The beast's hearing was notably better than those of humans, so he heard everything Maya said even though she was whispering. "No, child. I am something far worse." The creature said to the small girl. "I'm what is commonly referred to as a soul reaver."
"You are?" Mercy asked in astonishment. "But, I thought there was only one, and he died long ago."
"The stories of my defeat were greatly exaggerated." The being said to Mercy, still sounding rather somber. "Sadly, I live on." He muttered to himself.
"So that means you are Veritas." Mercy stated with excitement. He had heard many stories of the great soul reaver, Veritas, but he had never dreamed he'd one day meet that legend.
"How does a child such as yourself know about me?"
"I know many things. It's a bit of a long story, but let's just say I've been around for a long time." He said in quite a childish fashion. "Oh, my name is Mercy, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Mercy. And who is the young girl hiding behind you?" Veritas asked kindly as he stood there staring at the pair.

"Wurse dan alien?" Maya whispered even softer. "Does dat make him exta-plana?" The girl asked in a quiet tone as her eyes turned to Mercy as she still hid half behind him. She wanted to keep her eyes away from the being, slightly frightening by his bearing and appearance. "Wa's your pogram number?" She asked a little more loudly of the being, though still not quite looking into its direction. "Do you know daddy?"
