What is love? Baby don\'t hurt me, don\'t hurt me no more.

That song alone should explain what love is. :P Although if you want me explain what love means to me:

Love never gives up.

Love cares more for others than for self.

Love doesn\'t want what it doesn\'t have.

Love doesn\'t strut,

Doesn\'t have a swelled head,

Doesn\'t force itself on others,

Isn\'t always \"me first,\"

Doesn\'t fly off the handle,

Doesn\'t keep score of the sins of others.

That\'s what love means to me.

That\'s the one question that we might never be able to answer properly. It\'s hard to analyze something like this without having any sort of feelings!

It\'s as the Doc said, and when you ARE in love, really, you cannot even analyse it. Since you are in love. You won\'t care.

Mega X, I started singing that song too when I saw this topic title.

Anyways I believe love is a human emotion to get us to procreate, personally. Because honestly...what two people that were in love, didn\'t eventually want to get down and dirty for some baby making? I\'m sure there are some exceptions..

Of course, there are kids who supposedly fall in love, but I think that\'s all horse puckey. They\'re all crushes and stuff.

So yeah..not to put a downer on the romantics here, but I do believe the ideal of love is just there for (eventual) procreation. This is true love of course, not the love of a celebrity.. That\'s a sort of hero worship, another topic entirely.

Edit: Ohhh..why, you ask?

Love controls us, it\'s somewhat of a controlling emotion. You can be in love with someone..and as soon as that happens, rational thought is out the window. When they say \"jump\" you say \"how high?\" so to speak.

Why do we need someone to love? Well, my initial post I think explains.. But otherwise, humans are a very social animal and need things such as love to feel \"complete\" alot of the time.

Why does one have to be trustworthy? Why not? You need to be trustworthy to be a friend, even, alot of the time..so why should love be exempt?

And well, I personally don\'t believe in love at first sight. I certainly believe in lust at first sight though.

And yes, alot of us are changed when love happens..but notice how it\'s mostly for the better? Take me for example. Before I fell in love I was a wreck, mentally. I dunno if it was the love or just the help from my love at the time but..yeah, I\'m a million times better. I used to be suicidal and all the extras, but now I\'m just the happiest person on earth. ;) Actually no..we broke up and all, so.. Bad part is, if you find your true love you will constantly compare all others to them, if you do break up. And you\'ll stay loyal to them forever, pretty much.

This sucks, can someone kill me? I\'m just kidding, I don\'t mind it. I may seem like a bitter old bastard on the boards, but my love turned me into a soft jello-like substance on the inside that loves bunnies and helping people. And it does so for almost everyone that falls into its evil grasp!

So be wary, young ones. :o If you\'re under 19 I\'d say, though..you probably won\'t find true love unless you\'re older mentally. All depends.

Yeah, yeah. Never said I needed anyone, did I? Sure, it\'d be nice to have someone, but I don\'t need anybody. I\'m basically going through the thing where all of my friends have boyfriends and they\'re so obsessed with them that they ignore me. God, that sucks. And now they think that I like their stupid boyfriends and refuse to speak to me. I HATE their boyfriends. I think that they\'re stupid morons. So, you\'ve got my reasons for that post all wrong. Same with that poem I wrote. That was about my friends ditching me, too. Jeez, I need new friends... but oh well. I\'ll get over it. Give it a week.

Hahah, I gotta agree with Wind here, I\'m 15, and I\'ve never had a girl friend. Frankly, I\'ve never really cared enough to get into a relationship. I don\'t need the RAM of my brain being used up over a relationship. All my friends are like \"Are you gay or something??\", cause by now they\'ve already had several different girl friends. Yeah, I\'ll admit there is a girl at school I like, mostly cause she\'s pretty darn hot! It\'s just your body telling you to make like a bunny. Some times love really does happen, though. When my brother was a Jr. in Highschool, he met a girl who he married and is now living happily with her at the age of 30. And guess what? She\'s pregnant. You never know, that\'s why I just \"go with the flow\". I can\'t really tell you what I think love is, though. I\'ve always been a little bit older mentally than most kids, though.

I agree with you fully, Wind. Love sure is worth it, even if it ends in an awful way.

But...these days, kids seem to PREFER to be emo. There\'s never a positive thought in their minds. I think they like the attention or something, I dunno. Or they think life is so HARD because they didn\'t get a new stereo system for Christmas or something. *shrug*

The Hot Topic and Linkin Park references had me laughing quite alot..

Okay, I just want to make one thing clear, not every kid who gets spoiled becomes emo later in life. I\'m living proof. I was spoiled rotten for probably the first ten or twelve years of my life, but I didn\'t stay entirely like that. These days, I earn money mowing lawns, though, admittedly I often wish I didn\'t have to do the work. But nonetheless, I do the work. And I don\'t keep all of it for myself. I\'ve been giving money to people outside of stores everytime I see them. I feel that I should give back, considering how I\'ve been blessed with good fortune most of my life, at least in some small way.

And with that out of the way, can we please get off the topic of emo people, and return to the original point to this?

I would have to disagree that love is there for the simple act of procreation, but that would end up in another philosophical/religious debate- which there\'s been plenty enough of already. Anyway, so I\'ll just say what I, from personal experience, believe love to be. Love, above all else, is a choice. Okay, I\'m sure there\'s a lot of people (especially younger people,) saying, \"whaaat?\" Yeah, it is. You choose to love someone, or you choose not to. Real love isn\'t sexual desire. It\'s true respect. It\'s being willing to share your life- or give your life for a person. And you two that are saying that these young crushes aren\'t love- you\'re right. I had my first boyrfriend when I was sixteen, and looking back, I wasn\'t ready for it. Very few people are mature enough to make any sort of decision about a relationship when they\'re that young. I\'ve had three relationships- only one serious- before I met my fiance, and I realize that, in a way, I\'m still learning about what love really is. It\'s not so much what you get out of it, but what you give to the relationship. I am one of those crazy few who is waiting until I\'m married to have sex... But if something happened to my fiance, if he could never make love to me, that wouldn\'t stop me from marrying him and spending my life with him. Sex is certainly part of a marriage relationship, but it\'s not what it\'s based around. I guess the point I\'m trying to make is this; you don\'t just \"fall in love\" with someone, completely helpless. Dedicating yourself to one person is, as I\'ve said already, a choice, and if you don\'t make that choice to stay faithful, to respect and honor that person, then the relationship is bound for failure from the start.

Oh, by the way- I\'m waaay not emo, but I still love Linkin Park.

*Kicks Linkin Park*

Seriously.
Do it.:P

On a serious(er) note, I think that love is simply what you feel when you come to understand who somebody really is, and aren\'t frightened by it. When you think you know somebody, or want to know somebody that\'s one thing. That\'s attraction. But when the attraction turns into a sort of understanding where it\'s not just that you \"can\" accept somebody, and more that you \"do\" accept somebody that you start to understand what love is.

I think the Greeks had the right idea.
The whole \"Four Loves\" thing.

If I remember correctly, they had the following...
*Granted they called them something greekish and I don\'t remember the spelling*

-Absolute (Unconditional) Love-
You would do anything for somebody benefit, without self regard. Period.

If they called you in middle of the night, and told you they where in serious trouble, your first response would be...

\"Where are you?\"
Because you would want to help them immediately.
Not...
\"What\'s the matter?\"
Because you want to know how bad things are before you are willing to commit help at 2am.

-Maternal (Motherly-ish) Love-
The feeling that you want to support somebody, to make them safe and happy.

If you where to walk into a room, and a baby was sitting there all alone with nobody nearby and was crying, you would want to comfort it. This is a natural instinct most people have that they simply want to help, and make others around them happy and safe.

-Brotherly Love-
The way in which you feel obligated to people, for reasons that are either great or small. You want to see them happy and well, just because they are one of your own. Friends and family tend to fall into this category.

-Eros (that\'s Greek, I think for Lust)-
Basic sexual drive. It\'s not to say that there is no passion is sex. Sex without passion isn\'t really love, so much as it\'s just passing the time, but the urge to fill the physical gap is perfectly normal. Heathy, according to most, especially if there is some emotional benefactor as well.

Now, I didn\'t mean that love is ONLY for procreation..not at all. I was just saying that I do believe the feelings of \"love\" are there to \'encourage\' humans to be monogamous, while still fulfilling the need of procreation. If there were no love in the world..and I do mean true love between two people who devote themselves to each other and all that..there wouldn\'t be monogamous relationships. We\'d just have lust.

So no..love isn\'t -just- there for the procreating, it\'s much more than that, but love has its bases in said procreation in my point of view. I share your same ideals Rioni, in the \"if we couldn\'t have sex I\'d still marry\" thing, I wouldn\'t care about that either. Just, as I said, I think the bases of love..one of them leads to procreation.

Wow, am I making any sense? *hears crickets*

.. Wind, that WAS a good one. And whoa BladeMan..calm down. It\'s good that you\'re not a spoiled brat anymore, and I applaud you for it..but you have to admit that alot of spoiled children end up expecting everything given to them on a silver platter. You\'re the minority, and we know that, we\'re just generalizing as humans do. No disrespect meant.

I fail to see how love is a choice. It\'s a person\'s decision to become involved in an intimate relationship with another, but that doesn\'t mean that people choose who they love. You could try to love someone and just not feel that way about him/her. or you could try not to love someone because you know that they are bad for you, yet still love them regardless.

I agree that having an intimate relationship with another is pretty much required to be in love with a person, but just by choosing to be in an intimate relationship with another, you\'re not choosing to love them(except maybe physically. ;) ). People can\'t help why they feel the way they do. If they could nobody would ever love anyone who broke up with them or someone they broke up with because it just doesn\'t make sense to.

I was born a pretty smart guy, and at a young age I used my mental talents to *ahem* be with girls, but none of that was love. After a while I got sick and tired of the meaningless relationships and senseless drama, so I began the search for a more mature love, one based on an unknown feeling rather then the desire to get down and dirty. After a while of not finding anyone I could emotionaly hook up with I had my First crush. It was at this time I began to understand what love actually was. My crush and I would hang out, talk, and have random adventures but I never told her how I feel. I regret that alot now. but through this encounter I learned alot about myself, and the ways of love, I\'ve had several Other loves since the crush but even today I still would Do anything to fall asleep in her arms.

Sorry for the sappy story. I am a ninja at heart but under that is a lover of grand proportions... and under that is the full embodiment of evil.

I Guess my point is no-one can tell you what love is you have to try and learn it your self. Remember \"What doesn\'t kill you makes you stronger... or crippled\"
