Skype and Discord? No way. By the time I heard of Discord, message boards of the type where people actually "know" each other had been unlikely for a long time, and I would have been around the second group of people to be using it, since my boyfriend would have been within the first group, as far as I can tell. Back when people thought Discord was going to be a real/fast/FOSS-like type of software without surveillance and other atrocities, because the design made it visually look like it was.
And as for Skype, that's just another AIM or Yahoo! messenger. Which anyone who became friends IRL is definitely using the whole time, and most people in general. Unless you meant something like people uninstalling MSN to avoid Skype, but then the other, better messengers were still available, along with Trillian/Pidgin. And of course a board can still be populous without people also IM'ing every day.
