23 May 2002 - By Doctacosa
As of the July 26, 2003, the content of this post has been replaced with a new set of rules. Further posts might no longer reflect the latest rules, so be sure to refer to this post for the latest info.

This page displays the different rules in use on the message board, and must be read and agreed with before registering. I don\'t want to be mean to anyone, but rules have to be set to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Failure to follow these rules will have me giving you a warning. Extremely offensive gestures or repetitive offences might lead to a permanent ban.

GLOBAL RULES

1- No spamming. What is considered spam: posting several short messages in a row, making only short messages without any goal (answering only \"Yes\", \"Me too\", \"LOL\", etc), making the same post or topic in several forums, making pointless messages, etc. Abusive use of the private messenging system falls into the category of spam too. Massive use of smilies in also frowned upon. I do give warnings, so don\'t be too afraid of breaking this rule without knowing it.

2- One username by person. I allow only ONE username by person. If you are creating a new one to change your personality or evade ban/warnings, you\'ll be found out and the latest username you registered will be deleted. However, a family member creating a new username is fine.

3- Mark your spoilers. Why ruin the fun for someone? Don\'t post about a movie or game recently released without properly marking the spoilers. Allow several months before believing it\'s safe to stop marking spoilers. Not everyone gets through a new game in 2 weeks. I really hate learning about the plot of a movie or game before I get to see it / play it myself. Don\'t you?

4- No fights. Come on... We\'re here to have fun, not to get at each other\'s throats. If you can\'t get along with another user, please keep it in private. We don\'t want to hear about it. Also, be sure to stay polite toward everyone. Don\'t make insults toward other cultures or religions. Repetitive offensing posts will result in a quick ban.

5- No ROM and warez requests / links. Asking for ROMs or warez, and giving links to such files will not be tolerated. This also applies to emulators. While those are technically legal, they are used with the purpose of using illegal games. If you are interested in a game, you don\'t download it, you buy it. ROM hacks are allowed if you post only about a patch (in IPS format). Hacked ROMs fall in the \"ROM\" category. All illegal software is affected by this rule.

6- Appropriate content. The site is for everyone, and minors can very well be viewing those pages, so use content meant for a general audience only. Inappropriate content will deserve a warning, an edit or a deletion, depending of the offence.

7- Check your spelling. Yes, I\'m one of those so-called \"Grammar and Spelling Nazi\". I\'m not asking for everyone to use a perfectly written English, but I do want to see a good spelling. \"u c, i told u\", \"omg ur rite wtf lol\" and such are horribly getting on my nerves. Proper capitalization is also to be used. Just make a bit of an effort while writting your posts, please. It also adds to the image people are getting from you.

MESSAGE BOARD SPECIFIC NOTES

Marking spoilers: If you want to mark a spoiler, please use the following BBCode: [*spoiler]This is a spoiler.[*/spoiler] , without the stars. This will put the spoiler in a black box, so it cannot be read unless the user chooses too.

Signatures: The signatures shouldn\'t be more than 200 pixels of height, pictures included. The text should be limited to a few lines only. The point of this is to reduce the space taken by those signatures.

Image

Other policies: There are a few topics in the Important Notices forum, and all of these should be read (the first few posts of each topic is an acceptable minimum).

All of these might sound harsh, but I just wanted to make sure that everything is clear. Keep in mind that I won\'t ban you if you make an innocent mistake, or if you forgot about one of the minor rules. I tend to give several warnings, but don\'t abuse that either. If you break rules on purpose, you WILL get in trouble. I don\'t ban at the first offence, unless you break several rules at once.

Have fun! ^_^

How about having all new members only allowed to read the rules untill read?

When you register, even before you register, there is a link to the rules here. But obviously, like most newbies, you didn\'t click it, or forgot about it.

Of course, it would help if there was a list of the rules there before you register, and underneath each rule you need to click some button to say that you agree with that rule. Only if you agree with all rules, you are allowed to register, and thereby become a member.

I still don\'t know that the method would keep n00bs out. Think about it. The types of people who read the rules first thing are the types of people we want posting. However, if somebody is the type who doesn\'t read the rules first thing, he\'s probably not going to be the type who will stop and read the rules. He\'ll see it as one of those \"legal agreement\" things with all his online games and just check everything without reading.

A Flash quiz. You are asked questions based on the rules and you have to get above a certain percentage to be allowed to view the site.

What an amount of bandwith that will take...
If it were a simple one, let a member make such one Flash quiz. It would help a good lot and it would be fun as well.

That truly is a really good Idea.

The only problem is that some of the rules are so ambiguous that it is a matter of oppinion and judgement about whether something breaks the rules or not, thus it would be hard to test someone on it. For example, it someone bumps up an old thread to state their own oppinion as the only other option would be to create an identical thread; or for someone to double post to state their oppinions in a thread that not many people seem to reply to, both posts having a day or more between them. Both are technically legal, but you\'d be surprised how many members then go on to criticise them and request a thread lock.

Well let them learn that over time just scare em a lot at the beginning and let them realize the rules can be bent a bit.

It\'s not really the rules being bent, rather the rules contradicting eachother.

This has to be said:

Some places on this site such as :rules, main site and hacking aren\'t used much. A lot of the topics on the first page haven\'t been used in almost two years. Now when people bmp these topics on accident they get killed by some n00b hunter. I have a policy, anything on the first page post on it. Anything on the second page check the dates and don\'t use the third page. I am asking that you do not go to hard on people that bump these things!

this is a good example of what to bump and when it is apropriate. http://www.interordi.com/mboard/viewthread.php?tid=2152

I prefer noob hunters.
Or someone (preferably me :P) who goes around, finds noob who break rules, and refers them to the Doc or Sir Breaker. They then PM them and set them straight. Although if you pick me, you\'d have to have two people doing it because of my binge vacation tendancy.

Perhaps if once a n00b starts spamming then doc assigns someone to them, they feel special when they are Pmed. Trust me that\'s how I felt. I think this would be better than instant banning. Poor Alpha the Beast, I mean the guy was ten!

Magiman, that won\'t work. Who has made you a dictator here? :o
In all honesty, I think \'n00b hunters\' are perhaps good as a last resort, but only as that. Nothing more. I think it might even be better that we have someone SPAM a bit now and then, to remind all others what should not be done. Though that is a very, very lame excuse for constant SPAM and breaking other rules.

That WOULD work, but there is one problem with that...People just might say \"Wow...rules\" and click the box without caring...like in Warcraft, you have to scroll all the way and then you can accept...i just scroll all the way down and click accept...and i never read the rules....xD
But, it might work, but i have a better idea.
Make new members go to a certain group, and after 5 posts, they get advanced to a normal member, and then you can check the admin history and see if they read or didnt, and see HOW LONG they read them, so you know they did read em...Thats what I do....sometimes....

1. Say the word PIG before each word.

pigs
about
talking
idiot
this
got
I
long
how
look

2.then say pig after each word.
3. Now say PIG before and after the words.

4. Finally, read the words starting from the bottom

Bumping is what you do when you post in a topic that\'s already quite old. Say, not on the first page of one of the board\'s forums anymore, but on the second, third, or beyond. Usually you ARE allowed to bump a topic, but ONLY when you have something useful to add. So no SPAM like \'yes\', \'me too\', \'lol\' or other short messages.

Aha, thank you Morph, i was quite confused on that one. So its ok as long as you actully add something useful and not some useless information. Got it. Thx.

I don\'t think bumping should be made a rule. It\'s pretty much usually \"appropiate.\" If they\'re \"SPAM\"ming, they\'re breaking other rules too; the \"SPAM\"ming rule. And therefore, they don\'t need to be told they are breaking a \"bumping\" rule. And don\'t say should. You have a SUGGESTION. There is no SHOULD that\'s up to Dr. Coassack.

I think (notice the use of think, then should, which makes it okay) that there should be a rule about double-posting, saying something along the lines of \"No double-posting, except in cases where it is obviously appropiate. If you cannot determine easily what is appropiate, which would be with very few exceptions, then do not double-post at all. If anyone has ever told you not to double-post, you probably should not do so.\" I didn\'t word that properly, but if they chose to use this rule they (well, he) could do it right.

I think people SHOULD post just to say \"This topic has been reported,\" or whatever, because then any GOOD member will not make 1,000 other reports.

I can create that quiz, using Dr. Cossack\'s e-mail address as the creator (or maybe a seperate e-amil address he creates just for this purpose if he doesn\'t have or like to use folders and filters), which is linked to on the register screen. A member can register, but cannot post until they\'ve taken the quiz (the new member won\'t be aware of this fact until after he\'s registered?). The results of the quiz, including each question, whether s/he got it right or wrong, and what answer s/he chose, will be e-mailed to Dr. Cossack. If Doc thinks s/he will be a useful and productive member (or a non-productive member that still follows the rules and posts somewhat properly), he can \"approve their registration\" and allow them their posting priviledges.

If you would like me to do this just "give me the signal.\" (As a note a PM or e-mail might be better in case this topic gets replied to and I don\'t notice for another year - 6 months.)

No, troll. Doc says himself, even in his sig, that you should keep your mouth shut and report the topic, meaning no \"ur gay too _reported_\" or \"I request this to be locked\" because guess what? You\'re spamming too when you do that, so you\'re spamming along with the topic creator.

See all those topics Break just locked without any posts? That was efficient. No trolling happened. No spam. No \"Mega X having a bad day\" or Sage hitting people. It was very clean.

I know it\'s hard for people to avoid yelling at trolls and spammers, hell I wouldn\'t be posting to anything you say if I had more self control, but I do believe things would go alot better if people didn\'t post anything when there\'s a spam or troll topic. They wouldn\'t make an ass of themselves or waste their time.

No, not Sage\'s nightstick and people yelling at people, well, if they\'re posting anyway why not \'long as it doesn\'t get too flamish. But what I am talking about is a simple \"This topic has been reported,\" so that others don\'t report it and flood Doc/Break/Necro\'s inbox. The sole purpose of the post is to avoid others from reporting it again.
