Well, this seems significant in the developments of the field of particle physics, at least!

There are two things that surprise me with this news:
- They already found it. The LHC is still quite young, and last I checked isn't even running at it's full power yet!
- Peter Higgs, one of the men who postulated this particle's existance, is still alive! This is the kind of discovery you expect to see a few decades after a man's death.

Fun article to read, and I didn't know that Prof Hawking still has enough facial control to crack a smile. :)

On related LHC news, I found this fascinating article a few days ago. Science is fun!

Pictures of the LHC area always fascinating. It's art and science as only billions of dollars euros can express.

Can't wait for them to identify the mass particle, so we can have sub-atomic weight loss gimmicks! "I lost 50000000 micrograms on the Higgs diet!" The future is coming...

Peter Higgs still being alive during the discovery is pretty significant, yeah. The man himself said he was incredibly happy it happened during his lifetime, even being reduced to tears at one point!

I actually used to think of Hawking as this really purely scientific guy, very serious and all, so to have hear him talk on the radio about bets and smiling and all is nice, gives a different, more normal human view of him for me. :)
