The golem locked itself on the two of them, and it became too late to argue. Golems could be killed, it was true, but John had never seen it done before. No one living from Thimbelatch had either, for that matter. But he'd stayed behind to distract the thing, and if she wanted to sacrifice herself for strangers, it was her choice. Who knew--maybe she was strong enough to actually kill it.
Nodding at Atalanta, he scrambled up the rocks, and began to shout at the creature aggressively until it growled back at him, reaching low for another projectile. He had the advantage of size, in this case, and he hoped he could keep it distracted until it tired him out or he made a mistake. Either way, his life was in her hands now.

"Stamarians," Aleina repeated, pronouncing the word carefully and with a touch of distaste. She rose slower than him but followed him to the door. "Do you think that's wise, given everything else?" No doubt Elle'n would throw a fit if she knew Larent was going to try and lay the first bricks of her empire with nothing but rubble.
