Whoops, didn\'t realize you never said he was a real person at first. My apologies. 
Himura Kenshin and the hitokiri Battousai are both creations of Nobuhiro Watsuki. He based parts of the character off of real Japanese legendary figures, but the character himself was not a real person.
Try looking up the name Kawakami Gensai. The notes for character creation in the Kenshin graphic novels depicts him as being one of the big influences on Kenshin\'s design and character.

I did a report about the meiji revolution/restoration in my world history class last semester, and then there were rumors of a person like kenshin slaying and killing. So that doesnt really surprise me at all.
