What is the difference between a regular pencil and a NO.2 pencil i ask my teacher but got in trouble

I\'ve always wondered about that. I\'ve NEVER seen any pencil other than 2! Why do they even call it #2 when there\'s no other pencils? >_<

I\'m not including the artists\' pencils because they have letters with them. O.o; like HB, F, B, H...

And, well, there\'s the mechanical pencils with .5 and .7 leads... (I prefer .5 over all of the pencils!)

#2 pencils have to be used for test machines. You know, to fill out the papers with the little bubbles or whatever..really annoying? The machines can only read #2 lead for some reason.

What\'s your \'regular\' pencil really called though? There\'s HB, 3B..lots of different leads to write with, #2 is most used for writing.

You know, I really wanted to make a thread dedicated to random questions so that members could make queries and find out interesting tidbits of knowledge… but now, I’m debating if I should go along with the idea…


Anyhow, about the No. 2 pencils, they seem to be the standard for those SCANTRON machines (I think that\'s what they are called). I don’t know if this is true or not, but I remember being told once that No. 2 pencils have enough carbon within the lead so that these machines can read them properly. Now, the question of why the masses went along with using No. 2 pencils instead of No. 1 or No. 3 is beyond me.

I am positive that other types of pencils exists. I once found a No. 3 pencil, though my experience with it was for a short time frame. If one were to compare using a No. 3 and a No, 2 pencil on paper, the lead from the No. 3 seemed much lighter than that of the No. 2, and the No. 3 seemed to last longer than the No. 2 ( the lead didn\'t get used up as much and so it didn\'t need to be sharpened a lot). I liked it so much that I primarily used it for drawing. Nowadays, I kinda wish I had another one…

#2 pencils are scantron-positive. Most of the other pencils, like Hollow sayd (example: HB, #3) are drawing pencils.

Never seen a #2 pencil, only pencils like HB, 3H, 2B and all the others with letters. I think the idea of a random chat thread is a good idea i was thinking of doing it but i keep forgeting to open it.

Well, I still think it’s best to have only one topic created for random questions like this one instead of “fifty billion” running loose around the messageboard. Could any of you imagine looking through so many different topics just to find a particular \"random question\" thread? I honestly don’t think that would be fun for anyone.

Eh...one thread for random questions would get real spammy real fast in my opinion.. Might turn into that \'ask a Megaman question\' thread..and we\'ve got enough spam threads here for now. o.o

You are right, Hollow. This topic idea of mine could be a target for potential SPAM, but ideally, it’s my goal to see a topic that is more for persons who have serious queries and only serious replies would be allowed to answer those questions-- something similar to what was witnessed here on this thread. Call it my way of making people learn something outside of school. :muha:
