I just saw Donnie Darko the other day, it was by far one of the most amazing movies I\'ve ever seen. It was quite confusing, unless you complete the cryptic website (www.donniedarko.com) and read the \"Philosophy of Time Travel\" you won\'t get everything in the movie
How many people here have seen it?

(Windrider\'s gonna go crazy, I know it)

I don\'t really want to see it, myself.. It\'s one of those fad/overhyped things now.

So was The Ring.

It wasn\'t
It is accually quite good, a work of art almost.
It\'s open to many MANY interpretations, which is a huge plus.

Donnie Darko was pretty over hyped. I believe the fine trusting folks down at Hot Topic even sold T-Shirts of the movie for a while. And people bought them. Was a bit silly...

I liked the movie anyway, and like bugger above me said it actually could be considered very artistic and deep. It gets you to think a lot which most good art should do... The movie gives of a really doomed feel, and also has some pretty thought provoking ideas. It suprised me first time I saw it. If you see it on a shelf, rent it, yo. Or steal it.

Donnie Darko is an enjoyable film. While it\'s certainly a thought provoking film, I wouldn\'t read too much into the messages placed in the movie too much. The movie certainly is open to many interpretations. Unless you\'re watching the Directors Cut, which I unfortunately own. It\'s nice to know how the movie was meant to be understood, but it also takes away from the charm. Still, it\'s worth seeing.

They replaced Echo and the Bunnymen during the beginning though.

Oh yeah, I read that a while ago
It really clears things up
You really wont enjoy the movie unless you read that.

<.< Oh wow, suddenly remembered this board that UE and Wind showed me... and now I\'m gonna try and see if I can post a couple times ^^;

Anyways, actually went to rent some movies, and noticed a copy of Donnie Darko. Grabbed it. And after work, I\'m gonna try watching it... just hope I can understand it... I probably won\'t at first. Maybe I\'ll have to read Wind\'s spoiler once I finish watching the movie...

Pssssssh.

God, this sounds like Stanley Kubrick and \"Fooly Cooly\" FLCL crap.

No offense to people who like that sort of thing, but I think those types of movies and just for the folk that like to go \"I understood it, I\'m part of the clique now WOO\"

Then you add sprinklings of \"the director/creator is a GENIUS\"...and add a big dash of \"oh, the average joe can\'t possibly understand it\" and voila.

...on that note, reminds me of FF 7 as well.

Nah, anyone can understand it, it\'s horrible that they didn\'t make it clear in the movie. Anyone who said they could understand it fully after seeing it is lying their socks off. The Philosophy of time travel should of ben READ OUT LOUD in the movie...
Just one of the mistakes they made.

Is it just me, or was the audio mixed horribly in that movie?

I\'m a fan of Donnie Darko and FLCL but it\'s not because of the reason stated there. I just like this sort of genre because it actually makes you think. A videogame, piece of art, anything that would make you think after being exposed to, like those films mentioned, make me like them more. The stories are a lot deeper and more involved than a generic \'hardcore cop gone dirty on shooting spree of good while his family is hostage\' or something else ridiculously generic with action/comedy/drama/etc that flood the shelves of video stores. But that\'s just opinion.

As for Kubrick that man has like a cult following. It\'s intimidating. I didn\'t like Full Metal Jacket, but Kubrick did have one horror film that was pretty rad I remember, I think Vincent Price might have even been in it. And come on, that man is just cool.

Also you\'ve got a bit of the stereotypical spectator twang in your voice Hollow. It\'s a bit like Tim Burton fans. If you admit you like Edward Scissorhands you get lashed out at a second later and called a Goth. Sadly. It\'s annoying so be kept being put in these \'film groups\'. I just like certain bloody movies. Not accusing yourself Hollow of any of this, but still, wanted to be said. I don\'t really care about the FF7 creeps though; continue bashing them as you\'ve done frequently over the years. Bang on.

So uh.. Pssshh to you Hollow.

I have to agree with the previous two posters. Donnie Darko is not hard to understand, and no one really has anyplace to act elitist if they do understand it. Anyone can understand it if they wish to.

That said, I have ran into fans of the film whom appeared to have an elitist attitude towards others simply because it made sense to them. The problem is that the movie can make sense to anyone, provided it interested them enough to research it. Donnie Darko is thought provoking, but in the wrong ways. Films should not require the viewer to research the subject further to have the slightest idea of what is going on(the exception to this are war movies. If you\'re watching a movie based on World War II and you\'re wondering why the Americans/British/whatever are fighting the Germans, then that really isn\'t the movie\'s fault). The movie does have some messages like \"Every living creature dies alone,\" but in general, I find this isn\'t what most viewers who are interesting in the movie have on their mind. They want to understand the events of the film, because the movie clearly does not attempt to make it easy to understand. Anyone who acts elitist because they understood the movie is just a twat. The movie can be understood by everyone, but it\'s the film\'s fault if others don\'t.

Unless you watch the Directors Cut, where everything is revealed to the viewer. And if someone told me they understood the movie once after watching the Directors Cut I wouldn\'t be so hesitant to believe them. The Directors Cut shows closeups of the book \"The Philosophy of Time Travel\" at key scenes to help one understand the movie more.

Still, I like Donnie Darko. Jake Gyllenhaal was great as Donnie. I found the film entertaining. The directing was top notch as well. And the movie had 80s music in the soundtrack.

I also enjoyed how it provoked my thoughts, but this also works against the movie. An individual is not an idiot if the movie did not appeal to them enough to try to understand it by further research.

Well I did like Kubrick\'s take on a Stephen King novel..I\'m sure you know which movie I\'m talking about. But it still was confusing at points (a guy in a bear costume having sex with another guy or something, what the hell is that doing there)..and Stephen King himself has a \"what the hell is this crap\" attitude towards it.

I think that movie was saved with Jack Nicholson..haha.

And I do have a spectator outlook. I haven\'t watched an entire Kubrick film nix the previously mentioned, because I couldn\'t follow them and/or understand them. And of course fans of Kubrick do the same shit.. \"oh, you have to know about *insert barely known factoid from a 1940\'s film here* in order to understand this 10 minute section of the movie\".. And again, I\'m reminded of FF7. Backtrack to Nibelheim 400 times and you might learn slightly more about Jenova! Otherwise you\'ll learn jack about her and the game will suck ass! Oh, and if you don\'t like this game you shouldn\'t be playing videogames POSER!

And see, this is what I\'m talking about. I\'m not putting anyone down or such, it\'s just that these movies are breeding grounds for morons like that.

Hear flippin hear. Now okay, people should read Spidey comics to learn more about Spidey if they liked the movies, naturally. But if it\'s a standalone movie, it shouldn\'t be impossible to understand the events taking place. Yes things can be unanswered, but the entire movie shouldn\'t be a vague undetermined plothole in itself *cough Kubrick hack*.

Again, the movie might not be BAD in itself, I\'m not saying Donnie Darko is because I haven\'t seen it. But if it\'s a confusing mess and I\'m left scratching my head over alot of things at the end of the movie, I\'m not going to enjoy it too much. Because I\'m an american dammit and I get pissed off at things that I don\'t understand!
