Since a discussion about this was flaring up on the \"Which Salutation\" topic, I though I\'d create it seperate.

So what do YOU think about PC (Political Correctness)?
I think, in some cases, it\'s a load of crap. Things are what they are and the truth is the truth. You can\'t pretty it up

I think everyone loathes political correctness except for spastic rich people.

Sad thing is, PC-ness is even worse in the UK. I guess that\'s why people from there are the way they are.

Political Correctness is a load of shit. (Pardon my French) Everything now has to be corrected, to appease everyone, like how they never leave kids alone in movies and such. GAH!

Yes, for the most part, political correct-ness is a bad deal. I\'d really prefer it stay Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays. Soon it\'ll probably go from \"Have a merry Christmas!\" to \"have a celebration of your chosen event with the moderation of juviality of your choosing!\" Besides the fact that I\'m against taking Christ out of the holidays, it\'s also pretty incovenient not to have Merry Christmas. I mean, that\'s a lot of merchandising gone. Angels, who knows how many repetative Christmas carols, etc.

I\'m all for respecting people\'s opinions and choices. However, extreme political correctness to the point that you rename classic symbols are the \"Christmas tree\", that I have problems with. Who started that silly trend of trying to please everyone by annoying them all with useless details such as that? If you don\'t want to celebrate Christmas, fine. I don\'t bash you for taking part of Ramadan, or whatever else.

Well, I haven\'t been this appauled in a while. Let me start with saying this:

Being in a social minority (not racial mind you) and recive a fair share of discrimination and prejudice for my political and religious views. A large portion of my family is also Asianic/Purto Rican and part African American. I hate discrimination of all kinds.

Now I\'ll say this:

Political correctness is so you don\'t offend people. I\'m pretty sure none of you would enjoy being walked up to and have your culture, heritage, and/or beliefs spat on by a complete stranger so why do it to them? I\'ve had it happen to me on many ocassions. It isn\'t grand.

I\'ll agree with Doc that \"holiday tree\" and \"giving tree\" are a bit far but if you don\'t care what others think about what you call it, why should you care?

I'm older school than you are.

Yes Hollow, PC-ness is worse in the UK. I\'m there.

I think I heard somewhere that if a person has both black and white parents then it\'s not PC to call them \"half-caste\", but the correct term is \"mixed race\"? I think that sounds even worse.

Also, in public places, you are not allowed to display anything that shows pigs becuase it offends Muslims. A woman had a small toy pig on a keyring and was told it was offensive! How in the hell is that \"offensive\"?!

That\'s not political correctness, that\'s anti-discrimination. Anti-discrimination is the treating of everyone equally. Political correctness is often taken too far. It gets to the point where you are sacrificing your own culture so you don\'t offend minorities.

Two words: Piggy Bank.

I mean, how can a piggy bank be offensive to Muslims? It\'s not like they\'re expected to eat the damned thing!

PC-ness is the kinda thing that makes me wanna go outside and yell into a microphone: \"Have a merry CHRISTmas!!!!!\"

I remember saying something(I forgot what) about a certain situation, and my mom told me it wasn\'t politically correct to say that. You don\'t wanna know what I thought in my mind. You know their also trying to get rid of \"In God We Trust\", which has been on our money forever. Some times I don\'t understand some people...makes me wanna get a shotgun.

They SHOULD get rid of \"In God We Trust.\" Not because it\'s not politically correct... but because it\'s not true. Same thing they did with the pledge of allegiance, because it\'s supposed to be about AMERICA and AMERICA isn\'t Jeudo-Christian it\'s many religions (or non-religions).

\"Political correctness\" isn\'t so bad, because there are worse things like actual LAWS that say you can\'t hire any more white people or men or whatever-else. But, it is a load of bullshit. I don\'t care if you\'re \"offended.\" If you\'re \"offended\" you\'re proabably just an asshole anyway, because there are very few things that should actually be offensive (and no I\'m not talking about odors). I think the Satanists have it right.

And uh, Black Dranzer, that had NOTHING to do with the topic.

Just because something has been going on forever, doesn\'t mean that it should continue. I have to agree that the \"In God We Trust\" and commandments should be removed. They endorse Christianity, and that\'s all there is too it. The government should not actively support any religion, but simply allow it\'s citizens to practice whatever religion they choose.

If you really want to have some meaning full words in front of the courts, put a stone copy of the constitution out there.

I know somebody will say \"Oh, but if the Judge is Christian than he can have whatever he wants out there...\" but in reality while the judge is also allowed to practice whatever religion he wants, when he\'s sitting in that chair handing down judgements, the only thing that should sway his hand are the laws of this country, not his personal beliefs.

But by the same token, if they want to have a Christmas Tree in the white house, or even in the House of Reps, I don\'t see anything wrong with that. It\'s a freakin\' tree. Seriously, get over it. Santa puts boxes there.

I have no religion. I believe in God but have no religion. Think about it. If you want a explanation PM me.

However, despite my disbelief of religion I respect that others do have a religion and let them be. But, when stupid sayings are meant to offend people I get angry. It shouldn\'t offend but if it does, don\'t listen.

Let\'s face it, PC is all about religion and society. Nowadays we\'re too damn afraid of pissing people off.

Funny thing is, that\'s happened to me before and people wouldn\'t think of me as a \"minority\" by appearance.

Anyways, you think something as stupid as political correctness will keep all people from making fun of you? Hahaha right, just makes people angrier and come up with more creative ways to make fun of you.

Exactly!

Just like with Christmas now. Christians get angry and WANT to run around and shout \"Merry Christmas\" in defiance (noted by this thread).

I think both sides are being ridiculous. What is the problem with a church having a manger outside? What\'s wrong with someone having a Christmas tree on their property? What\'s wrong with calling the tree in Rockefeller Center, a christmas tree? Is Santa Claus considered \"religious and offensive\" now? I can understand being offended by a giant Jesus in a public place, but..I usually only see wreaths, lights, and christmas trees there. How the hell are those things offensive? Because YOU associate religion with them?

Yet also, why can\'t you just say \"Happy Holidays\" or my personal favorite \"Season\'s Greetings\"? You must realize there are many other holidays being celebrated in this country at this time. I\'m not going to go to a neighbors house, who has a menorah in their front window right now, knock on the door and say \"Merry Christmas you JEW\" because, ya know, I have respect for other people.

I think the general idea is that aren\'t thinking about the other Holidays. I know I don\'t usually think about New Years as often as I think of Christmas. And I\'ve never actually thought about Hannukah.

It doesn\'t help with all the other PC stuff hitting Christmas though, I\'m betting that after \"Holiday/Friendship/Giving Tree\" and shit like that, \"Happy Holidays\" would probably seem like another attack, just because it\'s what we\'ve been conditioned to expect.

Anyway, my main reason to want to yell \"Merry Christmas\" now is to piss off a bunch of people in the mall.

Look it all goes down to one thing all this bullcrap going in the senate about how people are being offended because they see a inflatable snow globe with Jesus in wal-wart. While these idiots are trying to abolish the term Merry Christmas and replace it with Happy holidays just because some people celebrate Chanukah.
I don\'t care if you celebrate Chanukah or any other hliday, but that doesn\'t give you the right to tell me I can\'t say Merry Christmas whatever happened to Freedom of Speech.

I respect them, but that doesn\'t mean I have to say \"Happy Holidays\" to respect every event, when really all I want to comment on is Christmas?

Put it this way, if a Hindu bumped into me in the street and, instead of saying \"Happy Diwarli\", they said \"Happy Holidays\", I would encourage them to be prod of the celebration of light. They should openly celebrate their religion, and shouldn\'t generalise their greeting to avoid the risk of offending me. It\'s stupid. And I would tell them that.

Okay, so you respect them but you can\'t change your simple phrase (merry christmas) to another two-word simple phrase out of respect?

If I\'m in a catholic church I know it\'s okay to say Merry Christmas. If I\'m with good friends, I know which holidays they celebrate so..I know what to say. But I use ol seasons greetings for everyone else, what\'s wrong with that?

You probably SHOULD say what\'s fitting however, I don\'t get offended when someone tells me \"Happy Xmas\" or anything. If you\'re not sure, just say happy holidays. I don\'t think I would get offended if someone told me to have a happy kwanza.

I don\'t expect other religions to change their greetings to avoid offending me. Why am I expected to?
