Truth to be told, though, will most people care? By that point, Left 4 Dead will be almost three years old, that's a lot of time for people to play it. In fact, most commercial games nowadays don't even get talked about three years later...

I'll bet that the porting work is fairly straightforward, so there was no big reason to hold back on doing that. At that point, why not? :)

L4D1 still has it's diehard fans. And on top of that, most people have both installed just so they can play thru the old maps (Dead Air from L4D1 is still easily one of my favorites, I have L4D installed so I can run thru it from time to time).

The porting process should actually be a bit time consuming if you consider the following:

1: L4D1 lacked the Jockey, Charger, and Spitter. Valve has to go back and comb thru each level to re-balance the gameplay.

2: The L4D2 models are actually a bit chunker compared to L4D1, so the maps need to be upscaled, which means the need to rework some textures.

3: They need to go back to the old zombie models and apply the L4D2 gore system to them. In L4D1, the most gore you'd get was a limb being removed and a HL2 blood splat. Naturally there's a bit more work in the L4D2 system there.

Here's a comparison. The Australian version features pretty much the same gore as L4D1, except naturally in the first game the ragdolls stayed for a while after death. After watching them back to back the difference is REALLLLLLLLLLLLY obvious.
