If there's no data you need on that drive, you could just reformat it. The console has a built-in format command, which would most likely prepare it for you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906502

WD is shitty. They often do this on normal computers too. Especially if you have the "portable" kind that does not require it's own power source.

External hard drives. Internal my be different. I've had 7 different WD external drives and almost all of them have either randomly stopped working for no apparent reason, and/or were not detected by most computers. MyBook is from Western Digital. One was solved by WD official support, and then broke itself again. In looking for the solution with one of the problems, I came across numerous posts in which people state they always have trouble with Western Digital external drives.
