Gender Reassignment
EDIT: If you are uncomfortable posting your answers, just e-mail them to me at dearsilvy@aim.com. Thanks!

I’m doing this report thing for a class at school, and I really need everybody’s help. My chosen topic is Gender Reassignment, which is, the surgical procedure of changing a woman to a man, or a man to a woman; or, in some cases, actually assigning a gender to a person which has both female and male sex organs.
I’ve compiled a list of yes and no questions which I would like all of you to answer after a bit of thought. You can offer more of an explanation to your answer if you’d like, (I’d like that, actually.) but, I’m only allowed to calculate yes and no.
PLEASE, I beg of you, PLEASE be serious about this. I honestly need it.
I would really like it if people didn’t get into a huge argument over this, or post off topic.

Thanks.

Please state your age before your post, so I can put that into my results as well.

1. There is a condition in which a person feels as if they are a girl/boy trapped in a boy’s/girl’s body. This condition is often apparent from infancy straight into adulthood. Ex. A small boy loves to play with dolls, make-up, and wear his mother’s high heels. He calls himself a girl, and doesn’t understand why his parents say he isn’t. Ex2. A teenage girl acts very tomboyish and doesn’t care about make-up or pink or boys. She likes other girls sexually and knows that inside she is really a boy. She hates the fact that she has breasts, and tries desperately to hide them. She cuts her hair short and doesn’t shave her legs in order to look more like a boy.
A person with a condition like this, do you think, yes or no, that this child, teenager, or adult should be able to change his gender surgically because they believe that they were born in the wrong body?

2. If this person does undergo the procedure, should they be allowed to legally change their gender on their driver’s license or other such identification? Yes or no.

3. If there is a couple of same sex, and one undergoes the procedure and is now a woman/man, should their marriage be considered a straight marriage? Yes or no.

4. On a different note. There is a child born, and doctors do some tests on it. This child is born with a man’s genitals on the outside, but a woman’s on the inside. (Like, they have a penis, but also with ovaries.) Should the doctors label this person as a male because of outside physical appearance? Yes or no.

5. If this person has a uterus and ovaries and is able to bear a child if surgery is done, would they still be considered a man?

6. There is this individual. They have a penis, yet also female breasts. Is this person considered a man? Yes or no.

Okay, thank you everyone in advance. That’s all there is. I hope I was detailed enough with the questions. I’ve been sick and unable to get all of this done. X_x It’s due tomorrow. Please spread it around as much as you can. I’d really appreciate it.

I've run a few school surveys through this site, and got a lot of great answers from the visitors. I think it's only fair that I contribute back to this one.

As a start, I'm 24.

1- I'm not sure about that one. It sounds a bit easy to switch around "just because". I'd try to find a more biological explanation before simply relying on people's requests. Fill me as a "no" here.

2- Definitely yes. *If* it's done, then do it the whole way instead of going with the status quo. That would save the person from a lot of potentially embarassing explanations... "You can't borrow this book ma'am, this is your husband's card."

3- That one is directly linked to number 2. The status of the marriage should follow the "official gender" of the person. If the two are officially male, even if one made the switch... It's still a same-sex marriage. Things have to stay consistent.

4- No. The analysis should be based on hormonal balance to determine which gender is the most proeminent one in order to follow it.

5- Obviously no. Do you really want to hear about a man giving birth, silly movies aside?

6- See my answer to #4.

Of course.

2. If this person does undergo the procedure, should they be allowed to legally change their gender on their driver’s license or other such identification? Yes or no.
Yes.

3. If there is a couple of same sex, and one undergoes the procedure and is now a woman/man, should their marriage be considered a straight marriage? Yes or no.
If they change thier gender they can get married as a straight couple. If gay marriage has been legalized by the time this happens, it doesn't matter. If they are already married, and then one undergoes and operation, they should be able to stay married. If they have changed their gender ebfore becoming a couple, then it should be considered a gay amrriage. Also, it dpends on how far they change their gender.

4. On a different note. There is a child born, and doctors do some tests on it. This child is born with a man’s genitals on the outside, but a woman’s on the inside. (Like, they have a penis, but also with ovaries.) Should the doctors label this person as a male because of outside physical appearance? Yes or no.
This child is considered a hermaphrodite. Where it asks for sex, put "other." If the child chooses later on in life that they want to be considered a male, that is fine, but they should not be able to be considered a female without more surgery - it's either male or "other."

5. If this person has a uterus and ovaries and is able to bear a child if surgery is done, would they still be considered a man?
Yes. If it requires surgery to have a baby, then they can not cuurently have a baby, so the issue of whether or not they can have a baby is not an issue 'cause they can't (if they have surgery, then they will be funlly female anyway). Or did you mean with a C-section? If that's the case, then they are again considered "other."

6. There is this individual. They have a penis, yet also female breasts. Is this person considered a man? Yes or no.
No, they are a hermaphrodite.

17 in July, 16 fo' now!

1. I don't know.

2. Yes, but there should be mention of the original gender too. What if, after all, as a man you had been a criminal? Then the police would have a harder time finding you, since you wouldn't match the description.

3. Well, I suppose it could be. Or we could invent an entirely new term for it.

4. Flip for it. That or let the parents make a decision. Or leave it as is for the child to make a decision later in life (after years of ridicule)

5. I suppose it depends on whether the surgery is in the future or the past.

6. They should stop using steroids. :P

I'm 16 :)

1. Meh, who am I to say she can't? (yes)
2. Yes: if they are now male, then that has to mean something
3. If male-male becomes male-female, then it's now straight, yes, even if it wasn't before. This should be legal, although if the church doesn't recognise it, I don't think the church should be force.
4. No, their birth citificate should be marked "i" for intersex.
5. No, once again, they should be intersex.
6. Again, they aren't one gender or the other.

Doesn't work. Look up the case of Brenda. I don't know, google it. He had his penis destroyed during circumcision. He ended up killing himself. Unsuccessful enough for me...
