\'Smeagol\' had nothing to do with it. The ring poisoned his mind and created another personality inside his mind. It\'s name was Gollum. Hence the arguments he has with himself. Smeagol arguing with Gollum.

Gollum knew about Sam\'s kind and helpful nature. He knew he wanted to share the burden, not for the ring, but to help Frodo. He took advantage of this so he made him believe he was after the ring and split the them apart like oil and water.

Saruman (in the books) clains that if you break white, you get many colours. The whole spectrum (which is true), but does that mean that Saruman is but a broken version of Gandalf?
