Discuss.

Disney/Marvel partnership did a pretty good job with the Avengers series of films recently. Disney did an amazing job with Pirates of the Caribbean a few years ago, and George Lucas has said that he is passing the Star Wars torch to a new generation of film makers. I'm going to reserve judgement and decide what I think after I see it, but I don't see it as anything like an immediate write off as some seem to.

At first I was like NOOOOOOOOO!!!! But now that I think of it... Lucas did a pretty good job of half murdering the franchise himself with the last hit and miss trilogy, and as terrifying as Disney is as a corporation, they know how to make money. I support this. This is either going to be amazing or terrible.

"They know how to make money" is not that big an endorsement, tbh. Mitt Romney knows how to make money by asset stripping businesses, that does not make him a good CEO :P

That didn't take long to get politics into it.

Let's keep in mind that Disney also owns Marvel and The Avengers still did really well and was well-received. And hell Disney already had Indiana Jones. I don't think what happens with this new episode will be terrible.

But then again I actually LIKED the prequel trilogy.

Disney does a lot of that Romneyesque bull as well, just not in their main court. The point I was trying to make was, in the realm of making movies, Disney gets shit done, and get it done well. They know what they're doing, and we can rest assured that - worst case scenario - the failure will be spectacular, but more than likely the outcome will be incredible.

I needed a terrible businessman for an analogy and he was the first that came to mind. Blame the News :P

I thought the prequels got better as they went on. Phantom Menace I found boring. There's the massive race on Tatooine that literally serves no plot purpose, it's just an action sequence for its own sake. Most of the film exists to show how politics is set out in the Old Republic, what role the Jedi serve and to lay the scene for the next two. Attack Of The Clones, I thought, was an alright film. If it hadn't been a Star Wars film it would have been generally quite good. But it was a Star Wars film and next to the original three it just comparatively mediocre. And Episode III I liked quite a lot.

And the thing about the Avengers (and the other 5 films that share direct canon) is that it's a good film. Crap films can be well received, brilliant films can become cult classics or fade into obscurity. The Avengers was a really good, compelling film.

Agreed on all accounts. I catched Episode III on the air not that long ago, and it's fun to watch. If further sequels can continue the trend, then I'll be satisfied.

Let's keep in mind that the marvel movies where in production before the Disney buy out. That goes with the Avengers as well. However that mickey money did help quite a bit.
I for one am looking forward to it. As a advid comic book reader I can tell you that for the most part Disney keeps it's hands away from the pot,and goes to it when it needs to. That being said there are some odd crossovers here in there between the TV shows but that's about it.
As far as the big god GL himself stepping back a bit I have to say, isn't this what alot of fan boys wanted? For other people to play in the large sandbox that is star wars?
In recent news they got the guy who wrote Toy story 3 to write the script.

So apparently JJ Abrams will direct Star Wars VII and Michael Arndt (writer of Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine) will write the script.

Link.

I'm seeing the same thing a bit everywhere this morning, so it seems like a solid thing!

This means that the guy who revived the Star Trek film series will be at the helm of the first Star Wars sequel. What's next, him handling a new Stargate movie? :P

I'm reasonably hopeful about this. I think his style could work for the Star Wars series.

Far as I'm concerned, the series has few places to go but up. Pray they don't make me eat those words.

I think The Old Republic and its predecessor, kotor, show that the Star Wars universe still has a lot to offer when taken out of Lucas's hands. You might wonder what plot purpose these films can offer since most of the ep 7, 8 and 9 era has been thoroughly documented in the extended universe in the 30 years since the original trilogy, but just because something isn't necessary doesn't automatically make it bad.

And if Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher make a Leonard Nimoy-esque appearance all the better.

Considering they've said the movies will be entirely new, we can assume they're disregarding established EU canon after the movies.

I thought Metallica couldn't get any worse than Load and Reload.

I was gravely mistaken.

And they keep coming!

"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films..." That sounds like the Disney-straight-to-DVD/Blu-Ray tactic to me, but we'll see. That's a LOT of Star Wars in a short timespan!
