In my Programming class at school, our final is to make a game of some sort in Visual Basic. Most people chose card games, others chose variations on simple computer games like Minesweeper, and one guy is working on Russian Roulette. I, however chose to make an RPG Battle System. It's going to have some items and slightly animated battles. However, it will be pretty simple as far as RPGs go. But everything will be made from scratch.

So here's what I really wanted to get to: the characters. I'm making the sprites for this, and I want to get some input before I actually get to making the animated parts. Here they are thus far:

I'd really like some comments and criticism on this. Thanks in advance.

Luckily my mouse has a built-in magnifier, but otherwise I can't make out the intricate details of the sprites. They look good. I'd suggest blowing them up about 400% though.

Ugh, you might want to do a resize that doesn't make the pixels to have varying sizes... This looks like a bad sprite comic. Try this instead:

The level of details on those is quite surprising. I think that there's something odd about the dog's second eye, but that might be caused by the background, which has a similar color.

Look at the pixels in the player's knee. In the first image, they're slightly squished. Dr. Cossack's image has pixels of equal size and shape.

I think it'd be possible to do an animated RPG with only a few frames.

Player Frames (minimum?)
-idle (preparing to attack. maybe include 1 more so he's sort of doing that 'bouncing breathing' thing)
-teleport (cheap anime-like way of showing that you're moving towards the enemy. Could consist of the idle frame stretched in height by maybe 25% with every other vertical line missing. This would only appear for about .01 seconds followed by the idle frame within striking distance of the enemy.)
-attack (sword at a position that looks like it's already slashed plus an explosion or a 'hit' sprite on the enemy)

Also, it'd be neat to have the amount of damage dealt above the enemy for a second like in other RPGs. Good luck with this, I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Well, I have nearly everything done now. I have the basic battle system, a simple magic system, a couple of items, and around 30-50% of the graphics (mostly menus and such, unfortunately) done.

I noticed what you said about the dog's eye, Doc, and I think it's the background (I didn't notice the color similarity at the time). However, I might want to make the far eye darker, partly to make it more prominent, partly to make it agree with the shading more.

As for the things you mentioned, pocket, that's more or less what I was going to do, though you definitely pointed out some things that I would like to do. Also, I've already tried something along the lines of the damage over the enemy/player, but for some reason the code doesn't seem to want to work. I can't see anything wrong with it, but I'll do my best to have that fixed for the final version.

If all goes well, the battle system should be finished by the end of the month. I'll upload whatever version I have then, and then I might add some other things, like multiple enemies, a level up system, purchaseable items, and generally better. I might just make this a major project to keep me occupied over the summer, though I won't make any promises.

I mentioned in my last post that I made a magic system for the game. Well, I've got one of the spells (out of the two, the second is still in the works), mostly done. Here's the animation so far:

Image

I made that flame in around one to one and a half hours. All that's left to add to the animation is a damage frame for the enemy.

EDIT: Ack! I found out today that Visual Basic can't load animated GIFs! This is a problem, and it could take awhile to fix it unless I can find something that lets me put the animations in the game. Any suggestions?
