That'd actually have been a great idea. It was repeated many times over the years that the main thing holding back Legends 3 was the lack of proof that it'd have sold properly. Running a Kickstarter program with a target set to recoup the development costs only would have proven that the goal could be reached, and that the audience was waiting. At that point, the game would've been guaranteed to make some profits from extra non-supported sales in stores and online, either from people who never heard of the Kickstarter program or those picking up the game at random.
The problem is, this is too innovative for the current Capcom, and I don't mean this in a "haha Crapcom is teh sux!!1" way. The two projects cancelled in 2011 were supposed to be signs of renewal for the franchine. One was a downloadable game with DLC and plenty of add-on characters, meant to bring in a new audience by using modern game design techniques. The other focused on the fanbase to provide feedback on various parts of development, and to prove that it'd sell through the release of a demo. Both projects were heavily pushed by Inafune, but quickly killed once he left the company. Capcom is currently playing it very safe, like many Japanese game makers, and even the idea of doing something through a platform like Kickstarer won't be considered by them.
Forget tomorrow, it passed the $550,000 mark this morning.

It's fun to see the numbers grow!
EDIT: Nevermind that,
TJ's already yelling about it.
