So, question. How the heck do you get that awesome map of the server? Especially the 3D mode. And, is it available to view maps on a local computer / single player game?

The map is all handled by a server mod called DynMap. It automatically generates the map in both 2D and 3D mode and makes it available for online viewing.
It needs to run on a Minecraft server, though, so it won't work in single player mode.

There was a small stand-alone program that could make maps similar to the DynaMap for single-player games. It hasn't been updated in a long while tho (the original author kinda dropped off the face of the planet)... although someone else did pick it up. I do NOT know if it's been updated for the latest version, however.
But, if you're interested in looking around, search for "Cartograph G."
One warning, maps can get pretty large, and Cartograph G can take up a lot of time/memory in rendering them. A map the size of Creeper's Lab? Might just crash it.
To put it another way? This sample?
Was originally at 6688px x 3333px. I cut it almost in half to 3600px x 1794px just to keep the file size manageable. And on the boards here it's 77px x 394px. And this is really just a small map.
Anyway, hope this all helps.
That example picture isn't part of the server map.
