I'm looking at buying a few series, some of which are available in both HD and SD. The HD version tends to run 30-50% pricier than the SD version. Do animated shows actually benefit from the higher resolution, to the point that the price difference is worth it, or are the standard versions perfectly fine when using a good player?

HD versions tend to have animation corrections to fix bad quality from the TV runs. Take Nanoha StrikerS for example.

Compare the TV version: http://youtu.be/stcdeabi8WU?t=29s
to the DVD version: http://youtu.be/67g7Q9eX0W4

What RD said. Regular format works just fine usually but if you have a 36 inch or larger television you're going to what HD, otherwise it looks like really bad quality. I've got a 56 inch TV and if I don't get super high quality, it looks like it needs to buffer.

Yes HD is definitely a plus for bigger TVs and in general I love HD lol. I don't know how I ever went without it now... bu yeah, on smaller tv/monitors, SD is fine.

I don't see a difference between HD and SD, generally -- if anything I think the less crisp graphics sometimes smooths out jarring juxtaposition of "obvious" background and "obvious" ground, and other artifacts of animation.
