I felt Shinta grab my hand. \"Hey, you hold onto me. I\'ll guide you through here, since you can\'t see...\" I nodded, not knowing whether or not I was nodding in the correct direction. We continued to walk. I felt a strange sensation...It was indescribable. We walked for quite a while, until I stopped. My eyes eyes were burning badly. Shinta noticed me flinch, and stopped walking. \"Whoa, Zero, you alright?\"

\"Yeah...I think so...Not that it matters...\" I began to walk ahead, even though I couldn\'t see. I eventually hit a wall. I rubbed my fore-crystal after it hit the wall. Weird. The wall isn\'t normal. Shinta stared at me strangly, as I placed my hands on the wall in front of me. Everyone else kept walking.

Shinta got closer in curiosity. \"What the hell are you doing, feeling the wall?\"

\"No, stupid. I\'m feeling it...\" I stroked my fingers across the wall, noticing an oddly shaped bump. I pushed against it as if I were pushing a rock. \"Odd. This wall seems....Unnatural...\" As I noticed that I couldn\'t push the bump in, I got mad. I punched the wall as hard as I could, falling backwards from recoil. My knuckles hurt so bad. Even though I can\'t see, I can feel that I\'m bleeding. The bump dissappeared into the wall. It was a button covered in dust, rust, and dirt. It hasn\'t been pushed in years, judging my the sound it made.

\"Wait, what just happened?\" Shinta examined the wall. Soon, what appeared to be sliding doors opened with a deafening screach. \"Ack!\"

I felt light cloak my body. Kinda like when you have your eyes closed, and someone opens the curtains and you feel the light covering you. In curiousity, I went forward into this secret area. Shinta ran in with me, almost afraid I was going to leave him behind. Weird...It feels like I\'ve changed the whole cavern. We soon heard a scream.

The walls surrounding the others moved. Thick sheets of metal barred the way. They were trapped.

\"What the hell? Zero, you okay? Zero?\" InfenoMan turned to see that Zero wasn\'t there. \"Shit!\"

Iris looked at InfernoMan. \"InfernoMan, what is it?\"

\"Zero! He\'s gone! And Shinta too!\"

Iris looked around. \"Oh no! What are we gonna do?\"

\"We\'re gonna blast the walls to shit!\"

Ciel immediatly turned around. \"No! Don\'t do it!\" Too late. InfernoMan had shot one blast at the walls, and a strange rumbling could be heard. \"Don\'t shoot again!\"

InfernoMan stopped to see what she was bickering about. \"What? You don\'t wanna get outta here?\"

Ciel shook her head. \"I do! But look! Those walls are supports! If we destroy them, then the whole cavern will collapse on us! Think about it!\"

Variable sat down. \"Well, looks like we wait for Zero and Shinta.\" Everyone turned to him with disgust. \"Well what else are we going to do!? We can\'t get out without the place caving in on us! We just wait until Zero and Shinta can find us.\"

I stopped. There was a computer terminal nearby. Shinta tried to access a few files, but they were protected. Soon, I heard a rumbling. No he didn\'t...Yes he did! \"You fucking idiot! What the hell made you think you could turn off security like thiiiii-\" The floor collapsed, and we fell into the chamber below. Coincidentally, this was the very chamber the others were in. \"You dumbass! Ouch, now my head AND eyes hurt!\"

Iris ran to me, inspecting me for damages from the fall. More rumbling could be heard. Now the place was collapsing! Iris screamed. \"Now what are we gonna do!?\"

I felt an odd magnetic pulse nearby. I got up, and followed the evergy waves to a wall. Variable smiled. \"Zero, that\'s it! You can\'t see, but you can still feel! Here!\" I felt Variable grab my arm, as if to rip something out. I wasn\'t to far off.

He pulled a chord out of my wrist. \"Zero, you\'re the only one we know for sure can do this, blind or not! I\'m going to plug you into this circuit board. You should be able to access a Cybernetic Network in this area. Maybe you can access files to stop this! No time to lose! Get ready!\" He plugged it in, and I felt my body hit the floor, as I was transfered.

Chapter 44
Hacking

I appeared in a strange area, but what was even stranger was that I can see now! Programs don\'t have physical eyes! Vision is all part of the program!

I examined my surroundings carefully. In the distance, I saw something that looked like a.....Helmet? \"That....Virus....That must be what is causing the malfunction...Better get rid of him fast!\" I raced over to the Virus, and it turned to look at me with pure hatred. That was quite a sight for a Mettaur. Hmm? That stance...It wants to fight? \"Hah, don\'t make me laugh!\"

It pulled out a pick and swung it at the ground. Just as observant as I am, I jumped tover the strike. Just as I began to laugh, my feet began to burn. \"Huh? SHIT!\" The floor was covered in Acid! The real world didn\'t sound much better either!

\"Variable here! Zero, what the hell are you doing in there? You turned to floor to acid!\"

I hit the button on my Comm. Unit. \"The acid is there too? Gotta kill this Virus!\" As the Met began to start another strike, I jumped and hit him, but it didn\'t feel too good...That thing was tough. As it struck, it caused the floor to vibrate. Suddenly, another one appeared. I dashed around avoiding the ShockWaves, but that wasn\'t doing me that much good. I got in the middle of the two by mistake, and both waves hit me. It stunned me for a moment, while the acid began to sink into my feet. I looked around, only to see that both of them were dead. They hit each other.

But now is not the time for screwing around, I had to alter the CyberRoomSynthesis program before everyone dies in the acid! I bolted toward the control area, as I felt the acid making it\'s mark. The control panel was odd. There were several panels on the wall that I needed to push. I saw the one for crearing the room, and pressed it. That was done.

Now to fix the wall problem. As I pressed that button, it prompted me for a password. Soon, I heard a voice through my Comm. Unit. It was Variable. \"Good job on the floor.\"

I began to reply immediatly. \"Yeah, thanks, but to free you guys, I need a password! You have any ideas?\"

Immediatly after I finished, I heard the computerized voice. \"Access Denied. Now Launching Intruder Elimination Program.\"

\"Damn! Okay, here is the plan, Zero! I\'m going to get Rubi to hack the systems. I need you to hang in there!\" The message ended.

Soon I saw a big program 10 times my size. \"Yeah, that\'s easy for YOU to say!\" Before long, that program had me cornered.....

\"Zero, here! I\'m gonna jack you in here. I\'ll breif you of your objective once your inside.\" With that, I was transfered. \"Okay, we have some whack job in hot persuit of us. I believe it is the real-world equivalent of the Intruder Elimination Program. Rubi only opened those doors for us. The beast is still around. You need to delete it.\"

I nodded, and began looking for the program.

As I walked on for what seemed like forever, I saw it. The program was large, too large. No...I realized exactly what it was doing.

Below me, is a virtualized blueprint of this place, with markers showing where we are...What\'s worse, is that the Yellow Devil was trampling all over it...All I could hear were screams.

The whole place flooded in yellow slime, washing everyone down the corridor, including me. I was still in the terminal. Only my Cyber-Form remained. No connection to the lifeless body that was swept away.

As I began to turn around, the Devil was staring me in the eyes. As I ran away, it followed. It wasn\'t long before it was right behind me. No choices left...I drew my Sabre and jumped at it, landing on, but falling through the Devil\'s arm. It was a large liquid beast with one eye. Immediatly, I fell prey to one of his attacks, as I was suffering from external damages wherever my body is now. I have very little connection left with it through infared rays.

Iris turned to see Zero\'s body on the floor. \"Oh no! Variable! Zero has lost the connection! Will he be able to come back?\"

Variable slammed his fist into the wall while cursing under his breath. \"I\'m not sure...He may be too far away from the port, now...Unless he follows the circuit this way. He may still have a chance...\"

As that was said, everyone grew quiet. Ciel looked around, and felt a tingling sensation in her leg. As she looked down, she screamed. \"Ahhhh! That stuff is alive!\" There was an eye on the floor smothered in yellow liquid.

Iris grabbed her guns as she glared at the odd work of art. Ciel immediatly jumped up and ran to Variable. \"I know what that thing is! I\'ve read records of it in the past! It\'s a Yellow Devil! It\'s virtually indestructable!\"

\"Theres no such thing as \'Indestructable\'. It has to have SOME kind of weakpoint...\" Variable glared at Rubi.

\"What? I don\'t know anything about this big banana float!\" Rubi hid behind Variable\'s head as she saw the pupil move.

Its eye began to glow...Ciel grabbed a gun and shot Iris. In suprise, Iris jumped backwards JUST avoiding the Devil\'s laser. \"It shoots lasers from its eyes!\"

Iris knew this wasn\'t gonna be easy, but she had some idea from what Zero told her a long time ago...

Hitting it just anywhere wouldn\'t harm it. We believe its the remains of some experiment left after the Cataclysm...And there may be more ancient robots still out there...Like the Mets...\"

She turned around. \"What? What for?\"

I walked forward a bit. \"Just do it...I need to test something...\" As I said this, she nodded and followed my shadow.

As we touched it, I noticed her hand went through, and touched mine, but my hand was against a solid object. \"I got it! It changes forms! You can only attack it when it is solid!\"

\"Huh? What are you saying?\"

I jumped back just in time to avoid the Devil\'s arm. \"Your hand went through, but mine didn\'t! One side of reality changes with the other! If he is solid to you, I\'m then fighting a liquid freak, while you can land successful blows on him!\"

Iris looked confused. \"I don\'t get it!\"

I motioned her to follow, as I ran to my body. \"Jack in! We can handle him here! This will make this fight two times faster!\"

She nodded, and set up the program transfer. Not too long after, I saw her materialize near me. Ciel screamed. \"We lost Iris!\"

We ignored them, as we followed the Devil. It became solid. Variable was cursing as every shot just went through it.

It swung at me, but I was too quick, and jumped onto it\'s arm. Holding on tight, it was trying to shake me off. It managed to fling me up, but I grabbed it\'s back and held on. I looked to the right, and saw a huge hole melted in the cyberworld\'s floor. \"Jesus, that\'s powerful!\"

Suddenly, I heard a click. Auto-Repair Complete. This may mean my eyes are back to normal, or maybe my body is being beaten insanely, while it attempted to repair itself.

As I looked around, the Devil was solid form again, only this time, it had Iris.

She was waving her arms around. \"Zero! Don\'t just stand there! Do something!\"

Of course, in solid for, the Devil was like a rock, so of course she was suffering. I drew my buster, and shot the Devil square in the eye. It dropped her, and changed forms. InfernoMan and Variable were pummeling the hell out of it. \"Doesn\'t this damn think have some kind of weakness?\"

Of course! It was liquid form. I attempted to grab my Elec Chip, realizing that it was in the real world. \"Iris! Jack out, and check my body for an Elec Chip! Insert it into my wrist!\" She nodded, and disappeared.

The Devil tried to grab me, forgetting that it couldn\'t. In it\'s anger, it slammed it\'s fist into the floor, as acid flew off his arm and began to burn me. My program was becoming unstable due to the exessive hits I\'ve taken. Soon, I felt my arm power up. She did it. Now was my chance. I charged at the Devil, saber in hand ready to unleash a final blow. As I did so, it vanished. I fell to my knees and wiped the sweat off my brow. \"That was tough...\"

I Jacked out to find that I could see. The Auto-Repair systems had in fact repaired my vision. I got up and rubbed my head. \"It\'s great to be real again...\"

Shinta smiled. \"See? I told you he\'d be fine! You need to stop whinning so much! Hah, this whole time, Ciel was in the corner sulking! Crazy, eh?\"

\"I WAS NOT!\" Ciel\'s face went red with fury.

Shinta laughed. \"Then what were you doing, huh?\"

Ciel was quick to find a response. \"I was checking the floor!\"

\"And like the floor is any interesting? I\'m sure you\'ve seen plenty of floors in your life!\" I laughed.

Iris casualy joined the debate. \"Ciel, men will be men, okay? Forget it. They\'re just stupid morons anyway!\"

My program was becoming unstable due to the exessive hits I\'ve taken. Soon, I felt my arm power up. She did it. Now was my chance. I charged at the Devil, saber in hand ready to unleash a final blow. As I did so, it vanished. I fell to my knees and wiped the sweat off my brow. \"That was tough...\"

I Jacked out to find that I could see. The Auto-Repair systems had in fact repaired my vision. I got up and rubbed my head. \"It\'s great to be real again...\"

Shinta smiled. \"See? I told you he\'d be fine! You need to stop whinning so much! Hah, this whole time, Ciel was in the corner sulking! Crazy, eh?\"

\"I WAS NOT!\" Ciel\'s face went red with fury.

Shinta laughed. \"Then what were you doing, huh?\"

Ciel was quick to find a response. \"I was checking the floor!\"

\"And like the floor is any interesting? I\'m sure you\'ve seen plenty of floors in your life!\" I laughed.

Shinta smiled again. \"No, Zero! This floor is special!\"

\"Zero, Shinta, I\'m warning you! Don\'t even start with me!\" Steam was practically flowing from her ears, that\'s how mad she was.

Iris casualy joined the debate. \"Ciel, men will be men, okay? Forget it. They\'re just stupid morons anyway!\"

\"Oh, and that\'s how you show your love for Zero?\" Shinta just had to start in.

I played along with it, as usual. \"Yeah, after all the times I saved you, sat by your side until you stopped crying, this is how you feel? You women are so crazy! Right now, your saying I\'m an asshole! That\'s not what you said last week!\"

InfernoMan laughed. \"Women are like parking spots. All the good ones are taken.\"

Soon after, he was holding his face in pain. \"I\'m just kidding! Don\'t have a hemorhoid!\"

All the security let up, and we began walking through the tunnel to the nearest source of light...

Heheh...

Whatever... Anyway, I\'m here to keep my promise. I\'m back to help with the story, as I promised almost a year ago, (with even more homework, mind you) so, here we go: creative juices, flow!

The dark underground cavern behind them, the team of warriors marched on down a paved country road. Houses dotted the surrounding hills, and flora mixed with fauna for a relieving peace at last.

Ciel fruitlessly tinkered with her GPS. \"No... Why isn\'t this working... piece of junk...\" She muttered.

\"Maybe we\'re in a dead zone,\" Shinta suggested. The area they were walking through was obviously populated, making the notion doubtable at best. Never the less, he said, \"Zero, try your Z-Sabre.\"

The blue-green blade materialized and began glowing dimly in the now fading daylight. Obviously, whatever was effecting the GPS wasn\'t phasing the laser blade.

\"Figured as much,\" said Zero. \"Variable doesn\'t have an internal Cyberstasis. He\'s hardly be able to move if we were in a dead zone.\"

\"Yeah. It\'s busted Ciel. Just chuck it out. We all know that if anyone could fix a mechanical trinket, it would be you!\" Variable chuckled. Everyone laughed; even Ciel managed a smile.

\"Yes,\" she said, \"I suppose you\'re right... Still, it bothers me... It was working fine a little while ago. I wonder what went wrong.\"

\"It was probably damaged when we fell into the tunnel. The internal mechanisms are jumbled. Trust me, Ailia broke stuff all the time,\" Iris, who had been quietly enjoying the view up until now, placed the final word in the matter.

In the distance the trees began to thicken and the tops of a city skyline began to materialize. Everyone was happy to finally see civilization again, and bagan daydreaming of what they would do during their well-deserved R&R.

Moments later, the buildings were sharply visible, and talk of shopping bagan to peak the excitement of Ciel and Iris, who were of course still wearing their dusty garments. Infernoman and Shinta began arguing about how many e-Crystals they would need to recharge their drained bodies, while Variable and Zero were waiting for the sunset to give birth to the fast city nightlife, with talk of dancing and lounging among pretty reploids.

The paved road merged onto a highway. The fact that they lacked a vehicle posed a rude awakening for the six friends, as pedestrians were strictly prohibited in the presence of the speeding cars and trucks. Though they would have prefered a hotel room or club lounge, sitting on the hard ground would have to suffice for now. Each of them in turn put out ideas as to how they could enter the city, taxis, buses, but as they all suspected, whatever hired wheels the city used were only withing city limits. Besides that, they didn\'t have any money, much to Shinta\'s horror.

\"No money?! No, I can\'t believe it! How could I have left my wallet?! This is LUDICROUS!!\" Shinta wailed as the others struggled to think. One problem after another seemed to chase them, keeping them one step behind the finish line.

After about a half-hour of cold night air, one idea finally sounded worth trying (Infernoman\'s brilliant imagination thought up hijacking the passing pick-up truck and stowing the others in the milk tanks in the back). Variable\'s drone elves, which enabled his flight, could only travel a short distance from his body, but that might be all they needed to deliver a message into town.

I hope you enjoyed that installment. I wish it were longer but I was cut on time. Don\'t you just love it when the setting changes in the story? Zero left me a great point to write from. Personally, I think Zero should have the characters interact more with the setting. I\'d love reading about where characters are are how they solve problems not only using their own skills, but also objects and specific inanimate aspects of the scenery. Not that I want to insult her GREATLY improved writing ability. I used to criticize her so much, but I really like reading her entries on CEC. Good to finally find time to write again, and I hope to find more.
