Well, Bukkit took a kick to the privates today to say the least as EvilSeph and gang (TnT, etc.) are no longer going to be doing Bukkit updates/maintenance...

That said, Dinnerbone tweeted that he personally will be updating Bukkit to 1.8, so we should at least get to enjoy the additions that the next update brings. What concerns me is what happens after? At least being done "in-house" per se, we might see quicker turn-arounds as Evil made it sound like they didn't seem to be kept much in the know of changes, etc. to help them get Bukkit releases done. I just wonder what happens post 1.8, if the reigns get passed to somebody else or if Mojang slowly tries to phase it out in favor of just having folks use Realms. With the size of their player base I'm sure they wouldn't do something and most of the chatter going on about the changes is just a knee-jerk reaction seeing long-standing members of the team leaving.
Something that does concern me though is what potential impact this could have on great projects like Spigot (a CraftBukkit fork) and BungeeCord. I know Mojang's EULA hasn't really changed in several years, they've just recently decided to start waving it around. I understand their point of concern - angry parents wondering why their children had to pay $100 to play on a server for a game they already bought (dear God please don't let EA learn of this). I believe the base code is considered GPL, but what happens as Mojang continues to add hooks and other features that don't make it into the GPL codebase, essentially leaving themselves as the only one who can use them (similar to Microsoft using API calls in Office, etc. that only they know and aren't documented). Who knows, maybe Mojang will decide to acquire them too. MD_5 did note:
"Earlier today Bukkit announced they were shutting down, a decision quickly vetoed by Mojang, who have secretly owned the project for a number of years. In the face of this uncertainty we are not yet ready to make an official statement in what direction Spigot will be going, however please be assured that we are already prepared for a 1.8 release and intend to continue Spigot for many Minecraft versions to come, whatever circumstances may unfold."
Personally, I've never been a fan of Curse.com, hated them ever since they became a name in the early days of WoW. Trying to recall the specifics, but it involved their absorption/take over of another WoW-centric site that I loved. Will be curious if we are ever made privilege as to the extent of the contract between them and Mojang (who owns what, etc.). From what I understand, when Curse acquired the Bukkit team, they also gained control of the code-base which they then turned over to Mojang.
Time will tell...
Let the drama continue to roll.

Chuck Norris doesn't need garbage collection because he doesn't call .Dispose(), he calls .DropKick().
