To Everyone: First, I should make you all aware of the fact that the term Astrolians refer to the Cat People from the planet \"Astrolia.\" *hears boos and snickers from the masses* Yeah, yeah, I know… many folks don’t care for animal people, including my family and the majority of my friends that I share my fantasy works with. Ah well, too bad for them and anyone else who doesn’t like them-- I will continue to draw things of the eye as well as from the mind (that is, whenever I am inspired to do so). :P

I will only place works from my Astrolian story here in this thread, and I will limit my submissions, for Cossack’s sake. Now, since I do draw other subjects as well, I will create threads dedicated to those items at a later date.

Here is my first submission (Overall, I think she turned out rather well, considering that I didn’t draw anything before this in nearly two years, but I definitely need to practice more on shading techniques and coloring…)

To Cossack: I\'m hoping you are able to guess the name of this particular character-- it’s pretty obvious (you can trust me on that).

The name of that character is obvious enough, don\'t worry ;D I\'ll have to read that story of yours someday.

That picture came out especially good, in my opinion. Not too many colors, but it does the job well to represent the character. Also, as you pointed in the filename, the whole picture gives a feeling of innocence. I\'ll be looking forward to the next one :D

On a side note... Where did your avatar go?

Wow... I dig catgirls (Most of the time, I call catgirls by the generalized term of nyanko-chan) I draw them a lot, but they end up looking too much like little kids...Not the desired effect, but meh... I can learn much from you, Lady K...

Not that I\'m getting ahead of myself, but I think Lady K\'s mood explains why her avatar is gone...or perhaps I\'m wrong?

I’m amazed that I got so much positive feedback for my picture of Grey Malkin (the name of the character for those who care). I’m really honored. :) As I said before, I’ll do my best NOT to place anymore character designs here on the site-- I have over 80 characters that I plan to use in my stories, each with different character designs and profiles, and I know that will take up too much space if I uploaded all of those here (See how much I care about you, Cossack? :P). Besides, I’m sure most people would rather see a completed picture, with a background/foreground and subjects that actually do something. I will definitely show more Astrolian art at a later date. ^_^

Cossack: Your right, I didn’t use much color on Grey, though it is kinda hard to give color to a cat that\'s is a Chartreux (her breed/race). Do you think I should experiment with color more? o.o As for my stories, the majority of it is still under development. However I can give you a small excerpt (it’s about a page long) as well as a story line for an episode, if you want. Though it’s not a true novel from beginning to end, at least you will have an idea of some things that will take place and become familiar with my writing style. ;)

Sol-Badguy: Don’t worry, I have a few ideas that I plan to work on. I won\'t stop my work on Astrolia anytime soon. ;)

Toki: You like the shading as it is? After I looked at it on the site, I kinda felt that I should have done more (especially in her dress, her legs, and tail). Perhaps I’m going for a bit too much realism for an anime/cartoon-like character. *shrugs*

Dr. Chaos: I’m glad to hear you like cats-- I’m sure it’s pretty obvious that I do, too. I remember how each of my cats would cheer me up during my depression by simply spending time with me. Perhaps that is the reason why I chose to write stories with cat-people instead of any other animals. ;)

Rinoman: I’ve done dog people when I was a young girl, but I stopped doing them because they didn\'t look right to me. Does that count for anything? :P

Breakman: A good number of my drawings are in sketch books, and I currently have one of those form-feed multifunctionals, where you have to “feed” a sheet of paper into the tray to make a copy or a scan (I hope that’s what they are called). I’m getting kinda tired of ripping pages out of my books (a few picture were ruined that way), so I plan to get a flatbed scanner within the next two weeks (if I’m lucky, it’ll be this weekend). That’s probably when you will see another picture. :)

Sea Monkey: I’m really glad you like it, Sea Monkey. I was debating if I should have placed her in something… more revealing to show how I’ve designed their bodies, but I felt in the case of young Grey, it was best to keep her in a simple dress (though to me, the dress doesn’t make her legs look quite right).

HJ: I actually do have characters with interesting hair: one has semi wild, spiky long brown hair with black and white highlights (I tried to make it look like a lion\'s mane), and another with a huge, wavy metallic-purple Afro (I guess that\'s the best way to describe it). Now I want to compare those two with “Chocolat” of the Eto Rangers. *must visit Google.com to seek these Eto Rangers* ^_^

Keiji: Nyanko-chan, eh? I must remember that, though I’m sure I’ll mispronounce it, heh. *writes the word down* And thank you for those kind words of yours. I appreciate them.
*begins to smile* Is it safe to assume that you think Grey looks mature, or womanly? Which if I continue to jump the gun here, I guess that means you think I look mature, or womanly, too! (At this point, I should let everyone know that I am the live model for all of my female characters. :D Sorry for putting words in your mouth, Keiji. Oh, and speaking of models, I want to ask something: Do you happen know of a place where I can find pictures of males that I could use as a model for my characters? I do have both females and males in these stories, but I tend to shy away from males because I can never get them to look right (I’m having too much trouble with designing their bodies). I originally was going to use my younger brother as my model, but he kinda let himself go. (Seriously, I really shouldn’t say that :P). I suppose I’m trying to be cheap by avoiding to purchase some expensive art books, but if I don’t find a male model soon, I guess that’s what I will have to do (I don’t want my work to suffer because if my inexperience of drawing men)…

To everyone concerned about my missing Avatar: I unset it. As Keiji mentioned, my current mood does explain the disappearance of my avatar. I’ve been in a rut for a very long while, and I just noticed this recently! So, to get my life back on track, I plan to make some changes. I think of my avatar as an extension of who I am and what I want to represent, and so I decided that it needed a change as well. If I’m not too lazy with drawing, I’ll begin to showcase more Astrolian art through my avatar. I hope no one has a problem with this (If so, I’ll use a different picture of Cyber Peacock instead of the normal sprite I\'ve been using since I\'ve been here).

Sorry for the long post-- I know, I talk too much! *phew!* :P

Experimenting in art can often lead to interesting results, but in this case, I don\'t know. You said yourself that this drawing of Grey was meant to be simple, so perhaps it\'s better to keep it that way. You can always try later on other pictures, which could have more details (like you said in your last post).

And yes, I would definitely like to get a read of your work. Feel free to send a sample my way whenever you want ^_^

Dog people count too. If you keep practicing on your drawings it\'ll improve. Try finding artist books which had step to step guides which will help you learn and develop new skills, i have a book on how to draw cats. Theres things i\'m not good at drawing at but theres other things i\'m alot better at but being able to have more skills is very useful.

Ah... so we\'re on the same boat... Though I am a guy, I find it real difficult to depict males, whether in representational form or cartoony form without using a subject... Females I can do with or without it... I guess that\'s because... well, in actuality, I don\'t know... Affinity, perhaps? I don\'t know where to find pictures of guys to use in drawing(mostly because I don\'t bother to look), but I\'ll start to do so from hereonin, to benefit us both. I\'ll keep you informed.

:D Those books on human behavior haven\'t failed me yet... The mood was very telling, but I wasn\'t sure if it applied to every aspect of your life. Sure enough, it was! I hope you are able to reevaluate yourself soon, Lady K.:)

Alright, I finally got a hold of a flatbed scanner, so I decided to submit another picture. This is a much older work than my previous submission-- circa January 2000. As you can see, I’ve been having problems with coloring and shading for quite some time, heh. I guess it’s obvious that I cannot create a decent background without using a reference. It looks so… flat and 2D-- very simplistic, IMO. I seriously need to work on that.

As I was coloring, I screwed up on the shiny area of Rocky’s hair (the adult with the dress). I wanted to make the white shiny area completely circular shaped, but I accidentally colored in an ebony lock, and I couldn’t fix it. -_-

Now that I am looking back on this picture, I just realize that I forgot to draw both sets of ears for them! UGH! Ah well, minus crappy background, this picture is still decent, I guess…

Well that you have forgotten ears made it a bit bad and it may look a bit flat but..
The expression is really good, the shiney hair is also good (although you wanted it a bit different), i really like the looks with the wind in it (hair and grass) it looks better, the air could be a bit different but it really looks great and no one can think otherwise. That\'s my opinion about it, i hope i see more of it :).
(i just could\'nt resist to make a comment about it)

*stares* Those are some real long legs...

I see that you managed to get your scanner to work. That\'s good :) My hint for the background: if you tried to draw a large field of grass behind them, you might want to try to use some darker colors for some of the grass. I believe that would help giving the picture some depth. As Sol pointed out, the wind effect is good: the hair, the grass and the blue dress all seem to flow together. Good job :)

Cool, I get to respond to comments now:

Sol: I’m glad you made a comment. If someone has something to say about my work, then I would like for them to voice their opinion, even if it’s something negative. Since I’m a perfectionist, I’m always looking to improve on anything that I do, and the best way I can think of that will help me is when people make comments. :)
It’s funny-- I was looking through a few of my character designs today, and in every single one of my drawings of these two Astrolians (Rocky and Copper), it seems that I have never drawn them with ears! I don’t’ get it-- I don\'t think it was deliberate... Well, maybe I won’t do it again since it’s been noticed…

Cossack: Gee, Cossack, I thought men liked seeing women with long, shapely legs. I suppose this means that you’re not attracted to long-legged women, eh? ;)
Anyhow, about the grassy field in the background, I did use 2 or 3 different shades of green… Were you telling me that I should use a dark color such as black or brown to help give more depth? You may be on to something there, but I have no idea how to implement the effect of 3D… Maybe I should have looked at a reference for this particular background though, even though doing so may hinder my ability to learn how to draw from memory.

Tengu: Uh… thanks for the comment, I think. Oh wait, maybe that comment was meant for Cossack. o.O

Toki: I’m glad you like it. :)

Hollow: The brand of color pencils that I use is called PrismaColor-- they’re very pricey, but they are made with less wax in order for the colors to blend better (that is, if you were mixing colors together on a picture). Though using PrismaColor help my pictures to look better, I still find it difficult to blend certain shades together, and since I’m not use to coloring pictures for a realistic effect, sometimes things don’t turn out as well as I would like them to.
About the wasp waist… I hate to hear you say that, because I’ve been doing this for such a long time that I’m a bit reluctant to change it. I did my best to develop my females to have bodies that are both strong and graceful—they were meant to have small, thin chests with long legs and shapely hips. (Unfortunately, I still haven’t found the perfect body mold for my male characters). Though I’m not sure if I would go with a change in their shape, I am curious-- do you think there is a way to change the bodies while retaining the aforementioned qualities? It seems like it would be a bit difficult to give their waistlines a bit more “flesh” because their torsos are so skinny, but if I can find a solution that would help, I might be willing to change it. :)

Oh, I didn\'t meant to say that I dislike woman with long legs, I was merely stating that those of that character were really long. :) Now that I think of it though, the two other characters have about the same length of legs. It wasn\'t as obvious because of the dress covering them. It\'s part of your drawing style, and it does come out great :D

Cossack: …so you are saying that you like women with long legs? ;D

Rino: Yes, I have seen both programs. I thought the Thunder cats were great... back in the day. The SWAT Cats were really cool, and in a way somewhat similar to what I wanted to focus on with the actual plot for my stories. I\'m not sure if you are aware or not, but there was also another cartoon that didn’t last too long-- Space Cats by Hanna Barbera (I think it came out in the early 90’s). When I saw the title of this show, I was very angry because originally, that’s what I referred to my Astrolians! I’m sure you can imagine how angry I was… :madgo: Though these programs are based on cat people, neither is similar to my actual story, which is a huge relief.
You know, my sister often tells me that I need to quickly finish my work and obtain a copyright for it. I understand what she means by that, but at times, I get too busy… :( Hopefully I’ll finish before something else shows up that’s like Astrolia.
