I'm looking for something specific, here.
Does anyone know if a software used to match players for online games exists? I'm looking for some sort of software, running on your computer, which allows you to enter a list of games that you are interested to play online. You also enter a list of friends that happen to share some of those games. If someone on your contact list who gets online also happens to be available for play, both persons would get an alert.
The big advantage is that it could quietly run in the background, alerting you only if someone's up for a game while you are working on something else. That saves you the trouble of bugging everyone if they want to focus on something else instead. Ideally, the thing would allow players to specify which games they want to play right now out of a customizable list. Also, it just doesn't work if it's tied to a limited set of games. If you enter the games yourself, it could work for web-based games (such as MegaChess), CD-required multiplayer matches (like in Age of Empires), or console ones (as for Tetris DS).
That software would most likely be somewhat similar to the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection when you set it to "Invite Friends": it reaches out to your contacts and invites them to join a title. The PC-based software would have the advantage of not requiring you to keep the game system running, as well as giving the opportunity to find players for any set game instead of a single title.
So... Is such a thing available anywhere? Or do you have any other suggestion?
