I just acquired an HP Pavilion dv7-1170us HOWEVER I was told that the previous owner took it to the geek squad and they told him that the mobo was fried.

Im wondering if this is exactly true. See when I press the power button, it powers up, the screen does NOT turn on (And he said its a new screen), the fans spinning really fast you can hear it, the lights on the keyboard are on, then the fan stops and silence. All in about 2 seconds. The screen never comes on, the fan isnt working, and the lights stay on.

If its true that the motherboard is fried in it, how would I get a new one? I would much rather be the one to replace the motherboard.

I've seen a series of laptops die due to a defective motherboard, and the symptoms were close to what you're describing. I can't be 100% sure that it's the same situation for you, but it's possible.

If you're comfortable enough in dismantling and putting back together a complex electronic device, get your computer's maintenance manual and read a bit of it to understand what's inside before getting started. With a bit of luck, you might even find the specific part number you need.

With that info in hand, try calling up HP and asking for the computer parts department. You might even want to give a shot at going through the business support: they'll probably be ready to help you too, and you might get faster replies from them. Note that buying a new motherboard will probably cost a few hundred dollars, you need to make sure first that it's worth your money.

Oh yea I've done some research on the subject first. The motherboard costs 203 from one site and a new hard drive costs 99. The entire model if I buy it new costs 771 from Amazon. I would be saving a lot of money by just getting a new motherboard. The thing doesnt have a manual to refer to unfortunately and also getting any sort of support on it would cost money Im afraid. I found this out by going to HPs website and looking up the product number. The warrentys expired is why.
