Episodic content is a bit iffy but that gameplay looks tried and true.
Can't wait.

Episodic Content gives me a lot of doubts (usually, you do episodic stuff to tell a story or to steal take more money from gamers), but the graphics and gameplay style looks spot on.
We've said this many times before, but perhaps, just perhaps, this is it. A console Sonic game where the developers don't feel the urge to add odd gameplay mechanics just to make the game look "fresh". This could be fun! I've played all of the 2D Sonic games that I know of, including the entire Game Gear collection, and I could do with a new entry.
I'm glad that they're going with modern-day graphics in the old style, too. The Sonic series isn't as stuck on it's old look as the original Mega Man series, so there's no need to pull a 16-bits looking game. Look at New Super Mario Bros: new graphics in the classic style, and it works very well.

Bitchin'.
I'm all for the idea of classic video game icons that star in side scrollers shifting to a 2.5 style look. It's a much needed refreshment, while keeping it's appeal.
Why won't Mega Man do this?
They did. See: Mega Man X8.
I like the 2.5D look very much myself. It worked well for X8, or Kirby 64, or usualy any game where they manage to show the perspective properly.

I was sorta hoping for hand-drawn sprites like Warioland or Omniusha, that would have been fantastic. But it's current look definately isn't bad.
Also Doc, about the classic look...they actually did revert him somewhat. His eyes have a bit less green to them and his legs are considerably shorter.
The episodic thing is also a bit weird, normally it is a way to act as a cash cow, but at the same time....well, it's Sonic 4. This fact alone means Sega is trying their best to make this as close to the originals as they can possibly make it. I'm expecting quality.

In the last so many years, several series have gone back to their roots. Mario with the New Super Mario Bros., Megaman, now Sonic. It's great to see developers going back to styles that worked instead of trying to force characters into new styles to fit the new technology. Though in Mario's case, that didn't really hurt.
I'm a little bit disappointed by the graphics though. When I first read about this earlier this week I didn't read anything more than the name. I kinda hoped it would use the old graphics like Megaman 9 did.

I've saw one person on dA, a person I have watched for his video game character art, rage about Sonic 4. Why? Something about not using the old character design of Sonic, but what set him off was how they're giving Sonic the Homing Attack in this game. Oh, how he raged, saying how DARE they (Sega) call this Sonic the Hedgehog 4!
*facepalms*
I swear, people will whine about anything. This is the knd of nitpicking that drives companies to not release anything in fear of pissing off touchy people.
Seriously, each Sonic game in the original run added something new: Sonic 1 was the first, of course; Sonic CD added the on-foot speedup; Sonic 2 added Tails as a playable character; Sonic 3 added the various shield moves. Sonic 4 adding the homing attack is perfectly in the continuity of things.
If you want to get Sonic 1 all over again, then just go play Sonic 1 instead of looking for a sequel!! I, for one, want to have some new elements to look forward to instead of a simple 15 years old rehearse.

Leaked gameplay footage of the new Splash Hill Zone. Also other stage names are revealed on what seems like a non-final stage select screen called Lost Labyrinth Zone, Casino Street Zone and Mad Gear Zone. There's also a Special Stage.
Looks nice, but gameplay looks kind of slow, wouldn't you say? Oh well. That's 3-d graphics for you. I'm still looking forward to this.
Ahh, so Dimps is the group behind this. Great news! They've got a lot of experience with those 2D-like games already, and I'm hopeful that they'll be able to do a good job. That tidbit of news is more important than the leaked gameplay footage, I'd say.
It does look a bit slow when Sonic starts running, but he picks up speed very quickly. This somewhat reminds me of the Master System / Game Gear games, which had a slower pace at first but weren't any less fun.

I was more thinking in the lines of Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble. I haven't played quite enough of Sonic 2 (GG) yet, maybe I'll give it a serious shot soon!

Good luck getting past the damn first boss then. I still haven't managed that yet.
Actually, looking at the video again more closely (I was more fixated on rushing to post it here), it actually looks a lot faster than I thought.
At first glace, which was fairly brief, he just seemed slow to me, so I first thought the inclusion of a Super/Hyper Sonic would change that.
I still feel the sprite-styled games look faster.
Maybe it's just because of the extra frames of animation that make it look slower in this next game. Merely an optical illusion, I think.

... you got past that pincer-bug thing of a boss in the first Zone?
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF--
Lots o' leaked footage
Looks incredible. That homing attack is actually looking quite handy. It keeps the speed going, and makes destroying enemies more simple. Having to manually attack foes by jumping on them was getting kind of stale, since that's mainly Sonic's main attack (besides the Spin Dash).
The reviews are coming in, and they're looking good too!
The Wii version is being released on Monday. Isn't it just a shame that Monday also happens to be a holiday in Canada? I know where part of my free day is going, now!

meh, the only Sonic I really liked was 1 for the SMS. I'm not that excited *gets blasted for saying that*
You know, I've got a bit of trouble with the fact that no one commented about the game since it's release. I held back to give someone else the chance to go first, but it looks like I'll have to step in.
I downloaded the game the day it was released, and beat it in one sitting. Four worlds and a final area go through fast, but I've yet to get all the Chaos Emeralds. This is a fun game, with multi-layered levels very reminiscent of the Sega Genesis days that want to try them. I found it pretty easy overall (except for the final area), and at one point I had about 30 extra lives stacked up. Generous much?
Now, one thing that surprised me is how much this feels stuck between the sequel and remake territories. I knew they were bound to bring back several level elements and enemies from the first games, but I didn't think they'd reuse so much content. I've said it before for other games like Mega Man 9, and I'll say it again: there's a fine line between nostalgia and too much reuse, and the game creators have to be careful about that. Sonic 4 doesn't feel like a complete rehash, though: the levels are (mostly) new, the gameplay is different (the homing attack feels at home), and the music is original (excluding some jingles).
With that said, bring on Episode 2! The structure is solid, now I'm just looking to see some more new elements.

So, hum, Episode 2. Anybody heard any news on that?
I was under the impression that they'd release a new Episode every 2-3 months, but it looks like the releases will be spaced out. I don't really mind myself, but by the time we reach an eventual Episode 4 or 5, won't the original part look pretty old by comparison?
