Deus Ex: Human Revolutions is the third games in a series, notable because of how amazing the first one was. There was another sequel,
Invisible War, which was a good game but not up the standards set by the original.
What is
Deus Ex, though? In brief: it is a cyberpunk-themed action role-playing game developed by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000, which combines gameplay elements of first-person shooters with those of role-playing video games. The game received near-universal critical and industry acclaim,
including being named "Best PC Game of All Time" in PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games and in a
carried out by UK gaming magazine PC Zone. It was a
frequent candidate for and
winner of Game of the Year
awards, drawing praise for its pioneering designs in player choice and multiple narrative paths.
Basically, it takes place around 2050 or so, after civilization has basically collapsed. There's a worldwide plague going on and though there's a cure, there's not enough of it. So the cure is going to those deemed "vital" to society, which many people are unhappy out. Needless to say, some people turn to terrorism (Statue of Liberty? More like Statue of Li
bombty, amirite?). In response, the United Nations has increased its power to fight terrorism. Of course, every major player is being backed by
someone who thinks they know best for the world, and basically every conspiracy is running up against each other.
Transhumanism is a bit of a theme, though arguably not to the extent of the other games. The main character, JC Denton is the second human to have undergone nano-augmentations, a new piece of tech that not only outperforms, but leaves almost no disfiguration compared to the mechanical augmentation that others have gone under. You can bet this earns friends. Anyway, JC works for UNATCO, the organization tasked with fighting terrorists. Which is all well and good until it isn't.
Anyway, part of the fun is that this game was all WAR ON TERROR (but who's the real terrorists?)
long before the actual war on terror happened.
