I know several of you are Myspace users, so this might hit at least a little close to home for some of ya.

AUSTIN, Texas - A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

Pete Solis was arrested in May on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He could not immediately be reached Monday evening.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."

"(MySpace) has got to take this seriously," said attorney Carl Barry, who is representing the girl and her mother. The suit seeks $30 million.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

"We take aggressive measures to protect our members," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world."

Why sue a company that is already trying it's best to protect it's users, but still doesn't want to keep them from open contact?

I say it's the girl's fault. She should have known better. If she wanted it to stop, she could've made it such that the man couldn't see her profile any more, or was blocked in another way.

Meh, I don't use myspace anyway. I rather tell people personally of what happened to me today. =/

The girl be at fault.
When you register, don't you have to be like 16 or whatever.
If she didn't abide by the terms of service and such, how can she sue. And if she wins. Sucks for like, 90% of America doesn't it?

Honestly, what a moron. If you have a blog that's fine, but honestly unless you've met the person in real life and you know it's him because maybe he did something smart like, give you a link to his blog so you would know for sure it's him because he gave it to you not on cyberspace. Honestly, unless you literally know the person in real life, or are 18 and up, don't give out this crap.

Also ,metool, you have to be 14 to get a myspace, unless like 25% of the people there you lie about your age.

Honestly, I don't see the freaking point of myspace. It just looks so damn...retarded. I hope she _does_ win so everyone can be done with all that nonsense.

Myspace is for friends. You can get one to keep in contact with friends that you may not see often and just to give someone a little message if you just wanna say something if you're not going to se them. Or if you just want a blog. o.o

Anyways, it is the girl's fault. Come on, how stupid could you possibly be? Not everyone on the web tells the truth and if you are going to fall for it, at that age, you deserve it. If she wins, that will piss me off. When you put your myspace on private, people can't message you unless they are a friend. So she could have put it on private, like mine is. Plus I lie about mostly everything that anyone (but friends) can see. XP

Well, some people really are itching to have romantic action in their lives.

Seriously, this is the kind of lawsuit that people refer to as a frivolous lawsuit. I so hope she loses.

And I dare her to sue for exactly US$15.92 and a court injunction to force MySpace to produce "MYSPACE SUCKS" t-shirts, just for the fun of it.

What kills me is that she trusted the guy because he claimed to be a senior football player. All the senior football players in my high school were dicks.

And, there is a link to a page of safety tips on EVERY MYSPACE PAGE. It's the end of personal responsibility as we know it! D=

Actually, there was some merit to their claim.. while it is typical that coffee be kept hot, the temperatures that McDonald's keeps their coffee at results in 3rd degree burns within 2-7 seconds. There should have been some kind of warning. BUT.. the woman had the coffee BETWEEN HER LEGS while someone else was driving! DUH!

I've had some kind of an arguement like this before. He was supposidly 19 and she was 14. Hello? Date people around your own age. I mean, the 19 year old could have sexualy assulted her as well. Heck, anyone could have sexually assulted her.

And there was another story how a guy offered to pick a girl up from school (they met on myspace) and she agreed to. She sued him for raping her when he took her to his house. Did mommy never tell this girl not to get in a car with strangers?

And what's worse is the parents are not really punishing their children for this.

But there is one thing here, underaged users for myspace are 13 and younger. She was not underaged and should have been smart enough not to trust this guy.

BTW, about the myspace thing. I'd give anybody my myspace but that doesn't mean I'll add them to my friend list. =P Plus they couldn't see anything.

XD I've been there before a few times. I don't eat at the McDonalds though. I go to Subway. :P

Hey, I think that was the McDonalds with the greasy fries. D:

EDIT: Don't blame me for getting off topic. Whenever I try to change it back someone else keeps it at McDonalds. D:

Also, the greasiest food is with Burger King. In all countries. With McDonalds, you can get a clean place.

EXCEPT IN OHIO.

C'mon now, I'm 15 and I got a myspace, I'm not dumb enough to give a complete stranger personal info. I hope she loses, then I hope everyone laughs at her.
I use myspace to keep in touch with my brother, who's all the way on the other side of the country. I also chat with my pals from school. There is not one person in my list that I do not know in real life.

"Ooohh, you are so fine...I want you..." *Starts rubbing the phone* "EEEKK!!! Stop it, your voice is hurting me!!"

....

>_>

Yep. That's probably what happened.
McDonalds has THE most salty fries I have ever fed to my face. I think they squeeze their meat out of a tube.

Above all else, I just think it's sad that people are given the idea today that no matter what they do, if it turns out badly, it's someone else's fault. If the girl was dumb enough to give him her personal information, how the heck is it the site's responsibility? It can't possibly stop someone from giving that away, or stop someone from lying about who they are. Yeah. A computer lie detector. That would be an interesting one. I think what I find most astounding is that the girl's mother is backing her. Um... hello? Rather than trying to cash in, shouldn't she be like, grounding her kid for being such a huge moron?

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said, as far as who is to blame goes.

What could stop MySpace from being sued is the safety notice, though.

http://collect.myspace.com/misc/safetytips.html?z=1

And what this teenager is proposing would involve MySpace checking every single account being signed up and vetting everyone who joins, which is tremendousely impractical, not to mention impossible.
