You're probably heard about the meteor incident in Dr. Cossack's neck of the woods (the character Doc, not the site admin Doc) in the Ural region. There's footage all over the YouTubes.

Spectacular, beautiful, and awful that so many were injured. Between this and the asteroid buzz, maybe NASA will get some extra funding from this recent press.

This is definitely a surprising event!

The Earth has several billions of people living on it, but most of it's surface is still unpopulated (oceans, deserts, mountains, etc.). To have this happening over a city area, in a place where many drivers have dash cams, sure provided some impressive footage! Luckily enough, no one got killed either.

I saw the news titled "a meteor explosion injures hundreds of people" right after waking up yesterday morning, it took me a few seconds to realize this wasn't about a new movie release!

Luckily, the second meteor didn't come down to earth. It came closer to earth, than what our satelites are.

What Nasa should do, is try to figure out where the Meteor came from, make sure there are not any more of them, or a much larger one at.

As for the people in Russia, if that meteor had hit land (not a lake) the injuries list, would have been that much greater. Count the lucky charms.

I like this quote from Armageddon: "Well, our object collison budget's a million dollars. That allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and beg'n your pardon sir, but it's a big-ass sky."

The numbers might be off, but the idea still stands: the sky is BIG, and the budgets to track it all simply aren't there. In fact, the recent asteroid that passed by us was a special case: we knew beforehand that it was coming, and when. Often, we realize some big asteroid was here after it's closest passage to Earth!

Tricky thing about space. It's DARK. It's also big. Bigger than anyone who hasn't been there can imagine, I would think. The difficulty in monitoring and tracking everything that comes close - or may come close - to Earth would just require more trained manpower and money than any nations could rightly pull together.

You've heard of the Asteroid Belt, right? There's BILLIONS of them, a lot of them HUGE. If you include the ones outside of that belt then you probably won't be sleeping tonight. :P Luckily orbits are pretty regular, easy to predict things. This other meteor (which is completely unrelated to the one in Russia, total coincidence) was predicted to come between Earth and its satellites for some time.

If you are going to be hit by a meteor you will probably know before hand. Earthquakes are another matter entirely. :)

I'd love to have a space room in an asteroid, personally.

Well, at least it was caught on tape. So the world now knows what one looks like.
