So Facebook went and bought the company developing the Oculus Rift, the VR headset meant for gaming. Zuckerberg claims that they intend to keep and continue it's gaming development, but also further the technology in "other ways".

Frankly, I'm just pissed off that we're gonna have this anticipated VR headset have a Facebook requirement, as if we didn't have enough of that shit all over the internet. I refuse to support Facebook, so if the Oculus Rift requires it, I won't be supporting it either. Ugh.

Not everyone is happy with the move, of course. You Minecraft fans can kiss Minecraft support for the Rift goodbye; Persson already tweeted that he canceled the deal he was making with the company, as he finds Facebook to be creepy.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I saw the news last night and could barely believe it. What does Facebook have to do with VR??

I haven't looked at the Oculus too closely since its launch, as I'm not convinced that the tech is there yet, but it seems like they had been doing major progress overall. It might not be so bad if Facebook keeps Oculus operating as a separate entity; but then, why do the purchase if they don't plan some level of integration? I don't want to login to Facebook just to use a VR headset...

"...have a Facebook requirement, as if we didn't have enough of that shit all over the internet" is exactly what annoys me. Check our latest photo album on Facebook! Follow us on Facebook for news! Like our Facebook page to enter our contests!

How about NO?

That's an easy question to answer, Doc. Money. Why would an electric company buy a car manufacturer? Separate income. Why stick to one thing when you can branch out?

More likely it has to do with ad revenue, which is where facebook makes ALL the money ever printed. With streaming becoming a major practice among pretty much everyone now, and with ads being played before and during streaming, there's a lot of potential advertisement money to be made there. Additionally, with the advent of Google Glass, it's not long before the advertisement behemoth is following suit.
