Yeah, I'll admit it. This is the third incarnation of Mega Man that I now own (fourth if you count Powered Up). I wanted to post this so if anyone is curious about downloading it, I'll give you the low down, and compare it to other versions.

Graphics:

Very sharp, but less colorful. You made need to adjust the picture settings on your TV before you can get the best look for it. All of the sprites look very clean and crisp and don't have that blurry look that previous more colorful versions of the game possess.

Sound:

Very nice. All of the sounds and music come in very clear. The quality is outstanding, when compared to the use of the RF switch most might remember from the NES days.There are no remixed tracks, unfortunately.

Gameplay:

Still the same. Which is a good thing. No new features or anything, so don't be expecting any. In terms of controls, you can use the Wii Remote sideways, Classic controller and Gamecube controller. The buttons are as folllows:

Sideways Remote:
2 = Jump
1 = Shoot/Fire Special Weapons
+ = Start/Weapon screen/Confirm
- = Select/Pause
D-Pad = Move/Select Special Weapons/Choose Stage
A = Not used
B = Not used

Classic Controller:

D-Pad = Move/Select Special Weapon/Choose stage
- = Select/Pause
+ = Start/Special Weapons Screen/Confirm
Y = Shoot
B = Shoot
X = Jump
A = Jump
L = Not used
R = Not used
ZL = Not used
ZR = Not used
Left Analog = Move/Select Weapon(on menu screen)/Choose stage
Right Analog = Not used

Gamecube Controller:

Control Stick = Move/Select Weapon(on menu screen)/Choose stage
D-pad = Move/Select Weapon(on menu screen)/Choose stage
C-Stick = Not used
B = Shoot
A = Jump
Y = Shoot
X = Jump
L = Not used
R = Not used
Z = Select/Pause

Using the Wii Remote Sideways is how I've been playing it the most. Having "Start" and "Select" above and below one another is awkward when compared to having them side by side, especially when trying to pull of the Pause/Resume trick. (Yes, it's still here. Basically...) Good if you want to play wireless.

The Classic Controller is probably the worst method for playing this game. If you've played the SNES Mega Man games, or even the Gameboy ones using the Super Gameboy, you'll be especially disappointed in these controls. What's worst is that you can't optimize them to your liking, so if you we're expecting to be able to play Mega Man for the VC with the same controller scheme as the SNES, you're sunk.

Gamecube controller:

To be honest, this is a fairly good method to play with. B is shoot and A is jump, which I'm sure comes as a breath of fresh air for anyone who has played the Anniversary Collection on the Gamecube, in which shoot and jump are swapped. Use this controller method if you're out of batteries, or you just want to stick it to the Gamecube version of AC.

Special notes:

This version actually does have a save feature. Your game will be saved, even when you turn the system off. If you want to start a new game, press Home and choose Reset. As with the original, after you've completed the game, it will take you back to the Stage Select Screen, with all bosses defeated (but still able to re-fight them), all Special Weapon accumulated and Wily's stages available when you start again. The game will save your "cleared" data for the next time you play. In addition, the thing that stands out the most from this version, is that your score and accumulated lives will also be saved! This is pretty much the only feature that outweighs all the others.

All in all, I can't say this game is totally recommendable if you already own either the original or the AC version, or both. There's no Auto-fire button (a feature which I loved in the AC versions or hell, even with the NES and a Turbo controller), and you can't switch weapons on screen even with all those extra buttons, if you decide to use a different kind of controller. I know, people like to have that original, simple "feel", by having less buttons on their controller to press, but still. It would be nice if there was something more offered for the people that already own this game. If you don't own this game, then keep in mind, there's not much else more you can get for $5.00, unless there's another game you're eye-balling or you're saving your points up for Mega Man 9.

Plus:
Saves your score and lives!

Minus:
...that's about it.

Any questions? Things you'd like to point out? Go ahead and comment.

BTW, I have no idea how the Complete Works version stands out compared to the others. If there's something I should make note of, please let me know.

Is the select glitch in tact? ;)

I ask out of curiosity since the Anniversary Collection removed that glitch.

With that said, that's a pretty detailed review. It sounds like this game received the usual Virtual Console treatment, including the "save state" process used to save your game when you play. That's especially handy with Mega Man 1 and it's lack of passwords! The Complete Works version allows you to save too, but it works as if the game supported passwords: as such, it remembers which bosses have been defeated and if you got the Magnet Beam, but it won't remember your score.

I think I'll pass on purchasing this one since I already have the full set of Rockman Complete Works, but I might get of the later game versions for the heck of it. It's good to see that Capcom finally decided to release these: the Mega Man series was pretty much the only big, classic series not represented yet on the VC.

I downloaded it mainly for sentimental value. Thought I would support Mega Man and any chance of a Classic Series being revived. I hope they go up to at least 3 for the VC. I think I'd get them all up to there, but would stop at 4, because I personally like the AC versions of 4, 5, and 6 better than the originals, believe it or not. You can actually switch between Rush Adapters and other tools with the use the L2 and R2 buttons (on the PS2) on screen, but you couldn't in 1, 2, and 3 for some strange reason, yet you could still switch between weapons with the shoulder buttons.

I hope that 2 isn't the Japanese version in which the overall damage data on bosses has been suppressed. The AC version also suffered from this, even on easy mode. *sigh*...

And I doubt 3 will retain all of the Controller-2 tricks from the Original. (Also removed in the AC versions.) But if I'm going to support Mega Man, I'll at least download the 3 most popular games in the NES series.
