At the news conference, Boisselier said four other cloned babies are expected to be born by February.

Boisselier offered no immediate proof of her claim -- or photographs of the baby. She said the baby is healthy, and that the family is \"very happy.\"

She said that she is allowing a freelance journalist to verify her claim. To that end, freelance journalist and physicist Dr. Michael Guillen has picked a panel of independent experts to investigate.

\"I have accepted on two conditions: that the invitation be given with no strings attached whatsoever and that the tests be conducted by a group of independent world-class experts,\" Guillen said.

The experts will begin their tests in a few days when Eve returns home, Boisselier said. Results of the tests are expected in eight to nine days.

Clonaid, which calls itself the \"first human cloning company,\" was founded by the Raelians in 1997. The Raelian movement professes that life on Earth was created through genetic engineering by extraterrestrials.

The Raelians believe their spiritual leader -- former French journalist Claude Vorilhon who now calls himself Rael -- is a direct descendant of these aliens. He says he has met with aliens and visited their planet. Rael told CNN in July 2001 that the long-term goal for human cloning is to live forever.

Rael says the Raelians eventually want to learn how to clone an adult and then \"transfer the brain to the clone.\" Boisselier said she hopes to one day open cloning clinics on each continent to help infertile couples have families.

More clones on the way?

To make a clone, scientists first take an egg and remove all of its genetic material. Then the nucleus of a cell -- any cell in the body -- is taken from the individual to be cloned and inserted into the hollowed-out egg.

The cell is then given a jolt of electricity or put in a chemical bath to activate cell division -- essentially tricking the cell into doing what a fertilized egg would normally do. Then the embryo is implanted into a woman\'s uterus who carries the baby to term.

Boisselier said Clonaid used this procedure of electricity to activate cell division for Eve.

At the conference, Boisselier defended human cloning, saying she is giving hope to infertile parents.

\"Is my science, giving babies to parents who have been dying to get one with their own genes, is my science worse than the ones who are preparing bombs to kill people?\" Boisselier said. \"I am creating life.\"

Eve is one of ten implantations done by Clonaid. Five babies were spontaneously terminated during the first few weeks of pregnancy, Boisselier said. The next baby is expected to be born next week in northern Europe. Three other cloned human babies should be born by early February; Boisselier revealed that two of the expecting sets of parents are from Asia and another is from North America. She also said one couple is lesbian and two had babies who died and were then cloned by Clonaid.

\'Not a monster\'

Despite the success of the procedure, Boisselier said the event should be kept in perspective.

\"It\'s very important to remember we are talking about a baby,\" Boisselier said. \"She is not a monster or some result of something that is disgusting. She is a very healthy baby with very happy parents.\"

Rael and the parents of Eve were not at the press conference.

The Raelians are also not the only group claiming to actively try to clone a human.

Italian doctor Severino Antinori made several announcements in recent months, claiming that a woman was carrying a human clone, which would be born in January. And former University of Kentucky professor Panos Zavos has also announced plans to clone a human, but he told CNN earlier this year he had not successfully created an embryo yet.

While the Bush administration has not reacted specifically to the news, the president earlier this year made his position clear -- he objects to any form of cloning.

In an April 10 speech urging the Senate to support a bill banning human cloning in the United States, Bush called the practice \"deeply troubling\" and said \"even the most noble ends do not justify any means.\"

\"Life is a creation, not a commodity,\" he had said. \"Our children are gifts to be loved and protected, not products to be designed and manufactured.\"

---------------------------------

Now this getting really freaky.... Human clones.....

A question to you:

Are you against human cloning?

------------------------------------------

I\'ll be keeping a close eye to this.... This is getting interesting..

For gok gok:

I don\'t understand what you\'re saying...
The clones can be good, but they must be different then humanity. Or they\'ll be evil like we are sometimes... But if we can treat them with much love and caring they can be real peace bringers and it may be a violation of GOD but he is\'nt here anymore, so we have to take care of ourselves.

Saw that last night in the news. It just CAN\'T be true. It took the scientists hundred of tries before being able to do something with Dolly. Humans are even more complicated, so I doubt they\'ve got such positive results so fast.

That\'s such a big moral issue... I, personally, am against any and all forms of cloning. We\'re talking about human life here, not objects! Some people have to learn that they are NOT Gods to create life life that!

There are chances that if the baby is alive she\'s very unstable and can die next week.
Hmm.. I totally forgot my opinion about this.

Opinion: I cannot say if i am for cloning or not. But i see cloning as a fasinating thing.
But i am against it if the clones are\'nt cared like a real human and NOT as a subject.
Also they have to understand what they are and what they can do. Also there\'s a HIGH chance that they\'ll be discriminated, and won\'t have the same rights as real humans have (X-men?). Also they should have the good things like: Love, caring.
But they must not see the bad side of the world. I want to see a difference in the world by these clones, not for evil but for the good of the world.
I do not believe there is a god. There is only ourselves. The possibilities are unlimited but only time can tell us what it will be....

Cloning a human being would be possible but I simply cannot see it taking place. Whan something is cloned, the DNA is copied no-matter what state the DNA is in. Whan someone is an adult, the DNA starts to break down - very slowly, but it does happen. This is called the ageing process. If you do clone an adult, then the DNA in the new-born baby would be partially damaged. On top of this, the ageing process in a clone gets speeded up.
However, if a new-born baby was cloned, the DNA wouldn\'t be damaged at all. Yes the aging process is speeded up, but as a youngster, the child is still growing so it could fix itself. The problem with this, is that like a natural child, you have no way of controlling the child. That\'s OK for a natural child because this is what\'s intended. But with a clone, what would be the point:conf:? I mean, if this is what you want, why not have a natural birth and if you can\'t, there\'s always testtube-babies.
Remember, the DNA can only be a good,in a child, as it originally was.

First thing of all... This is not a message that i\'ve returned. I\'m just doing some \"unfinished business\".

Let me begin..

*clears throat* A couple of weeks ago a man that had 6 kids and a wife had a fight with his wife. Not to interesting huh? Well it gets even better! The fight got worser and the man burned a jacket of one of his kids and the house burned down. His wife was heavly injured, 5 kids died the other one had luck because she was staying in her aunt\'s house. Well then... That man got a punishment of 15 years in prison (15 YEARS IN PRISON!!! Man, I could personally kill him in the back of his head!) and now he\'s complaining that it\'s too long... (WTF! He\'s d*mn lucky that he did\'nt have 400 years!) Now then... The court does\'nt give sh*t about his complains. But this man has\'nt quit that complain yet... Now he\'s telling that he did\'nt do it \"On purpose\"... Again, the court does\'nt give sh*t about it....
