Bosses. They're one of the most enjoyable things about games, in my opinion. Hard bosses test me. Easy bosses are good for a laugh. I do enjoy revisiting old bosses with different strategies to for a good challenge. I managed to beat a few bosses using the Extreme Ring in KH 358/2.But then...there exists bosses that just. pisses. you. off. The ones that I can't stand fighting again. I dread the moment when I revisit the games and get to that point. Here they are. Not in order. The first five.

Algol (SCIV)
------------------------------------------------------------
Depends on the fighter, equipment, and mode. Sometimes, I just wipe the floor with his face. The other times? He uses my ass as a mop. Guard spam. Ranged attacks. Fast multi-hit attacks that come at the time where you can't guard fast enough. Then again, final bosses should be hard. But not cheap!

Spike (Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon)
------------------------------------------------------------
If the Spyro games are my childhood dreams, then Spike is my childhood NIGHTMARE. He's a variation of the Gulp fight in the last game. They try to squash you. They fire shots at you. You have to charge, flame and use projectiles to hurt them. They fire more shots as they lose health. They start to use your weapons against you.

But Spike is far worse. He moves faster. There is no delay when he uses his gun, so continue to charge the entire time to stay alive. He starts to predict your moves and destroys the explosive rocks you need and hit you. I'm good at these games, but this guy takes more lives than I used in my first time though any of the games. The cutscene before him is called "Spike is Born." And he's created by the main bad girl. This is just plain evil.

Mysterio (Spiderman: Mysterio's Menance)
------------------------------------------------------------
A GBA game you probably never heard of. Good. This game is HARD. Let me explain. There are three difficulties. Easy. 5 lives, full web meter, and enemies generally taken down in one combo. Medium. 3 lives, two web meters, and enemies are twice as hard. Super-Hero. 1 life, one web meter, and enemies can kill you faster than you can.

Mysterio is the final boss, of course. Here is the rundown.

1. Slowly chases you around the room with a fireball shield. He throws it at you after a second, leaving him open. However, if you're hit, he goes back and does it again. Don't get hit to hurt him.

2. Traps you on the floor with four clones, all with fire shields. You have to get the real Mysterio. The clones can be killed with the web snare. However, you first have to wait for the shields to be gone. He throws them at you with little room. Move fast, dodge the fire, and get the Mysterio/clone before the shield comes up. The clones vanish when you get the real one.

3. Becomes the other bosses. Not as bad, but annoying.

4. Stomps. It's not that strong, even under the fist. Stay in the air.

I brute-forced my way to him. And then lost, and had to go through the House of Hell again. God!

Wilfre (Drawn to Life)
------------------------------------------------------------
The Angler King? I got used to him. Wilfre? A long battle with unpredictable attacks. To start, you have to trawl your way through a long and brutish stage. Then, fight a scorpion. A bit easy, but does have moments of you can't predict. You're given health right before Wilfre.

He has two attacks. He uses the stars you made to randomly shower on you. He throws the tridents you also made. He throws them both in the way: one at you, and two in random direction, to screw you into running into them. He moves in-between two fixed points, left and right.

You can only hit him when he's moving. And he moves FAST. Getting a single hit in is a task. And when you hit the half-way mark, he goes FASTER. And he longer has the fixed points. He choses when to attack when he feels like it. Hoped you got all of the specials and learned the uppercut, IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO REALLY HURT HIM. King Angler had a pattern. Wilfre plays with you.

Ben/Jinpachiro Hyuga (Shadow Hearts, SH Covenant)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daddy will lay the smack down on you. For starters, you have to get all of the fusions, meaning you have to explore the entire world to find everything needed. Second, train Yuri to a good high level and give him the best equipment you can find. THIS IS A SOLO FIGHT. BRING A SALVO OF ITEMS. Enter the Graveyard and find him.

The first game is a two-parter. You fight him in his human form, and then goes Seraphic Radiance, the most powerful fusion in the game's mythos. It becomes a insane HELL. In the second game, he starts out in S.R.

S.R. has three moves. A powerful normal attack. A attack that steals health and gives him health back. He can raise all of his stats. Did I mention you this a solo fight? You get a turn, and then he gets a turn. MAKE GOOD MOVES.

Beating him without keys is something that a challenge player would do. Beat this guy, and you win the most powerful fusion in the game!

And I'm done for now. What do you got?

Yes, THAT Hardman. This is the new and improved one.

WILFRE!?!?!?!?!?

lol, he wasn't that hard for me...

Anyway,

1-Boost Guardian, Metroid Prime 2

As the only boss harder than the final boss, this guy is a nightmare.

Attacks-

1- Not really an attack, but in the arena you are in, you lose 1-3 hp per second

2- Roll- Takes about 50-100 hp off

3.Dispenses minions. You can kill for health.

And that's about all I remember, besides that this guy took several multi-hour-runs to finally defeat.

#2- Fire Field, F-Zero

Attacks-

Blocker Cars- takes you down about 3-5 ranks if it hits

Explosive Cars- Take life off, knock you down 1-2 ranks if they hit.

Crazy turns- Destroys car or puts you in last place if it hits.

#3-Dullahan, Golden Sun: The Lost Age

This guy is just plain unfair...

He would be at #1, but there is a cheap way to beat him

I've NEVER had a problem with pokemon before, even Whitney wasn't much of a threat.

THIS GUY though, THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. He was an amazing boss, and he managed to totally sweep me twice in a row. Naturally there are stronger fights after the main storyline, but I'm talking completely required bosses. Beforehand, your team is forced to be altered, and his team recognizes this and sets up a counter. It's a 5v6 right from the start, basically. On top of that, the rest of his pokemon are insanely overleveled and have a good number of resistances.

Also, his battle theme is the first one in the series to have a chorus sing along to it. Just a fun fact.

I can think of a few...

Image

Ultimate Nine-Ball (Armored Core: Master of Arena, Armored Core 2)

Final form of the main antagonist in Armored Core: Master of Arena and damn near impossible to beat without cheating. He has all of the cheat upgrades you can get, plus more. Infinite energy, flight mode, TWIN laser blades, which won't appear for player use until the next game, PLUS the game-breaker Moonlight laser blade wave projectile... yeah this fight's an utter pain in the ass. And it's only marginally easier in the bonus fight in the next game.

Image

The Harvester (Dragon Age: Origins - The Golems of Amgarrak)

The final boss for the short expansion for Dragon Age: Origins, The Golems of Amgarrak, the Harvester is guaranteed to be a difficult fight on Normal mode. But if you want a bonus item for future playthroughs in the main game and main expansion, you have to fight him on Hard Mode. At which point he becomes the hardest boss fight in the series to date, switching from modes where only physical attacks work and where only magical attacks work... and he has the ability to summon a small legion of boss-level undead enemies, which the game-breaker Blood Wound spell doesn't work on.

Then after you kill him, you fight him again where he's faster and harder to hit, and he still summons boss-level mooks. Good fuckin' luck. And he's in Dragon Age 2! BioWare hates the players, apparently.

Image

Mizar (Jet Force Gemini)

Mizar. Just... Mizar. You'll fight him once halfway through the game and he's not difficult there, so you're only setting yourself up for failure when you fight him again, in which he has a weak-point only on his back (Gameplay mechanics dictate you fight face-to-face), and has an attack that sweeps over your boss fight platform that rapidly drains your health. And the real kicker?

The programmers forgot to program a pattern into him. Enjoy having his ultimate attack spammed seven to eight times in a row... if you're lucky.

Image

Green Eye (Lost Planet)

Ah, Green Eye. A cheap bastard notable among cheap bastards, and unlike the last three I mentioned, he's not even a final boss! Has a slew of weak points you have to hit lest you not damage him at all, and is programmed to be able to hit you regardless of where you're at--I have experienced him launching projectiles through walls, breaking the physics engine in the process. And he can run you over backwards. And the best part? Even on easy mode, if you get hit just once, there's a big chance where you won't be able to MOVE until his attacks finish, at which point you are beyond dead.

Image

DBS-000XM Billion Sword (Lost Planet)

But that's not all! Not to be outdone, Lost Planet needs a final boss even worse than Green Eye! The Billion Sword VS fits that role just fine. Made somewhat more difficult due to a sudden gameplay change, the Billion Sword also employs cheap tactics by easily dodging the only two attacks that can hurt it (which have long wind-up times and NEED to be in melee range, the added projectiles the attacks fire be damned) and summoning a pair of cannons that will wipe out half your health in a single strike--and these cannons have two versions, one with an up-and-down sweeping motion, and another that shoots horizontally five friggin' ways.

Oh, and when you get it's health down to a certain point, the music changes. At this point, getting near the Billion Sword will instantly kill you regardless of how much life you have. Did I mention that you need to be in melee range to hurt it at all? Yeah. Fuck you, Dr. Isenberg. Fuck you.

Image

Boost Guardian (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)

Ah, another difficult boss that isn't even the final boss. If you're any decent at platformers, then chances are, the only hard part you've come across in Metroid Prime 2 is the first major boss, the Amorbis. You've got the Dark Suit, which reduces the amount of damage you take when exposed to Dark Aether's atmosphere, and you've got both the Light Beam and Dark Beam. So now, the Boost Guardian's purpose is to bitchslap you right in your smug face.

The Boost Guardian is a pain in the ass to hit, does high damage and the best part is unlike every other boss fight you've had on Dark Aether, there's no safe zone! Which means you are constantly taking damage throughout the entire fight and your only chance at healing is the shit-ton of power-ups he drops when you kill him. Which won't be happening any time soon.

Image

Spider Guardian (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)

But that's not the only pain in the ass in Prime 2, oh no. It also has the Spider Guardian. Which is a tiny little shit that acts as a puzzle boss done entirely in Morph Ball form--that's right, you can't even hurt the bastard directly! You've got to have it run into exposed power cells to electrocute the bitch. Which require altering its course through timed switches over three friggin' screens. It's almost not even worth it, but required to face off against.

Image

Mutated Emperor Ing (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)

And Prime 3 is on a roll with ANOTHER pain in the ass boss fight! And this one will drive you up the fucking wall. The first two phases of the battle against this supposed final boss aren't too difficult if you play your cards right, but this fight is straight-up luck-based at times. He has a difficult-to-hit weak spot that you have to blast apart once just to make him vulnerable to damage, and then again with the Light Beam or Dark Beam to actually hurt him.

And his A.I. dictates he be a total douche, because chances are, the moment you get an opening to do damage with the Sonic Boom (if you were smart enough to get it, if not, good fucking luck beating him), he tends to close his mouth and chew on his weakpoint so you can't hurt him at all, and half the time when he does this, he resets the shielding on it so you have to blast it open again to make him vulnerable again.

He's also twice the size of your ship and moves about as fast as Meta-Ridley in the previous game. He's all over the fucking place. Oh, and the corners of the map have Phazon! And unlike the first and last game in the trilogy, you have no way of protecting yourself against Phazon. GG, Nintendo. G-fucking-G.

Nice essay, RD. :)

Oddly enough, I can't remember having a specific problem with the Boost Guardian. Everything that you said is true, and I did die a few times, but it was nothing that felt out of place with the boss sequence in the game. Chyyka made a much more lasting impression on me...

Chyyka was hard, I'll admit. A real pain in the ass. But you know what? Chyyka was a major boss, everyone knew it was going to be a tough and taxing fight.

Boost Guardian? Not so much, which makes it more frustrating as a boss.
