Hello everybody...

Just thought that I would start another bitter argument here in Chit-Chat.

I need your opinion for a school debate and the topic is this. Does a school have the right to open and search lockers, book bags, purses, and the like?
Many would argue that it is imperative for safety that the board of education can search such items.
Others would say that our constitution (I live in America people) gives us certain protection.

So what are your thoughts? I must know before the end of the week, and all input is thanked.

Unfortunately, not much can be done about it.

They do this to weed out druggies and people who are hiding weapons... there\'s really no such thing as student rights when schools are concerned.

The best idea is to make sure you let the school know about the meds that you are taking for whatever.

Heck, on that line of thought, don\'t bring anything electronics-related like gameboy advance because of the dork kids. (They\'ll really go out of their way to steal it or wreck it. Best to leave it at home before a dork kid ruins it or a dork teacher gets bitchy.)

In any case, it is really a no-win situation...

I don\'t usually get caught up in these kinds of arguments, but...

Whatever the teachers/faculty does is for a reason. Safety reasons, inappropriate things, that sort of stuff...

Don\'t be mad or pissed off at them- be mad or pissed off at the people that passed the damn thing in the first place. As my seocnd period teacher says- \"I really don\'t care, but it\'s my job if I don\'t enforce it. I\'m just doing my job.\"

There is a certain degree of privacy violation, but think about it for a second- rather you that or shot? Blown up perhaps because of a cell phone call that sets off a bomb? Stabbed? Your call.

Reality swirled in a wholly blue manner, revealing absolutely nothing of merit. Things flashed madly in and out of existence like some entirely other sort of phenomena. On a whim, Kurt Vonnegut imploded, taking a sizeable hunk of Massachusetts with him. However, seeing as Massachusetts wasn't entirely sure it existed, the chunk wasn't all that big.

Due to my lack of study, I\'m unaware of any constitutional right saying that you have a right to privacy, on government funded campuses.

The reason why they allow the searching of lockers is to ensure the safety of students, who are getting their education from the Government. If they didn\'t allow searches, although I\'ve never seen them happen, then people could be hiding all sorts of things in their lockers.

We don\'t exactly have a RIGHT to privacy, because a proper warrant can be created to deem the right to search and seizure. However, in schools, specifically government funded schools, that \'warrant\' is always active.

That\'s my opinion.

Besides, what could you be hiding in that locker of yours anyway? ;D

Are you not? What? You don't understand me?

I think that school officials should be allowed to check people\'s things because it\'s really a safety precaution. The least they can do is conduct searches in private (no spectators except for the person who owns the locker, bag, etc.) and not expose what they find if it\'s not illegal.

I have nothing to hide really so it\'s not a problem for me. When I was in high school, the only thing I kept in my locker was food and textbooks. I had the thing stockpiled with non-perishables in case of a war. There were like 64 juice boxes and a case or two of cereal bars plus some other stuff, I forget. I didn\'t usually have time to pack a lunch so that\'s my excuse.

Wow...you\'re paranoid.

First off, being in school is like being in North Korea, you have no rights the second you stepped into it. Students already didn\'t have rights in school. We can\'t say what we want, we can\'t wear what we want, and God knows we can\'t do what we want in school. So it doesn\'t make any sense to have an argument. Plus, why care about having our lockers being checked when they have tons of video cameras that can see what and when you put stuff in them. Eventually they\'ll see.

....juice boxes.... cereal bars... WHY? o_o War? There was no threat of war when I was in high school. That seems very very very far fetched...

I was joking.

...About the war, I\'m serious about the food. I had a lot of food in my locker that I would sometimes barter in exchange for goods and services.

I don\'t see why it\'s neccessary to keep schoolbooks, schoolwork, binders, pencils, and your school lunch, a mystery to teachers.

Only things I ever took to school that I wasn\'t supposed to, were toys. And thankfully most of my teachers were nice, and let me bring them there, as long as I didn\'t play with them during class.

So yeah, it\'s good that teachers and the like search lockers and all, in my opinion. Just don\'t bring anything valuable with you. :P

hmmm.... I didn\'t get lockers untill art school, and that\'s a long time...

Nobody checks my locker, or any others for that matter. I just keep my drawing stuff in there so there is nothing to steal...

However, considering your situation (from what I\'ve read), I don\'t think there should be any spesific rules about it. If someone is searching your locker, wach over the prosess to make sure they don\'t steal anything, if they do, report that person.

It\'s not easy knowing what you are going through, but I hardly think it is to be considerd as a violation of privacy.

I don\'t like the idea they do. I write my folktales, storys, mangas (Yes, I write mangas), and all sorts of stuff. I\'m too shy to share this stuff, even with teachers and friends. So I don\'t like anyone to look at my stuff, so I don\'t like the fact they look in lockers.

Only reason I can think of for students\' lockers to be searched is if they may contain illegal objects (drugs, guns, etc.)

Well, they do own the lockers. It\'s thier locker. We use thier lockers. Purses and stuff like that, on the other hand... is our property.(Well, not MINE) It\'s ours. But if it is for safety of the school, have at it.

I think it\'s alright to search. \"I bid them search, search well\" I don\'t keep any bad stuff in my lockers, and if other people do, it\'s there fault for being stupid. Bringing stuff like that to school is one of the reasons some people assume all teenage guys like weed and bad magazines. The worst bad magazine you might find in my lockers is a manga, and I doubt they have enough creativity to look for any nosebleed scenes in those.
And generally, all I keep in my locker is my schoolbooks anyway.

Windrider is kinda right. Didn\'t I ever tell you about my bussiness at school? I make magnas, give them to Margaret and Patrick to pass out for 5 cents. I told everyone about this once. And the manga is called Zera, an anime style comic (AKA manga, as you should know). I don\'t sell them since nobody likes me, so I give it to my friends to sell, who are popular. We add up the money after a month, and both my friends get 25%, and I get 50%, and since I made the mangas I get most of the money. I leave everything at school since I forget stuff at home.
