The Simpsons- a bunch of useless stuff (ways to work jokes in without making fulll episodes) all leading up to the main story

Family Guy- a majority of its funnyness (sp? even a word?) in in flashbacks or visions

In FLCL, much of its humor comes from its references. Different episodes use cameos from Lupin III and South Park, just to name two.
