Democracy
Pros and Cons
In society today, the things deemed acceptable by the public are extremely limited. Naturally, regardless of something’s acceptability, people do them anyway. Ironically, it is the people themselves that deem them unacceptable and acceptable. People are natural hypocrites. However, a reason why people may act out these unacceptable things is because they are not properly educated NOT to do them.
The ultimate problem with democracy is that the public generally has no idea what they are voting for. The most likely thing to be voted for during election is the issue described and supported the public favorite. Very few people are able to turn the tide away from this conformism. However, turned the tide has been, because those few intelligent people out there who form their own opinion say otherwise. They get their message across, forcing the public to rethink their views. Naturally, the public doesn’t like thinking, so they quash protesters. Nevertheless, this proves that the general public doesn’t think very well on what they are voting for. While an individual may know what he or she is voting for, people have no idea. Essentially, the greater the numbers actually lowers the overall intelligence.
Democracy does have an upside however, as it allows the general public to have some form of control over what happens in the country. Once again however, this is only as effective as the public is intelligent. Since the general public isn’t very intelligent, this allows them to be easily manipulated by the military, which somehow has gained control of media and other such things affecting opinion. This is a horrible downside to democracy because it allows the ‘wrong’ laws to be passed, limiting freedom, and stirring corruption.
When the freedom of America is challenged, of course protesters rally to stop it. America was built on the basis of freedom, and when that freedom is oppressed, Americans eagerly take up the cause. However, it is very ironic that it is Americans themselves that actually started this oppression. All of this is hypothetical of course, but lets have an example. Let’s say that the government passes a law against speaking against homosexuals. Although this would help quash many stereotypes of homosexuals, and promote the solid indifference America was supposedly built on, it would also challenge one of the primary factors of American law. The Freedom of Speech. To the eyes of the indifferent, a protest against such a law would probably be outrageous, simply because such a protest would look very bad on paper and challenge several other laws tying into freedom. This would stir incredible amounts of confusion as well as corruption, and I’m sure that blood would be involved. However, this is not the topic at hand.
The main concern is that democracy is failing specifically because the public is too stupid to think twice about that they’re voting for. The electoral voting system is very questionable as well, as it undermines democracy itself. This will be discussed in further essays.
