I've done my share of obscure riddles too, it doesn't mean that they aren't good. 
I figured that this wasn't specific to a given series based on the guesses so far, it's probably some gameplay element or something similar. I liked the "1-up" guess, but it isn't the answer... What about Energy Tanks (or Sub Tanks), then?

Not those either. Obscure is good, but depending on how obscure you are, some people will never be able to guess it, and where's the fun in that?
