Ok Well I have a story for both sides of my family my mothers side is MUCH cooler.
Clan Campbell of Argyll, Scotland(mom side); descended from Pictish tribes of Strathclyde; the name first appeared in records when Gillespie Campbell acquired a grant of land in 1263; he had married the heiress of O’Dune and inherited from her the Lordship of Loch Awe and initially the Campbells were Clan O’Duine, later called Clan Diarmid. Their first seat was Innischonnel Castle on Loch Awe. In 1296 Sir Cailen Mor Campbell was killed by the Macdougals, Lords of Lorne and from then on all Campbell chiefs are known as Mac Cailein Mor. His son, Sir Neil Campbell supported Robert the Bruce and gained much lands from the alliance, including those of the Macdougals. He also married Robert’s sister. Their son John was created Earl of Atholl and was killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, dying without issue. Sir Duncan Campbell of Loch Awe was created Lord Campbell in 1445 and his grandson Colin, was created Earl of Argyll in 1457 and also inherited through his wife the Lordship of Lorne from which the lymphad of Somerled appeared on the Campbell arms. Another branch, the Campbells of Glenorchy became the Earls of Breadalbane. Other branches became Earls of Loudoun and from an arranged marriage, the Earls of Cawdor. As guardian of the infant Campbell, Earl of Argyll, Campbell of Cawdor was murdered in 1592 in a bid to secure the chiefship of the clan, but the young earl survived. In 1607, Macdonald lands at Kintyre were granted to Archibald, 7th Earl of Argyll and in 1615, the Macdonald islands of Islay and most of Jura were granted to Campbell of Cawdor. For supporting the Covenant during the Civil War, the clan suffered massive defeats by the Macdonalds and Archibald, 8th Earl of Argyll was executed after the Restoration. His son was executed for supporting the rebellion of Monmouth against James II.
