I have. I've even played it. Heck, I OWN it, and Prima's official strategy guide with monster list and merging recipes.

I'll post up a review of the game, once I get off work and actually get around to playing it a bit. Xp It's been a while... I've even forgotten what the main town is called. XD

Anywho, this topic will be for conversation regarding this game. Personally, I think it's a great game, and worth spending time on if you can find it.

I remember this game. It came out when I was young. It's about monster breeding, right? It was rated M so I couldn't get it. _-_

My brother and I have played Jade Cacoon II. That counts, right? Have you ever played 2, or just 1? I've never seen 1 anywhere myself.

So ooh, ooh, what are your favorite types of beasts? Do beast hunters have masks in your game? If so, which type of mask is your favorite? Huh? Huh? Huh?

My favorite types of beasts are Alcos. I love to use those sharp weapons to irritate and blind my enemies. It's very hard to hit a fast enemy when you're blind. ^_^ My favorite type of masks are probably the Slimies or the Garas.

But then again, that might just be a bunch of gibberish if you haven't played II. :hehe:

EDIT: I know Jade Caccoon II wasn't M. It was barely T.

A rated "M" Jade Cocoon? XP Naa... It's rated "T". It's for the original Playstation. I got my used copy for about $15 bucks.

It's about this boy named Levant who has to become a Cocoon Master because the end of the world is coming... or something of that jest. Cocoon Masters use cocoons to trap monsters (which trapped monsters are called "Fireflies"). Fireflies are eeeevil and aren't usable unless they purify them.

In order for him to be a Cocoon Master in the first place is to marry a woman from the Nagi tribe. So our little to-be Cocoon Master Levant marries his best friend Mahbu so he could use her powers of purification. She could purify the fireflies, merge them, or weave them into silk (the only means of getting money in the game). Although Levant wants to build up his levels and get much more powerful monsters, he is afraid to because every time Mahbu uses her magic she gets sicker and sicker.

To make matters worse (End of the world, check. Newly wed wife dying, check.), the village that Levant and Mahbu lives in hates the Nagi. So Mahbu is getting sick and getting hated on whenever she leaves the house.

That's mostly all that I could understand. The background story is about why the end of the world is coming. It was something about this one Spirit got angry at some other two spirits for creating humans. Then there is another side story about this prince that met this Forest Spirit and... *scratches my head* ...something about the first Cocoon Master? Eh... something like that...

The whole game is kinda boring. There's story but hardly any character development. Levant and Mahbu doesn't seem to have much of a bond. If the manual and some sentences from the game didn't mention they were best friends, I would have thought they were total strangers forced to marry. Also the gameplay is linear, controls aren't very good, and it gets repetitive... real quick. To sum up the whole game, think of a Pokemon game with a dark and serious theme.

Pluses about this game is that you marry. XP (Okay... that's probably not considered a plus for most people when buying a game. ^^; ) The monsters, although aren't extremely customizable, you could create your own by merging different monster types to create hybrids. Some monster hybrids are really cool looking and powerful, but it takes a lot of time and luck to get the right look and abilities you want. Art design is good and atmosphere is interesting. Oh yea, then you reach high levels, weak monsters run away from you when you get close (so you can skip meaningless battles).

I might pick up Jade Cocoon 2. I don't know.

Something like that, I remember THIS part, at least. Xp (Sorry, I didn't get right to playing it after work. Sis has the PS2 locked up in her room, so I went to building stages on MMPU, and thinking up PsycheMan's character design. He's finished, yay!)

Anywho, the story goes that Levant is the son of Riketz, widely known as the "Lion of Parel", the greatest cocoon master ever known. However, one day, Riketz vanished in the forest, leaving Levant with his mother.

Now, in the game, you live in a small town which recognizes the forest as off-limits domain, as there are wild and unruly monsters lurking within. To keep these monsters at bay, each of the villages has a "Cocoon Master", who travels into the forest and tames/battles the monsters within, keeping the village safe is basically his job. The monsters are considered sacred beasts, so killing them is avoided whenever possible, which makes them an even more immediate threat.

Currently, as I allready mentioned, Levant's father has gone missing, so the village is a bit defenseless.

As the game starts, you find yourself playing the role of Levant, who is just coming of the right age to become a cocoon master. This means that he will take his Father's place as the Lion of Parel and go out into the forest and tame the beasts within.

Of course... this wasn't planned to actually occur for a long while, but it did anyway.

Especially after the Onibubu attacked...

Just a bit later through the game, the entire village gets hit by an "Onibubu" attack. Onibubu are nicknamed the "Locusts of the Apocalypse", and are huge, ugly bugs that spread an evil poison which turns people into stone.

Luckily, Mother Garai had manged to pull up a magical barrier just in time to keep the damage to a minimum, only a few of the villagers were, no pun intended, "stoned".

Anywho, the only known cure for this stone sickness is the legendary "calabas herb", which lies deep within the forest. Seeing as only a Cocoon master can enter the forest, the village elders decide it's time for Levant to step up to the plate, even though it's way earlier than planned.

Of course... this includes a marriage to Mahbu, as all Cocoon masters must have a Nagi wife to purify the angry souls of the beasts they capture. And Mahbu, being the only Nagi woman in the village left, ends up being that person. Of course, this engagement was destined since she was born... so it's not like it was a big surprise.

Anywho, you're now officially married to Mahbu, and you go into the forest, tame beasts, fight poachers, and mix monsters to make awesome new monsters with various skills and magics. Life is sweet. Xp

I managed to not only beat the game, but I also unlocked the Endless Corridor bonus. (Wait until the credits end, then save when it asks you to afterward. Start from the new save and you'll have access to the "Endless corridor", which is an endless forest with tons of new monsters not available in the main game.)

As for JC2, I didn't even know there WAS a sequal... I'd probably get it if I knew where to find it. Xp

Hehe... Levant's the bad guy in Jade Cocoon 2! Basically, I think he does something like "fuse with the darkness" or something like that. If I ever pick it up again I'll try to figure out exactly what happened.

I haven't beaten Jade Cocoon 2 yet... I'm currently about at the part where

you've gotten rid of your tail and are going to try and stop Levant, but you can't touch him. So you have to disable some elemental-themed areas around his big evil cocoon first.

Or something like that.

Man, why is anything where you collect a group of monsters like Pokemon? The game doesn't play a thing like Pokemon (at least JCII doesn't). Sure, you collect monsters, but the plot is completely different, the battle system isn't anything close to the same with the Beast Amulet and all, and the monsters really don't even look very similar. They're very different games; the only similarities are monsters and monster evolution.

The only explanation here is that Dranzer's secretly a rabid pokemon fan.

No real anti-pokemon personality would bother comparing things to it. :P

Anywho, DigiMon had allready tagged the whole "training monsters to fight against each other" deal long before Poke Mon was even an IDEA. The only thing Pokemon added was catching them.

Catching and fighting monsters are the only two similarities to Pokemon that Jade Cocoon can hail.

Then again, Cocoom Masters have the guts to fight monsters on their own, while Pokemon trainers rely completely on their little monster pals who look WAY too cute to be ready to fight. :P

Erm, wrong, I didn't say it's bad, i'm just saying when I look at a game like this or Monster Rancher I have to compare it to Digimon or Pokemon for the sake of noting all of the similarities. That's why I call it "Pokemon".

But the problem with that is that the games are so different from eachother. Pokemon games, Digimon games, Jade Cacoon games, and Monster Rancher games don't play similarly at all. Monsters are really the only common factor, and Monster Rancher games don't even feature evolution.

Besides, nobody ever said you didn't like the games, we just said there's no real grounds to call it "Pokemon for the PS2."

Ok! I beat the JC2. Let me see if I can give you all the runthrough...

Okay, to set the story:
After whatever Levant did in Jade Cocoon, he got together his friends to form the Beast Hunters. Divine beasts in the Forests gained the "Knowledge of Darkness," which supposedly allows them to think. They now take the form of humans in an attempt to purify the forests by invading the human territory. These creatures are known as Kalma. The Beast Hunter's job is to purify them and gain their cocoons, with which to merge and gain stronger divine beasts for use in their own Beast Amulet fighting team.

The hero of the game is Kahu. He is now ready to join the Beast Hunters and fight Kalma. However, when he enters the forest, he accidently touches a special Kalma cocoon. This was the "Cocoon of Darkness," which was the key to unlocking the power of Lilith. With the Cocoon awakens Nico, a fairy who acts as Kahu's guide. Because of the cocoon's curse, Kahu will turn into a Kalma if he does not collect the four orbs of the forests (Fire, Earth, Water, Wind) at the deepest levels and have Levant perform a ritual.

Long story short, you do. Once you have gathered all of the orbs, Levant performs the ritual.

Spoiler (click to toggle)
However, the game obviously doesn't end here. Levant removes your tail and the curse... and places it upon himself. With the power of darkness, Levant plans to revive Lilith at the Lilith's Nest in the Forest of Darkness. Levant had become immortal with his earlier victory, but he had been forced to live forever and watch his friends die around him. He blames Elrihm, the God of the Forest, for his plight. He plans to revive the Liliths to exterminate the humans and spread the forest's power. Levant himself will be the sacrifice, which will allow him to gain his wish of death at the same time.

Mahbu became the spirit of hope when she died. She speaks through Nico and requests that Kahu stop Levant's ambition. Kahu enters the Forest of Darkness, but discovers that he cannot enter the Lilith's Nest until he defeats the Disciples of Darkness, former friends who were trapped in the forest and corrupted.

Long story short, you do. When all four Disciples are defeated (again, Fire, Earth, Wind, Water), you gain wings as a mark of your becoming a Disciple of Elrihm (which he doesn't fully understand). Kahu then enters the Lilith's Nest and passes through it until he reaches Levant. Levant has not yet initiated the ritual, so Kahu is able to fight him and defeat him (in the battle, Levant is able to transform into the final form of a Drac type monster, a huge blue dragon with wings and fangs. Can anyone explain the reason for that, or was it random?). Anyways, when Levant is defeated, the Lilith is able to revive anyway by feeding upon the darkness in Levant's soul. By purifying Lilith, Kahu is able to rescue Levant's soul and Levant can finally rest in peace.

So, that's basically the plot. After beating the game you unlock the Beast Tournaments, so I might try that now.

On a side note, in this game the Calabas Herb is an item which brings a monster back to life with full health and MP.

Holy shiz. That's awesome! I'm glad that, at the very least, Levant didn't turn evil without a reason.

You say Levant's final form is
Spoiler (click to toggle)
a blue dragon
, eh? Well, I think I can shed some light on to why this may be.

Spoiler (click to toggle)
In Jade Cocoon 1, you learn that Levant is the "Chosen one of Light", who will confront the "Chosen one of Darkness". The symbol representing him is a white dragon that glows with a blueish aura.
