The Wii U's release is 66 days ahead, on November 18th, at least in the US. I've listened to Nintendo's presentation today (audio only), and we now know all the main information: the date, the prices, the two different models, the main features, and the games expected to be available in the release window (before the end of March 2013).

Now, the problem: I'm utterly not excited. For the first new hardware generation since the GameBoy Advance, I'm considering staying home on launch day, thus looking at purchasing the console only later on. I've got the money, I still like Nintendo the most out of the other hardware markers, but there's not a single game in the launch window line-up that I consider a must-own. I've also got plenty of unplayed titles to keep me busy for a while. It's not like I'm losing interest in gaming.

Eventually, we will probably see the release of some great games that'll make the console worth having. Something on the scale of Super Mario Galaxy would do the trick, or a new Star Fox (if it's not for the 3DS!), or something else making clever use of the hardware. Of course, in due time will come Smash 4. Those titles often take a year at least to show up on a new system. As such, why would I get the console sooner? I'm not sure.

Now, it's your turn. Convince me to buy a Wii U.

Weird, I got the exact opposite reaction. Third party support is HUGE (Nintendo publishing Bayonetta 2? Are you KIDDING ME?) plus the launch window lineup looks like one of the strongest I've seen for any console with things like Pikmin 3, Epic Mickey 2, Monster Hunter, etc already confirmed.

I know it's against the point of the thread, but... Unless you think it's going to be sold out for months or you're thinking of avoiding firmware updates for some reason, I don't see the harm in waiting to buy until the software that you want to experience is around too. I mean, it's a shame to break your first day streak or whatever, but hey at least keeping that money in the bank will earn you a little interest until then. Use it to treat yourself to a coffee or something on your awaited day of purchase.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I was curious as to if anyone ended up getting the WiiU. I thought about getting it, but past experiences with the Wii convinced me to hold off for a bit.

My main reasons for holding off wasn't because of their shift towards a different method of playing, but simply the lack of decent games. I loved how the Wii remote works, but unfortunately the only games I could enjoy were the ones best played with a group of people (which doesn't happen around here often, if at all :P ). While trying to provide different technology is great, it doesn't help if game developers don't make good use of it enough or are afraid to even try making use of it. It probably didn't help that the graphics output wasn't very good either.

Are there any game series for the WiiU that people have enjoyed so far?

On my end, I'm still waiting. The launch window has come and gone, and as I expected, none of the games released or announced up to this point are enough to convince me. Even if Nintendo is changing the format of their E3 announcements this year, that's when I expect some interesting news to show up. Will those be enough? I can't say yet!

The controller type isn't an issue for me, as I found enough singleplayer games worth playing. I'll easily agree that many others are definitely more suited to playing with a small group, and that's not always easy to do when you're no longer a teen with nothing better to do!

I just recently got the Wii, so, the whole Wii U thing is...not possible for me. I'll get it when it's dead and gone. :P

No Wii U games I seriously want anyway.

Bumpity bump.

With Smash 4 coming sometime next winter, I've started keeping an eye out for possible Wii U deals. At the same time, I've been really itching to play some Mario Kart lately... The Wii version has been a bit of a disappointment to me, mostly because so many people told me they'd play with me but dropped off within two weeks. Maybe it'll be better this time around, maybe not; but the game itself looks like it has some fun additions.

Entering: the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle.

This new set, slightly more expensive than the Wii U Deluxe set, comes with the console, the game, a racing wheel and Wii Remove Plus. Additionally, all purchases of Mario Kart 8 (including this bundled one), come with a free game chosen from the following:

  • New Super Mario Bros. U
  • Pikmin 3
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • Wii Party U

Maybe, if I'm lucky, I can combine this with an in-store deal (as I did with my PS3, oh oh) and get one heck of a package for a decent price. I don't think that a console price drop is too likely until the end of the year, so this might be my best shot at this.

I'll definitely be getting it on release and playing for a free copy of Pikmin! And we can definitely play together, I'll take any excuse to actually use my Wii U at the moment...

Two years later, at long last, I've made my move: I have a Wii U coming my way!

I had been actively looking for a deal with Smash 4 being right around the corner, and I lucked out by finding a time-limited promo that I jumped on. I'm getting the console + Super Mario 3D World + Nintendo Land bundle for $CAD 270 (~$USD 240). Since that was an online order, I'll receive it within the coming days...

I already own (but haven't played, obviously) Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 and Pikmin 3. Add to that the two bundled games and Smash 4, and I'll be busy gaming during the holidays!
