Yeah, it's going from 2D to DS 3D! That's more than a usual remake.

I'm antsy to get my hands on this game.

It also looks like there will be a mail system via WiFi. I don't have a source for this information at the moment, but I read it at Gamespot.

From what I read, the plot stays mostly the same, but the four characters are given separate personalities. They were pretty much anonymous in the original game.

I've got to say that Square-Enix seems to be aiming to outdo themselves with this remake. It sure is looking impressive. It could be very interesting if they manage the improve the game enough that it doesn't feel as clunky as a NES RPG. Now, the question is: when you spend so much time rebuilding a old game from the ground up, why not create a brand new title?

Well I think it's always better to use an old, good idea than a new one that might be worse. ;p

online battle like golden sun had? do you mean "your-team-against-my-team"-battles, and those online?

and i don't think you get far at first with just 4 White Mages, maybe after they learn Holy or an ability which Zombiefies all enemies, which they propably can't.

I'd rather see a new idea with some potential instead of completely recycling an outdated game. I'd understand if this was a normal remake, but this is really a near complete restart.

Of course, since the original game was never released in North America, there's nothing to complain about. However, when you consider that Square-Enix makes their games for Japan first, where the game has indeed been released...

Well, IIRC it was supposed to be US-only GBA remake. Of course, the GBA got replaced by the DS now so it's possible that S-E change their plans.

GameFAQs is also listing a Japanese release date along with an European one, so...

I think it's funny that Japan gets an earlier release on this, since they've already had it in the past. x.x

Yeah, I agree with the above post. In fact, some games, such as the two GBA Metroid games, had earlier USA/Canada and Europe releases than Japan releases.

And if they do change the plot, I hope there's some way to access the original game, in original format (possibly with updated graphics). Considering that all of us who aren't Japanese haven't played the "real original" game, and considering its small size (it's an NES game), I think it should be stuffed somewhere in the package as an unlockable at least, if not a mode that's selectable at the start. (Such as seeing, on the title menu, Classic or Modern mode, where Modern mode just includes some changed dialogue and stuff.)

That's because Metroid isn't that popular in Japan. Nintendo probably figured that it'd better to release it in North America first.

What I wanna know is why wasn't 3 packaged with 4 in chronicals instead of Chrono Trigger in the PS1 remake serese (Origins, Chronicals, Anthology.)? I mean I like Chrono trigger and all, but I would have preferred having the solid serese of Final Fantasy 1-9 on my PS1. Dunno if anyone else agrees with me or if this is completely off topic.

The explanation is simple enough: when Square released Final Fantasy Chronicles, they hadn't done any remake of Final Fantasy 3. They probably figured that it'd be easier to package together two SNES games instead of a SNES and a NES game that would require a major set of updates.

:off topic: also the metroid prime games were made in America. Retro studios is an american side company of Nintendo. at least i believe they were. something like RareWare was, few years back

:on topic: this game was never released here, so we can't say if this game would have been a success or not. the gaming industry wasn't as flourishing as it is now. But this game looks good, a little childish theme (which i like), hopefully plays good, Wi-Fi options, so i think that will be alright.

Rephrased because people won't shut up:
Everyone outside Japan calls FF6 FF3 even though it isn't.

Personally, I love the game. The only thing that bugs me is the magic system and some loading times, but other than that it's great.

7.5/10 from me.
