Set in the distant future, Dead Space revolves around Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who works for the Concordance Extraction Corporation (C.E.C), a company that operates "giant mining ships" throughout the galaxy. His company receives a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a “Planet Cracker” class ship that destroys planets in order to extract valuable ore. Assuming that a mechanical failure is the only problem, Isaac and two other C.E.C employees set out to rendezvous with the Ishimura. However, they discover that the ship has been overrun by Necromorphs, a hostile alien race dependent upon necrotic flesh. Separated from his party, Isaac must survive the Necromorph infestation and battle his way to safety through the Ishimura's various environments.

That's the general plot. And, these Necromorphs, are scary. They come from around every corner and vent. They know you have a weapon, and try their best to overrun you with some flanking and group tactics. Primitive group tactics that is. They'll surround you and duck into a vent to surprise you, but when on the attack, they rush with everything they've got. Well that's when you shoot them in the head right? Nope.

Combat in Dead Space is complicated by the fact that Necromorphs do not simply "die" after receiving a certain number of gun rounds. In fact, depending on how they are wounded, Necromorphs can adopt new stances and tactics, even sprouting new limbs in the process. To defeat the Necromorphs, Isaac must utilize "strategic dismemberment," the methodical severance of specific limbs or sections of the Necromorphs. Dead Space's executive producer, Glen Schofield, has said that "the primary theme of Dead Space is dismemberment," and early previews of the game have noted the high levels of gore.

Yes, there is blood. SO MUCH BLOOD,in fact. Sense your beginning weapon is a plasma cutter, a handheld blade shooter essentially, you'll be tearing these beasts from limb to limb. But hey, this means nothing if it doesn't look good right? Well put your worries away if you have this, cause the game looks absolutely amazing. From watching some stray asteroids fall through the nothingness of space to walking down a dimmed hallway, your breath will be taken away by the detail of each piece of iron that made this giant ship.

And the atmosphere! For those who have played Silent Hill, expect that sort of constant creepiness to continually prick at your spine as you walk down each blood pained room or dimly lit hallway. Each room will leave you wondering when will the next bunch of monsters come running at you? This is only amplified by the sound. The Necromorph's running and grunting can be heard all around you as they scurry through the vents that surround you. Occasionally you'll even hear the screams of a new found victim rip through the air.

Put bluntly, this game is terrifying. But amazing. This is the sort of game that will make you wet your pants and then you'll buy five more for some more run throughs.

If anyone loved Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or maybe one of the Alien movies, or John Carpenter's the Thing, you'll love this game.
