Erm... you posted this topic twice.. and WHAT book are you talking to? There are THREE LotR books, and Tolkien wrote many others... also, it's not really a big deal that Saruman smokes a pipe... so do Gandalf, and a lot of others.

Yea, you have to be specific on where you read this. Tolken made other books other than the Lord of the Rings. There are also my books not made by Tolken that make fun of his books/stories.

Technically, Tolkien wrote six books in the main Lord of the Rings story, althrough they're almost always being published as three novels.

well i used <ENTER> for a new line but it posted a new topic so sorry about that.... and the board said:''you can't post blank posts, so the topic isn't posted. And about the book it's made by the son of J.R.R Tolkien and is based on his notes for making new stories. To be specific about the name the official name of the book is: unfinished tales:of Númenor and Middle Earth - London: Allen and Unwin. but I'm Dutch and had to translate some things and so the page numbers, chapters etc. Isn't the same as in the English version. And about shadowfire's question: the funny thing is that saruman is making fun of blowing pipes towards Gandalf and is at the same time blowing a pipe.

Actually, I believe I'd heard about that- that Saruman taking pipeweed from the Shire was supposed to be a secret of his because he was always down on Gandalf for smoking. I can't see how it would make much of a story, though. =P

Well a little part is true he did bring the pipeweed with him from the Shire and when he tried it he got enslaved to it. BTW: it was a very little part of the story about saruman and that he knew that the Shire existed while Sauron was searching for the master-ring.

That's actually a nice little touch, because it makes Saruman that much more self-righteous, but it's over something a lot less serious.
